I'm running McAfee on two of my PCs (Dells that bundled it) and it does slow things down a bit at times, but every anti-virus I've ever used has done that. Not sure I regret having heard of it fozey. Why such a strong opinion, and do you have any evidence to back it up?
#10

it allows fellow av companies and also the highest bidders popups and adware to get through the net so to speak.

also you try getting rid of it if you decide to change av protection!

its like the everlasting rash.

normal uninstall might seem ok, but its definetly not!

as for slowing the system, it does. the reason why is it has a very good filtering system as i mentioned in my first paragraph.:whistling:

Got to agree so much easier than other AV, Mcafee is prob my fav had no probs whatsoever. Good shout...
#16
I'm not surprised they're giving this away for free. It's generally regarded as the worst AV solution out there. NOD32, Kaspersky, Avira AntiVir.

Yep. incidentally, I just switched from NOD32 to Avira. It's pretty damn good. I'll most likely be switching back though when their new security suite is out of beta :)

I used to quite like McAfee though, was decent at it;s job and very user friendly. Requried a great deal of system resources though.

Never use ANY of the paid for anti-virus or firewalls, when time after time web user mag test have shown AVG has outperformed them all and its free, and not for 12 months for LIFE!!

http://www.download.com/3000-2239_4-10726661.html

And Zonealarm free firewall..... http://www.download.com/3000-2092-10039884.html

Be Warned ! . Any anti-virus program that is an all in one . ie .anti-virus, anti-malware, anti-spyware ,anti-this & anti-that will slow your internet surfing down . I would avoid all Security Center type programs . It's much better to use a good separate anti-virus program with a good Firewall and separate Spy/malware programs ,as is the case with Spybot & Ad-aware .
ActiveVirusShield [AOL/Kaspersky] is very good as is AVG as AV programs and I would recommend Comodo as a Firewall .
#22
Well i use this along with some diffrent programs. Cc cleaner (freeware) and Spybot (freeware) my pc is clean i mean there is squat on my pc that i dont want. I have had no issues in nearly 2 years with virus or spyware.
#23
Ive always used nod32 doesnt get in the way is non intrusive it sits in the background doing its job not slowing your pc down the only way you know its running is when the sign comes up at the start when loading programs.

Ive never had a virus with it it scans your mail and does what a antivirus should do it doesnt want input from the user is constantly updated aswell.

Mcafee is just like norton cant leave you alone for 5 minutes keeps rearing its ugly head stopping legitimate programs its just a horrible A/V i know there will be people who like it and use it but i feel sorry for them they cant know what its like to have a pc that runs fast.

Personally i wouldnt want this on any of my pc's and the new laptop i had from dell with it on i removed it staight away seems to me that they cant give it away lately. Im not going to be mean and vote it cold but i would avoid like the plague they also send you a never ending stream of spam i still recive spam from them from the antivirus i had 3 years ago and they dont seem to get the message.Did i also mention that once its installed its a royal pain to totally remove it it sticks stuff everywhere.

If you are in need of a antivirus get AVG free version it is way better and wont cost you a penny.

Good luck getting rid of it in 1yrs time after the offer finishes. AVG, no hassle - has saved me so much time and money
#26
We use Mcafee at work, and regular as clockwork it will max out my PC between 8:30 and 9:00. The sysadmin guys haven't got a clue, apparently the only thing that can do that kind of work is the full disc scan, and that is scheduled for overnight? I've seen Mcafee in use in lots of places, and while its popular, its absolutely awful. OK, maybe the problems might be configuration, but if trained guys can't get it right, what chance have we got?!

I use AVG at home, and even during the full disk scan on much larger discs, it never takes more than about 10% resources.
#27
DONT DO IT!!

As said before, AVG is a FAR better option, along with Spybot, http://www.safer-networking.org/en/mirrors/index.html C(rap)/Cleaner http://www.ccleaner.com/download and Zonealarm. http://filehippo.com/download_zonealarm_free/
I also use PrevX 2.0.

If you ever want to get rid of it will take forever and I have NEVER eradicated it completely from my system. I think only a format & re-install will do that.

You have been warned!!

I've used quite a few different security suites/programs and had more problems with McAfee than any other. It was ok for the first couple of months and at that time defended McAfee by posting a no problem statement here on HUKD. Never again.

With so many different opinions here, you'd be better off clicking the link below as.....

You can't beat an unbiased, independent review from arguably the most trusted mag, PC Pro:

All a/v software slows the system - it's doing it's job and checking files in use.

Getting rid of all A/V software is also a pain - both Norton and Macafee have a little package that you can run to remove all trace - do a google search on it.

This is a good deal seeing as it's free.
#32
McAfee is horrible. Among the problems already mentioned, one of the patches deleted Windows system files.

Use something free and decent like AVG or Avast.
#33
Having tried AVG (Free), Norton and McAfee - I'd say Kaspersky (which I'm currently using) is without a doubt the best.

It's got a great all-in-one package and the amount of CPU memory it uses is minimal compared to McAfee or NAV.

Alongside magazines like PC Advisor, Computer Shopper, PC User and PC Pro - it's in PC Worlds list of 2007's 100 Best Products.

Kaspersky all the way!!!
#34
As everyone is recommending alternative software, i'll add my opinion. CA Antivirus has always been my preferred choice, it's simple to use and takes up very little space on the computer. Ok so it's not free, but it's realistically priced and detects many entries that other software fails to find.

I agree Kaspersky is brilliant. We had Mcafee pre installed on ours for a months trial and when I did a scan with Kaspersky it found three viruses Mcafee hadn't detected.
Had no problems with Kaspersky and wouldn't use anything else now.:)

get what suits you best.

different people have difernt preferences. people have all different surfing habits, different software running, do things different etc so to compare properly just cant be done.

if you read the kaspersky thread you will see loads of people saying dont use free anti virus as you only get what you pay for etc, yet on this one people are promoting avg etc. so its all down to the individual.

at the end of the day most of it is down to common sense, ie dont open atachments, run exe's you dont know etc.

totally delete Mcafee ?

Hmmm. You might.:)
#39
Don't get this just because it sounds like you're getting free software. This is a case where the cost of the software isn't related to the quality of it. There are better products that are free.

A/V software is an important choice, it uses critical system resources, and helps defend you against viruses. Don't select the product just because it's a free download of a usual-pay product. In this case, the free products perform better than McAfee so go with one of those if you need some free A/V.
