3 year warranty and HDMI output on this makes it a cracking deal!

Loads in stock in Newquay by the travelodge. Some fairly decent reviews on the net.

Specs:
1.5GHz AMD Sempron 210U, M690E chipset and ATI Radeon Xpress 1250 graphics. Other specs include 1GB RAM, 160GB HDD, Bluetooth, 1.3MP webcam, Wi-Fi (draft-N), HDMI out and a 2200mAh battery. Runs XP I believe.

Noticed that the ones in Newquay had a 6 cell battery.

Yep

the only bad thing it seems is the battery life, which, at this price you could still buy another spare and be quids in. So I think its a good deal!
#10
Seems pretty low spec even for a netbook.
HDMI? It'll not be powerful enough to play HD movies so not sure of the point of it.

Not sure it's worth £199. Would prefer the cheaper Toshiba or Lenovo deals mentioned recently.
#11
Good deal, even though its not really a 'netbook'

What are you talking about? Its more powerful than the Atom, which is what 90% of the netbooks are running

It supports HD 720p, hence the hdmi.. and upscaling into an external HD monitor it will play 1080p

I think you quoted the wrong person

Many of the Atom based laptops now have the ION graphics chip which has great onboard acceleration for 1080p. Does this ATI provide something similar?

The spec sheet of the graphics card claims "Hardware acceleration for H.264 playback"

So yes, this can output HD video over HDMI. You'll have to get the appropriate software and fiddle with the settings though, it won't do it "out of the box". It will try to use the CPU to do the work, which isn't powerful enough, you need to get it to use the graphics card's GPU instead.

This looks good.

Erm, no they don't and certainly not the cheaper end. Only a few feature nvidia's ION chipset due to the significant added cost (something nvidia's currently actively complaining about since Intel's 'deals' means it's cheaper for manufacturer's to buy an Atom CPU and Intel chipset then just the Atom alone - rather anti-competitive behaviour).

Key question here, since this appears to be a reduced price on a 'special' back from July, is whether this is nationwide or just one (or a couple) of stores. Anyone else tried to get one?
#20
I'd watch out buying this kind of kit from a supermarket. You can run into troubles with obscure models and hard to find repairs and replacements

I spent a grand several years back on a medion/gericom laptop. It was fantastic for about a year, top of the range yada yada. After a while though it started breaking down, I needed a new battery etc. Couldn't find anything for a resonable price. It went back to Gericom to repair a faulty inverter - they "fixed" it 4 times, same problem reoccured!

Not always the case but becareful when buying kit from supermarkets with "No-name brands". Can cause problems down the road.

In their defence, they (aldi) did swap the laptop when it went faulty after a week.

Thing is - seems no-one but those in Newquay has got one.

Less that 4% of netbooks have an ION chipset, and these are all WAAAAY too expensive to justify.

where are you?
#27
HDMI is just replacing the old video out options and shouldn't be taken as a sign of HD playback capabilities, great for big screen browsing and basically just todays standard AV interconnect.

Indeed, HDMI shouldn't be taken as a sign of HD playback capabilities, but the graphics card should, like I said above:

H.264 isn't necessarily HD - it's just another video codec, like DivX or Xvid. That graphics card might be able to cope with 720p, but I doubt it'll do 1080p without stuttering.
