Bet you were a happy shopper walking away with £30 still in your pocket

I bit a few weeks ago at £39.99 and thought that was good. Its a great piece of kit.

Aldi reductions are store specific (and often one-off items). Excellent deal but I wouldn't recommend travelling far to search for them.

I got one of these and it works really well on Wi-Fi and plugged in. Only issue is, my Android tablet (Asus z500m) detects it when plugged into the USB but says not supported. Don't have a problem with flash drives. Anyone any idea why that may be? If I use the app over WiFi, no problem.

Really need a new hard drive but don't have an Aldi close by :(

Probably incompatible file system format for your tablet. Check whether it's formatted in exFAT or FAT32 - if not and it's NTFS then connecting directly won't work.

Probably because of the amount of electrical power a mechanical drive needs over a USB stick.

I once went to Aldi for one of these deals before
I arrived at 8am and waited until the store opened I was the first person in and went straight to the place they had items
I saw a sign but no items on the shelf
when I asked the manager and he said the items had not arrived

so I waited outside for the truck
After a hour I gave up waiting and went back in and asked the manager who said they had arrived after id gone and they had sold out

Not quite true. Aldi uk is split into 6/7 regions and each of these regions does their own reductions on special buys. Individual stores can also do their own reductions as well.

In response to user connecting to tablet - ollie87 is right if its not got AC power connected its not spinning up OR there's no driver available for the tablet for it to interact with the external hard drive in that way. It will be an either/or case. Hope our advice helps :-)

I've installed one of these in my car, taken out the ECU and flashed it with pre moded software. Now my Nissan Micra sounds and drives like a V8.

Looks like a good buy .. but nobody is mentioning speeds ? I presume this can be used with PC or tablet/phone

What's the difference between this and a NAS?

I think the manager was taking liberties.
I'd find out which one is his/her car and shove an aldi banana up the exhaust.:D

Yes,you can flash the ECU on most moderns cars to change the dynamics/handling depending on your preference.

I'd agree with this, a tablet cannot power a mechanical drive.

Might be worth asking them to scan it at the till as the one I bought was marked up at £59.99 on the ticket.

Nope!.

But I've seen this in both the Goodmaye's and Newbury Park Aldi Stores a few times though ...

It may be worth exploring those 'options' too? (perhaps). :-)

Silly Q. But could I transfer media from my iPhone and my wife's iPhone over wifi direct to the HD or do you need to physically connect the hard drive via USB to a computer to get the photos off and only then can it be seen by other devices on wifi. Hope that makes sense!? oO

What's the difference between this and a NAS?

OK, not a textbook answer, but this is how I see the difference:

NAS systems are usually mini computers in their own right rather than just a hard drive. NAS machines usually do a lot more in terms of serving the data on them eg media streaming, cloud services etc. Most proper NAS machines are installed with RAID disks to provide a level of hardware redundancy such that if one of the drives fails it can be swapped out with a new one with no loss of data.

Basically you're paying more for a more sophisticated device with a NAS.

I would guess the latter.

I have a NAS system which has management software on it and an app on my phone which allows me to transfer across directly. May be wrong but I really doubt this is that sophisticated. So you'd probably have to transfer files onto your computer the normal way and then copy them across to the drive.

There's an app for iPhone/iPad which allows you to transfer over WiFi, a bit clunky but it does work. It also has NFC so that might also work but I haven't played with it yet.

I don't have an iPhone (Have connected iPad over WiFi) but just tried connecting my Android phone using NFC and it worked fine. Just enabled NFC on HDD, put phone on top and it connected when I opened the app. It isn't the most intuitive software but it does work...
