Cathedral City used to be okay for a cheap version of decent cheese. Recently the makers have tweaked the recipe though, upping the sodium massively (to save money?) and leaving a vaguely metallic aftertaste. Mind you, life would be boring if we all liked the same thing.

I was not aware they changed anything.... I certainly haven't noticed a change in taste.

The increase in sodium may be to compensate for a removal of artificial preservatives?

I have tried McLelland Seriously Strong Cheddar and find the title seriously misleading. Thought I must have had a bad batch the first time so I tried it a second, then eventually a third time - my conclusion is that it is certainly not a strong cheddar and is one that I would not choose to buy as I do prefer strong cheddar. This one is ok, but as it is relatively mild and not in the league of a good Canadian or other market leading brands I'll pass it by. Cheap for cheese, but not for me.

Not as strong as it once was. I used to go nuts for this cheese but, since it bacame so popular, it seems to lack the bite that it once had. Maybe it is not matured as long as it was.
Mind you, I still rate it better than Cathedral City.
