Aldi have a Medion media streamer from sunday 24th. No details on website yet but it is in their flyer. I've only seen image of flyer (will be posting) but apparently has HDMI, 2 USB, Card Reader and plays a wheen* of file types including h.264 codec and mkv files, and network compatible!

My mum is the one who let me know about this, 3 days AFTER orderering the £100 WD TV live player, anyone got more info on this player?

Edit: Link to aldi page

*Wheen - Scottish for 'loads'

I'd be put off buy that bright triangle on the front unless you can turn it off, what's wrong with a standard led.

Can you put a hard disk inside?
#11
from the size of it I would have to say no, as I have both the Istar HD and the Egreat which are almost identical in size, I knwo you cannot put a drive in them, unless oyu use an external attachment...I will definitely buy one anyway and deicde when ive used it wether or not to take it back

What will this do?
#14
These streamers never seem to be perfect out the box and seem to rely on being improved with firmware updates etc. Players like Sumvision, AC Ryan, Western Digital etc. have all been improved. I wonder if there would be any support to update this. It is also a comparable price to them so unless it had something significantly better I'd go with the other brands.

Put some tape on it.
#16
I'd be interested in the interface and then what's running it to know if it is ever capable of a slick GUI

Plenty of Media Tanks out there these days at good prices but the GUIs are lacking.
#17
Can you customise the GUI then...?

No, but depending on the chipset you could maybe use a different firmware from one of the many other realtek-based players out there

Can this actually do anything than I am doing now with a lead straight from my laptop? Sorry to sound stupid.

yes it can probably consume 50watts less, and looks better under your tv, and has remote, but apart from that no.

Spot on, plus not all laptops have HDMI ports.

A lot...
#25
Cheap, but no DTS passthrough! Thats enough to put me off as unless you have a seperate amp you wont get sound for DTS encoded films.
#26
nice but no DTS pass-thru, other realtek based players like Asus O!Play, Xtreamer can do this.
#27
So if I have a DLNA media server on my network, can I use this to stream media from it?

Thanks

Why is it that almost all these media players (apart from WDTVL and PCH) do not downmix DTS? If you want one of these, then you'd more than likely be playing mkvs encoded with DTS .. and these people are probably likely to want to spend as little money as possible .. so why do they have to fork out extra for a dts decoder?

It's a comprimise because royalties are payable on DTS licenced equipment

It's a bit less than a rake.
#31
The newer version of the "normal" WDTV downmixes DTS.

Could be interpreted as 'a couple' or 'a bunch' depending on the context.

Basically, 'an unspecified number of things'.
#34
major let down not having the dts downmix pass through :x as mentioned these hd media players can be buggy and require good support but medion aint the best
#35
finally some use for my panasonic badge i pulled of an old tele. gonna stick over the medion , use it wid ma g10.
#36
yep absolutely ...uf you want to stream bluray with DTS audio forget this model
and opt for the WD MEDIA PLAYER LIVE.. i own one and it's probably one of the best products i've ever bought...( and no i don't work for the company ! ) :)

It looks the same size if not bigger than an Xtreamer and that is capable of having an internal drive

A common mistake there are plenty of media players out there these days but a Media Tank is just a few players running Syabas middleware. Of course if a media player is a Media Tank then the UI is rubbish but that will all change in March when Syabas release updates and introduce navigation based around Flash.

The aldi player uses the realtek SDK so you can expect a fast boot up and fast menu navigation.

The player is cheap but will do what most people want but there are so many reports of poor picture qualiity that i wouldnt bother, it just depends how fussy you are.

Another thing to be aware of is the realtek SDK currently cant handle all the HD audio formats you may want...

Personally i would wait for reviews of the Popcorn Hour A200:

And also look at the Mede8er (realtek based)
http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&rlz=1T4GZAZ_enGB356GB356&q=mede8er&meta=cr%3DcountryUK%7CcountryGB&aq=f&oq=

and the Playon HD Mini (if an internal hard drive isnt important) this will soon have YAMJ support.

remember Xtreamer can only 2.5" hard drives, of course not an issue most people stream from a PC or NAS.
