Thanks Edi - I have been waiting for the price of a 500GB external drive to drop below £100.

These prices are getting lower and lower, pity I don't need one though.

Good find for someone who does.

i have the 320gb version of that and it hasn't got an on or off button. I have to pull the plug out if i want to turn it off, or use the socket- can't be that good? I also don't think it one of those that auto turns on and off with computer,as mine doesn't appear too. Still i'm probly be wrong

If you need one with OFF button then take a look at Buffalo Drivestation SATA 500GB - 99 quid from Amazon. It does have power switch and also 'power mode' switch - auto or manual.

Thanks edi! :)

yes I have the 320gb version and am not too worried about the on/off issue as I only use it to store a complete copy of my hard drive...appreciate some may want it in constant use so would prefer another model.

Would this work with windows 98? A lot of USB HDDs now seem to state only win2000 or winXP but I need one that works with win98. Cheers.

Sorry to hijack the thread but Buffalo spec says:
OS Compatibility Windows®XP, Windows®2000, Windows®Me,
Windows®98SE

You'll need to install drivers for 98SE though.

There are quite a few sub £100 - 500GB drives and the one in OP is the cheapest I could find :)

Does anyone know of an external hard disk that can be powered from the USB alone? (i.e. no power cable to plug in).

I would like an external hard disk to be portable and having to plug in a power lead is at best inconvenient and at worst impossible (if no socket is present near the laptop using it).
#18
Yes and no. No 3.5" can be powered off USB. But there are plenty 2.5" that can do this. Note that some 2.5" may require 2 USB ports.

Best one pricewise at the moment is Western Digital 120Gb V2 Passport Drive at Amazon

Thanks for the replies. I was really hoping for something a lot bigger than 120GB. I didnt realise it was 2.5 inch drives only, though i guess it makes sense. Will look into it some more.
