Any idea what OS this will come with?
#2
Where are you seeing the spec's for that pc? All I can see fromn the website is that its coming on the 13th.
#3
Only guessing but I should imagine it'll be Vista. Don't most new pc's now?
#4
ComputerActive Subscriber which means I get the magazine on a monday and it isn't normally out until thursday, which is the day the deal starts.Aldi advert on page 33...no mention of OS, suspect Vista premium

Not a bad deal I suppose - good find!

I know it's been said before but I had 2 Medion PC's a few years back (Pent 4 1.6 & 2.8!) and never had any problems with either. So unless the quality has gone backwards... I would have no worries about buying this, in fact, I'm just gonna start work on SWMBO! lol
#11
agree about the warranty, Medion's service is terrible. However, you can return to Aldi for a refund if it breaks down within the first 12 months, so call it a one-year guarantee.

Not sure what to say, s'pose thanks?

I have had 3 Medion computers and only changed to upgrade. I think they offer real value. The one I currently have is whisper quiet and given no probs for last 2 years. It has also been operating nearly 24 hrs a day.

Check the spec and work the cost to build.

- It is clearly NOT a computer for gaming people (poor graphic card and ( I can bet ) PSU too - so add at least £120-180 if you want to play newer games) + obviously monitor.I am not surprised with the graphic, everyone wants to get rid of this geforce.Newer 8800gt,gs,9600gt,ATI3850,3870 are much, much better than the 8600gt.

- it's not computer to the office or for kids (£500 + monitor + medion warranty = disaster)

- I suppose, the integrated sound card wil not make the computer attractive for audiophiles ;)

Sorry, but it's cold to me....very cold.Do not buy it.

Aldi don't offer a 12month return policy any more only 30 days return.
The 3 year onsite warranty is only valid if you have the receipt.
Some people have had problems with Medion's support, other have found it very good.

Great site for Medion Advice and support - http://www.medionsupport.com

Its not on-site anymore, read the bottom of the leaflet, its collect and return for repairs.

(it takes good eyesight lol)

I have purchased 3 medion pcs over the years from aldi.
The last one needed me to use the on-site warranty.
The on-site warranty is excellent, just ring the aldi / medion number they pass on your details to a local company who contact you direct to arrange to fix your pc. Turn around is very quick.
After mine was repaired on-site (motherboard and power supply replaced) medion extended my warranty by 3 months .
I have also found over the last 4-5 years of owning and using a medion pc that the helpline is excellent and pcs are very good.

And as i said, this Model has NO On-Site Warranty.

And do you work for them?

Excellent isnt a word i would use for their "Helpline".
They were badly trained and so incompetent that every time i called i immediately asked for a transfer through to tech support, this dept being the only one that could send Engineers out anyway.
Their General Helpline staff were a stop-gap so you were on the phone for longer while they made more money from the call.

Their Engineers would call you in 3 days to arrange an appointment, often the next week.
If that day was unsuitable or they didnt turn up, it was another week hoping they did.
And so on.

They phased out Engineer Call outs, just after my model ran out of Warranty.
Not surprising as my model had so many built in faults it was ridiculous, it would have been cheaper to refund everyone than send out all the engineers.

I agree a 8800gt would be better, but combining the q6600 power with the 8600gt 256 will be reasonable and will be able to play crysis on medium settings on a 17inch monitor.

See my earlier post on the philips Quad core for sale. 1Gb ram less, but you get a 20" widescreen monitor.

Did you ring medion???
Can't believe they said that.
I never had any problems with the service. Used it 3 times in total.
1st time had an engineer out in 3 days.
2nd time 4 days (due to engineer not finding my hard to find farm within 2 days)
3rd time a courier turned up the same day to send my pc back to Germany and the same courier returned 4 days later with a fully repaired pc.
I must be lucky.

All i can say is use the number on the warranty card. If you ring aldi or speak to the store you will be fobbed off etc...
You must speak to the repair line/warranty line or you will only get a call centre employee reading off a q-card.
Hope this helps.
#24
Sorry didn't realise they was no on-site.
For existing medion pc owners only use the on-site number not the medion/aldi number to get the excellent service and not the q-card reading service.

No i don't work for them.
Just took a gamble on a medion pc 5 years ago from aldi and got the best value pc.
Paid £799(tower only) would have cost me £1400 for same spec. pc from dell etc...
The only thing i have noticed is the over the years is the value is going down with every new pc from aldi.
Last medion i bought was from toys-r-us (aldi price £399 toys-r-us price £279 - the quidco.

Nah it was always Medion themselves i talked to.
Their staff werent trained in anything about PC's, and so couldnt answer or respond to any queries.

I called up once as the fan on my Graphics card burned off, (a very common occurance on my model, various stories on various sites) and was abruptly told, "not that doesnt happen, you must have done something".
Emmm no, put me through to Tech Support right now and stop talking tripe (not my exact words btw)

RepairLine, the company that carried out the repairs, only had 1 engineer in either Scotland or the West of Scotland, and i called at the start of his summer Holiday so he was off, and i was waiting for 2 weeks while he was away. Not a word of a lie, the Repairline receptionist confirmed it.
Bad enough but he didnt even bring the right parts and so was another 2 weeks before he could squeeze me back in.
And due to the amount of times i needed that model fixed, i got to know he had a lot of weeks off sick etc as well.

Having no on-site support from Medion is a god-send probably, but then i have heard a few stories about the hassle with the collect and repair centre though thankfully i never let them take it anywhere.

The engineers didn't turn up twice for me, both times someone had to get time off work to be in. Then they said well its tough you keep taking time off and eventually someone will turn up, or get the parts delivered and do it yourself. I went for the parts sent to me. Only took them two weeks as they kept taking them to the wrong address(5 miles away). Despite having the correct address on the parcel.
I'd never touch another medion.

I couldnt get the parts because "Oh well we cant get them back off of Repairline, so you have to just wait"

Only good things hte forum i get to wind ppl up in ;-)

Got to say i have had Medion before and will buy again. Only had one problem with it and that was the GFX card. Engineer was out NEXT DAY!

Only point, on the German website it says this model has 2GB and not 3....

Ha ha. You can say that again HaggisHunter :).

I have had the odd problem with my Medions, but eventually they've sorted them out.
And where else can you get a 3 year warranty included in the price ?
As they say," You pays your money and takes your choice ...."

I'm sitting with the PC - MD8830 - in an unopened box that they were selling from 14th Feb not now knowing whether to return it and get the MD8833 for another £100. Is it worth forking out the extra £100?
Anyway blurb in Aldi brochure for MD8830 quotes:
"3 year mfrs warranty
Medion offer a telephone support
hotline charged at National Rates and
a FREE call out service for on-site repairs"

so if your quote is correct they have changed the terms very recently. What leaflet are you quoting from?

BTW I have had current Medion since Nov 2002. Only 2 problems so far were onboard sound card went after about 3 years - sorted with a plugin USB soundcard from Maplin for £30 - and the PSU went a few weeks ago which cost me £70 to get repaired. New one is really noisy so decided to get a new PC.
Have always found Medion customer support to be really efficient & helpful even wehn PC was well out of 12m warranty.

http://www.medionsupport.com/forum_images/MD8833.jpg

The grey box at the bottom, middle of the third line.

"36 Months Manufacturers Warranty. Medion also offers a telephone support line charged at National Rates and a return-to-manufacturer service for repair"

Picture is a bit rubbish, and i stole it from the Support site (unofficial) so its a bit blocky but you can read it.....just.

See, the 2 Medions i've had in my lifetime, the first never broke ever.
But really, about 3or4 years ago they started going for the higher spec models and didnt have the foggiest what they were doing. Which was when all the problems started, i think when the MD8383 came out, imo the best value PC they ever made, but also, the worst built. I mean the PC was £700 with a CPU going for 350/400 retail by itself with PCI-Express which wasnt mainstream yet.
They were used to building low-price, low-spec PC's and tbh knew nothing of the build quality needed for higher spec parts or heat management to keep the pc from cooking itself.
They ended up with 3yrs of constant repairs just on that model, and during that time, they never bothered to improve customer services or the engineers.
My old PC i had before the disaster one went to my dad, then to my sister, and she leaves it on 24hrs a day.
imo thats proof you cant compare their old build quality to their more recent.

Oh and the 3yr Warranty isnt included in the price, its tacked onto the price.
Your paying a large premium for the Warranty, so you arent any better off really than buying somewhere else where its an option, but probably works out at the same price anway.
Difference is, if its an option, they are likely to have a call-out/next day call-out service to make the service seem worth paying the extra for.

The Medion is like "Oooh look we give you a Warranty" but its kinda rubbish and of a far cheaper value than any other manufacturers warranties.
Little to no email support (i actually got a reply once, that i had forgot about, 6 months later)
Small call centre, so long queues and big phone bills.
No engineers, courier hassle, travel time, parts sourcing time (German Co. so lots need shipped from there), repair time, travel back time, couriers playing football with it and breaking it time, etc etc.

Surprise....surprise, HH having a go at Medion Computers yet again...

Simple cure, don't buy, I am very happy with both of my Medion Computers, one is about 9 years old now, never missed a beat, the other one is nearly 3 years old, just the same, never any problems.

Fantastic value for money.

For all the posters who vote this cold.... can you please say where there is a better deal elsewhere? Everyone says "dell" but does the dell have a BluRay & HD player, with a Satalite + DVB TV tuner?
#33
Does anyone know which version of Windows this comes with? Can't see it on the above pic!

Lists all the other software, just no O/S!

this has bluray, HD and satelite?

Can anyone else confirm?
#36
If you look in the Specs it says DVB-S = Satalite
#37
Not blu ray or HD DVD, says Hi Def Sound, and terrestrial and Satelite TV
#38

yes, but you said bluray and HD DVD which would make this a much better deal.

DVB-S is worth £30.

DVB-S is not very good.

Bluray would cost £150.

BIG DIFFERENCE.

Have read lots of negative comment re Medion in this thread but has no one taken Aldi to court if things are as bad as they say. If mine goes kaput & I have any probs getting it sorted I'll be off to the local County Court to issue a summons pronto!
