This is the stuff we always buy, really like it

But have just bought some of the special offer stuff from Asda and it's no where near as good as it normally is :?

The texture seems all wrong, softer to cut and holds together better, normally it's a little crumbly and harder. The taste is quite mild compared to the last lot we had. Is it not matured for as long when it's on promotion, got to get it in the shops like? Or does the quality vary at different times of the year?

Just wondered like?

Bargain! It's the better of the two as well!

Is this really a strong cheddar as almost all so called strong cheddars I have tried in the past haven't been strong at all.
#15
Yes, Netto £1.69 (not for the first time at that price either!)

Probably running out now, or soon though, as it has been a BRILLIANT price, and has been that since Monday I think.

The best benefit for me apart from price is that Somerfield only sell the WHITE version where I live (Midlands) but the Netto is the RED version. Now I know it is only Anatto that is the difference, but I was brought up expecting Cheddar to be Red, like it is in Scotland! :-)

Yes, but it isn't a Farmhouse style, so not the same sort of strong like some Farmhouse types (earthier/mustier?) more strong & sharp like the Cracker Barrel Canadian type (Cheese connoisseurs will know what I mean!) as Scottish cheddar can be. I wouldn't call it a sophisticated cheese, but a good bite & as such is extra good for cooking.
I think they now do a Farmhouse-style Seriuosly Strong, but I have not had it, so can't compare

Just bought some ......Thank You :-D
#18
I dunno about the block cheese but the spread isnt strong.
#19
the seriously farmy is a horrible cheese, seems to sell well tho
#20
Seasons will alter taste slightly as cows diet will change however generally the quality depends on whether they have been messing about with the reciepe or if they have bought cheese from elsewhere.

The farmhouse has been out for years, always nasty!!!!

Probably why I have hardly ever seen it on the shelves

Somerfield currently have a decent offer (£1-99 for 370g) on Parkham Farm Vintage Farmhouse Cheddar, (England & wales only, while Scotland get the Seriously Strong at £1-99 for 400g) which is not ultra strong, but more a farmhouse style which I find a decent flavour at that low price. If you don't get on with Farmhouse style Cheddar, I suppose you might not like it though, although it is not as musty as some.

Tesco now have both Pilgrims Choice Vintage Extra Mature, 400g and Tesco Afon Cleddau Mature Cheddar, 400g for £2.00. I got some of the Afon Cleddau the other day and I thinks it's really good.

I don't know the Welsh one you mention, although it has a very promising name(!) but I DO know Pilgrims Choice, and think it isn't even fit to put in the same paragraph as Seriously Strong, and would be a poor substitute! :-(
