Will Struggle with only 1GB Ram

Will Struggle with only 1GB Ram

Will it boll*cks struggle with 1Gb RAM! 1Gb is absolutely sufficient for anything this laptop was designed to do. <1% of people will need more than 1Gb.

Good price but never heard of the company.
#6
Sell the license for vista - and install Ubuntu - it will run far better on even half a gig.

Medion have been selling through Aldi for several years.

It will struggle with those specs, expect long startup times and slightly sluggish application launching on vista.

It should be OK and you can always add ram anyway.

They also sell them with just 512mb - that would be trickier I agree.

Not bad for a basic laptop - good for students perhaps.
#11
Great price for a budget laptop.
Stick in an extra 1GB (£12-13 normally) and it will perform a lot better.

Did you ever run Vista on this machine?? I have tried many computer with different configurations and found that 1GB RAM IS NOT ENOUGH for Vista. Also, the offer does not say which graphics chip is used. If it's not X3100 or equivalent, the laptop will be even slower. Price is very good if you can use XP (and can get the drivers, which may be a problem with Medion, but I haven't checked). BTW, Medion CS is terrible.

I disagree. Of course with a faster, better processor and double the RAM it would load/run applications faster but at this spec the difference is negligable. I think 'struggle' is a bit strong!

Try using Vista with 1GB of RAM without pulling your hair out.

Calculator may run OK with 1GB on Vista, but try using something as complex as Minesweeper or even Spider Solitaire and you'll regret it.

Medion CS is terrible.

I would have to disagree with that.
A monitor hat I had bought died after 6 months. By this point, I had already sold it to a mate and lost the receipt. When he called up customer services, they asked roughly when it was bought and from where. They then arranged for a new monitor next day, old one collected and an apology for the hassle.

The replacement monitor was better than the original, and turned up next day as promised.

lmao:) I agree to a degree, but if you uninstall the usual pre-installed rubbish and adjust Vista to best performance, it should run fine.

Oh yeah voted hot!

Just bought 2 for christmas available is a baby pink colour too.
#18
I've used Vista on a 1gb 1.8ghz x2 laptop, and it's plenty fast enough for web browsing and basic office stuff. For reference, my own PC is a quadcore 3.6ghz, so I'm pretty demanding.

Startup times are irrelevant, just use hibernate and it's <10 seconds.
#19
i wouldn't recommend this laptop - other deals from good brands come along although will prob have to pay a bit more.

Medion =Worst company ever.

Had a laptop of these guys before, build quality = terrible, sent back 3 months later recieve laptop witha new motherboard.

3 months, terrible customer service, apparently sacked an employee as they told me wrong information but didnt think of telling me that the information i had been told was wrong.

If u want acheap deal then risk it but my personal opinnion, avoid medion at all costs!

You can't sell an OEM licence. An OEM licence for a Medion laptop will only work on a Medion laptop.
#24
looks like a good deal
#25
Good deal for home use, as stated earler 1gb is OK for home use vista, uninstall unwanted progs and you should be OK
#26
Have to agree about the Medion make . Had one recently in for repair , nearly new and had hardly been used , would'nt boot up, password protected BIOS , Battery totally flat & dead [& wont charge] and you cannot buy a new one , tried ebay & Medion . Managed to get it going and gave it back and the customer has said it's packed up again .Give Medion a miss .
#27
Medion service was good about 4-5 yrs ago. Now it's VERY BAD. But £240 is really not that much to koose anyway, so you could take the risk.

Actually 1GB is fine for some people it will help to turn off superfetch (Stupid feature imho).
it's just over £220 what you expect top of the range or something.

For browsing the web and email it should be resonably responsive if properly setup.
#29
I have to admit I reckon 1GB of memory will suffice for most.

Why?

Because in fairness when you buy a laptop of this calibre it's not being used for gaming, CAD or graphic designs purposes. Mostly it's being used for surfing, email, word processing and watching movies. Disable/uninstall the bundled junk and it'll cope with all of the above.

Before someone corrects me, of course it'll run smoother with 2GB as opposed to 1GB ..... but for people unsure of computer specs, don't worry 1GB will do. You've got the option to whack extra memory in there at a later stage if need be.

No idea what Medion are like for customer service and reliability though.
#30
Very tempted by this.

I bought my Medion PC from Aldi in 2002 and it has performed flawlessly.

The only thing I've changed is the monitor - I replaced the original CRT one with a Medion LCD monitor that I bought from my local Somerfield for £99 a few years ago - and I doubled the RAM to 512Mb.

Disappointed to hear that their customer services might be a bit dodgy. Fortunately, I've never had to deal with them.
#31
i havge a 512mb ram and plays vista fine.

Looks like a good deal i just went for one "thanks".

I have just checked this machine out but the spec for a Multimedia Notebook MD96489 on the Medion website is different from woolies i wonder if ours will be what it says or the same as Medions site?.
This machine is for my young daughter i was going to get the pink one but decided on this one because woolies say it has a built in web cam,I hope it does lol.

Looks like a good deal but the specs are confusing. Taking a cue from the prior post I've checked the Woolworths and Medion sites.

If you look carefully at the bottom of Woolworth's product page, under Details you'll find that the product ID is MD 96654
SO here are the specs for Multimedia Notebook MD96654 from Medion website (which, BTW is priced at £299.99 not £349.99 as in Woolworths):

Nobody has mentioned that if it does go physically faulty, it's Woolworths you're dealing with and not Medion. They should replace it no problem, so for the money it's an excellent deal, especially when you do increase the ram to 2Gb or even 3Gb as it's so cheap. I'm an I.T. specialist by the way and this machine will run fine for basic web browsing and document handling, as already stated by a few people in this post. Hot deal.
#35
Well my medion light weight laptop has been great never had any problems. Still worked fine after I dropped it at the airport. Mine was made in the German factory though before they closed it down.

Tip for people buying this. In the graphics options in the bios change it from 128mb to 64mb so as to give a little back to vista. Yes its only 64mb extra but you will notice the difference. (run benchmarks to check)

is this available in store ?

You don't get it do you :) Free RAM isn't doing anything for the speed of your PC. But RAM that's being used my computer for SuperFetch speeds up the loading of commonly used programs. So as you get to 1gb and above Vista actually launches programs faster. Sure it takes longer to boot up but your commonly used programs open up quicker. At the moment I've have 2gb of RAM and 41% of that RAM is free. What is the point of that ~800mb of RAM? It's doing nothing to speed my PC up. People always used to think that having lots of your memory being used was a bad thing. With Vista it's the complete opposite. The more memory Vista uses the faster it will launch your programs :)
1gb is enough for the most basic of users but I'd reccomend 2gb for best operation and memory isn't cheap so you could upgrade. But it's a Medio so it's a bucket of **** :)
#38
Can anyone confirm that this actually has a webcam built in?
#39
I had a bad experience with a Medion laptop bought from Aldi some years ago. The motherboard ‘died’ when the laptop was just out of warranty. I did a few web searches and exactly the same thing had happened to a number of people who had purchased the same laptop. It may have just been that model, but based upon the experience I had, I wouldn't recommend Medion laptops to anyone.
