This is a really good deal... why is it voted cold? very good specs for the price.
One of the new P-type processors,
4GB maximum possible ram
and a 9600GT graphics card which for a laptop is very good and a 16" rather than massively annoying 17incher.
#2
Nice spec. It also has a medion 3yr warranty.

Shame it doesnt have bluray tho!

Hi there i have just bought a medion akoya MD96640 from aldi on the 22nd of this month, 3 days ago. i have opened it and played around with it and i was happy, but now seeing this is there anyway i can return my laptop and exchange for the new one? not a week old yet and was wondering what the policy is on that, will they do it or because ive used it warrant it as not in a million years will they swap it. Oh lord hope someone can help... :whistling:
#4
Great specs for the price. I suppose the only thing would be having to return the laptop to Medion if something went wrong. I prefer onsite warrantys that Dell give you.
#5
few questions;

does it have issues with overheating?

how is medion as a brand? its easy for a company to put a good gfx card and some nice ram together, but cheap out on everything else making it inefficient

how does this compare to a dell xps of similar quality? currently looking for a good deal on an xps 1530 (http://www.hotukdeals.com/item/259517/dell-xps-m1530-notebook-t9300-2-5gh/ for example)

will i be able to tether my 1st gen iphone in order to get internet access anywhere?
#6
A very good price for the specs. No overheating as the TDP of the processor is only 25 W the lowest for laptop CPU.

I have started a similar thread, that is gone now, so I would like to give the OP some heat.

Cheers.
#7
Voted hot looks great for spec, interesting resolution though, 1366 × 768
#8
you should be able to return the item, I;m sure there's a 14 day cooling off with all new products, ring and ask them.I bought a tv last week and within the week it was reduced a further £55 , I phoned them and threatened to return the item as I know under trading standards I am allowed, they gave me the £55 difference instead.
#9
Have no idea why this is cold! Spec for spec this is a pretty sweet deal!
#10
How hard (if at all possible) would it be to replace the dvd drive with a blu-ray drive??

Cos £ for £ this looks to be an amazing deal, the 9600M graphics card I am guessing is a vast improvement over the 8600M you get in the Dell laptops in and around this price range??
banned#11
Hi guys,

just wondering how this compares with the 4GB Ram HP laptop posted on here for £399 (i think), recently?

Is it worth all the extra cash?
#12
This is a seriously mint spec for the money.

As has been said, the screen resolution is a bit odd, but the rest is pretty damned sweet. The killer is the 9600M, which blows away the 8600GT in the Dell XPS 1530 (and the Ati 3650 in the Studio 1735). Add it to the Centrino 2 base, 4GB RAM, 320GB HDD and it's a winner.
#13
I'm gonna pick one up on Thursday, thanks.

Added heat.
#14
the review isn't very detailed - anyone know what the battery is like?

How good is the medion brand compared to say Toshiba? How good quality are the parts??
#17
As far as I am aware, Medion is a rebadge, not a brand in itself. For example, their netbook is (I think) an MSI Wind. This will likely be similar, probably made by the same OEM that manufactures Acer, Dell, and Apple.
#18
Nice spec for the price but it's a shame it's such a low resolution on the screen.
#19
great find...................... :)
#20
Does this have tv out on it as thats what i was going to buy a new laptop for?

thanks
#21
It has HDMI and VGA out.
#22
Does that mean you can plug it straight to the telly and watch films like that
#23
If the TV has an HDMI or VGA socket then yes.
#24
cracking deal - comparable laptops from dell ~ £679 so voted hot!
#25
I am looking for a desktop replacement laptop like this and was going to go for a dell studio 17 for about £600
What are peoples opinions on which to go for? Not too bothered about slight differences in spec but lfor reliability \ build quality \ battery life \ warrenty issues.
#26
...from the sounds of things ("not all RAM will be available"), they're shipping a 4GB RAM laptop with a 32-bit OS. Slap on Medion's wrists for losing 768MB (!!) of usable RAM because of this. It's also why most major OEMs now have the incredibly bizarre 3GB RAM in their laptops/desktops (often in horrible configs like 2*1GB+2*512MB) to work around the 32-bit limit.

Why can't they ship machines with a 64-bit OS?! I use 64-bit Vista without a single problem on my Dell desktop (yes, I hounded Dell UK until they eventually gave me a 64-bit Vista Business install DVD for free), so it's not for compatibility problems from what I can see.

Medion Laptops are rebadged. Most Laptops are rebadged - theres 2x big laptop manufacturers in China. NEC, Asus, MSI, Tiny, Time, Patriot, Clevo, Mesh, Advent, etc. Lots of companies that have come & gone all use the laptops from one of these manufacturers. Even HP outsource a lot to them, as well as other manufacturers.
Mitac are one of the bulk manufacturers, the other escapes me at the moment.

the wasted ram is interesting & I am wondering if the Video Memory shares the main memory.
Also the screen resolution could be because the HDMI output - or maybe a printing error.
Most of these new cheap laptops coming out have low resolution.

256mb on the card is dedicated. You'll get over 3.5gb of your RAM so I wouldn't worry too much.
#29
It has a 5 star review in this weeks Computeractive - the only downsides are a "poor mouse trackpad" and " it will struggle with recent games if you turn up all the quality levels".
#30
Good spec for the money.

The resolution isn't so different from 1280x800, a bit better for movies and not as good for work. The video card is a GS instead of a GT, but that should be plenty for most of us.

And a 3yr warranty if needed.
#32
best around at under £600...got the aldi email meself too...well done 4 posting here op...heat added...top deal..wish had £600 lying spare...but just bought a netbook ( asus eepc 1000h ) as well as already having a desktop and laptop so can't be too greedy can i

It comes with Vista Home premium 64 bit so all 4 Gb RAM will be employed

will i be able to get a car charger?

Had a look on PC Advisor & there it states :

The Akoya P6612 also features Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 2.0 connectivity, an integrated webcam and microphone, a biometric fingerprint reader, three USB and one eSATA port, plus a four-in-one card reader.

So if that's accurate you're correct

EDIT : Just searched a few more review sites & they all say webcam, frequently along with the words excellent deal - I take it this is a very good laptop :w00t:

From the PC Advisor review:

"matte anti-glare 16in widescreen display"

I assume matte means the 'older' type displays, i.e. not glossy like many of the new laptops have ?

From computer active :

The screen is sharp and clear, and being a matt model rather than gloss, it doesn't suffer too much from reflections in bright light.

All of the reviews for it are outstanding though
