Haven't decided whether I should get this or not. Any comments on this deal and Medion Erazer products in general?

Comments might be useful from last time it was posted in Nov 2016:https://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/medion-erazer-x7847-173-inch-ci5-8gb-1tb-128gb-ssd-gtx-1060-6gb-85499-argos-with-code-laptop10-2550935

so Medion Erazer products arent too good then?

Full spec from Medion's own website...

http://www.medion.com/gb/shop/laptops-medion-erazer-x7847-17-3-high-performance-gaming-laptop-30022557a1.html

Note that it's on for £1,149 there so this Argos deal is £250 cheaper.

The screen is TN, not IPS, but a good one according to some of the folks who bought this laptop last time it was on HUKD. The plus point is it's a full 6GB 1060 GPU, not the common or garden 3GB version you see on other laptops.

You can't upgrade the CPU in a laptop. This CPU is clocked at just 2.3ghz, which may in fact lead to the CPU becoming the bottleneck.

Never ceases to amaze me how ignorant people are.

This. False economies in laptops can bite you in the bum. This CPU already ranks (slightly) lower than my 4 year old desktop CPU. Pairing such a card with that CPU feels like a bit of a mismatch

The max turbo boost speed is 3.2:
https://ark.intel.com/products/88959/Intel-Core-i5-6300HQ-Processor-6M-Cache-up-to-3_20-GHz

You can replace the CPU in some laptops that use 35w or higher TDP chips as they tend to be available in socketed versions as well as BGA for soldering. The 15w and under are BGA only.

Now that was a deal.

CPU here is fine. It will run any modern game in high settings. GPU is far more important for like 90-95% of games. GTX1060 should be up to the task of almost all titles at 1080p high settings.

this.

a quad core skylake boosting to 3.2ghz will not bottleneck a 1060. if it was a 1080ti, then maybe, but this is a perfectly suitable pairing

I was tempted by the recent £599 Omen 1050 deal but in the end decided against it. Whilst the 1050 GPU was way better than the Nvidia 850m on my current laptop, I didn't feel like it was a big enough leap to justify a £599 spend. This on the other hand is a big leap forward and £899 for any 1060 laptop is a very good price. I might pop into Argos and ask if I can look at one first. In the past 17" laptops always seemed 'too big' but I'm open to persuasion.
BTW, just to avoid unnecessary comments, I'm absolutely not interested in a desktop (too big) or an i7 (not necessary for the games I run). I've been gaming on laptops since 2007 and know what I'm looking for thank you.

I purchased a high end gaming laptop last year. It doesn't compare to a tower pc of the same spec though. Gets hot and noisy with the fans when you push it too hard and it will barely run an oculus rift that a supposedly lower spec graphics card in my pc runs fine.

I bought the X7843 on deal not so long ago. That was an i7 with an IPS screen, but only came with GTX980M. The deals never seem to have all the good bits in at once!

Can't say enough about the laptop though, make sure you activate windows and login with your Microsoft account before clean installing windows.

Says IPS screen on the medion website, so this is perfect. It's either this or a Alienware 13 1060 which I'm waiting for one to come in stock in the factory outlet. Hmmm?

The outlet offer some good deals. Is the performance okay? And the aesthetic?

I'd say the build quality will be better on the Alienware and higher resell value but a 17 screen on this is tempting for that price.

Laptop CPUs aren't my forté, I'll give you that! Only really interested in desktop ones, where there's none of this throttling nonsense to save battery life.
#22
I'm not a fan of 17" laptops, way too big for my liking. The CPU is last gen, you'll fill up the SSD pretty quickly and some people will want to upgrade the RAM. If this had a 1050 in it, no one would look twice at it. However with the 1060 and full 6GB you're going to be really future proofing your gaming needs. You wont get a better graphics card for the price though!

One thing to note, the specs linked to the Median website in the comments above might not be exactly the same as the Argos model. There's no mention of USB-C on the Argos website so they might have some old stock that may differ slightly. That's only my speculation though :)

Ive seen the x7848. The one with 1070 and i7 going for 900£ on gumtree. Idk if they dodgy or w/e but risk reward blah blah
#24
I got mine for £750 last year (good old topcashback), it will happily play GTA V but I needed to replace the virus checker with AVG (or actually, any decent one)

How does this one compares to the new Predator Helios 300?

i7 would be overkill for gaming anyways this is perfect - its only a 1060 anyways, battery life on these wouldnt be great to begin with imagine the extra heat also.

Tech deals in HotUKDeals somewhat reminds me of PLAYERUNKNOWNBATTLEGROUNDS.

EDIT: WOOPS! Had to check my spelling before posting. Didn't want to lose a limb! X_X

It's probably 3.2ghz on 1 core and 2.9 or 2.8 for 4 cores

It definitely does
Many tests have shown that the 6300hq/7300hq bottleneck the 1060 much moreso than the 6700hq/7700hq

Alienware build quality is absolutely unreal, mine feels so sturdy.

Very Expensive

Can this stream 4k Netflix to my TV?

Only 1080p screen though :/

For the price it aint bad but I would rather pay the same money for a 15.6 with a better resolution

'many tests have shown XXXX bottleneck the 1060...'

you won't have any issue linking a few then?

at 1080p (non-vr) i dont believe this CPU will bottleneck the 1060 in any meaningful way.

Totally depends on the game. ARMA 3 would get hamstrung by that CPU, as would Forza Horizon 3.

1080p would be fine for on the move, but yeah, 17" is a bit big for portable, bit small for a desktop replacement

I don't believe the CPU will bottleneck the 1060 in this instance. 1080p gaming really isn't difficult to run, so unless you're livestreaming or have something pounding the CPU then you won't have any bottlenecks in games. Is the monitor 60Hz? If so, turn on V-Sync and it won't tear etc.

Arma 3 recommends an i5-4460 which this 6300HQ is there or there abouts on par with and although FH3 recommends an i7, this is an outlier and just because the CPU might struggle with 1 game that doesn't mean it's a bottleneck for everything else. very few games are so CPU dependent that a quad core i5 will struggle and at the end of the day, this isn't the most power laptop ever - it's pretty well balanced.

using alienware 13 at moment and I couldn't recommend it more! I have the fully spec'd one with oled and 1060 6gb, if you have the money for it I would go for it but a tip for you. once you see that on outlet, don't bother with cashback and all that. Talk to dell customer services and ask for discount on it and they will drop a good 10-20% off. I got 250 quid off mine just by being a bit cheeky on the chat. Got nothing to lose.

I have been waiting for a 17 inch OLED laptop sigh. Happy with my current laptop now but hopefully OLED laptops would be more common in 2018 or sooner.
