Arthur Golden's blockbuster bestseller, Memoirs Of A Geisha, has been brilliantly brought to the big screen by Oscar-nominated director Rob Marshall. The film opens in a remote Japanese fishing village in 1929, where two sisters, Chiyo and Satsu, are sold by their troubled father to people who place Chiyo in a classy geisha house known as an okiya in Gion and Satsu in a much more vulgar and dangerous district. Chiyo becomes a maid to Hatsumomo, a cold, controlling, and calculating geisha who is instantly jealous of Chiyo's unusual, beautiful eyes and childish innocence. Chiyo is befriended by Pumpkin, another maid at the okiya, but the two are soon driven apart. Chiyo is shown compassion by the Chairman and another, more successful geisha, Mameha, who takes her under her wing as her "little sister," furthering the battle between Chiyo, now called Sayuri, and Hatsumomo. As Sayuri is trained in the art of being a geisha, learning how to walk, talk, dance, and serve (up to a point) in order to please and honor her distinguished male clients, World War II looms on the horizon, threatening to upend Japan and its old ways.

Memoirs Of A Geisha is a lush, sweeping historical and romantic Oscar-winning epic, featuring gorgeous period costumes - primarily the exquisite kimono worn by the geisha. Featuring a fantastic cast of Ziyi Zhang (in her first English speaking role) Michelle Yeoh, Ken Watanabe and Cary Hiroyuki Tagawa with an enchanting score from John Williams.

Winner of 3 Oscars for Best Costume Design, Best Art Direction and Best Cinematography.

£2.99 seems about the right price for a so-so film.
Voted Neutral.

Yes... and?

If film critique is your thing - given that's all you've contributed, in this thread, on your performance I'm voting you cold and the deal hot ;-)

OK, for all the Barry Normans in this thread...

A film like this is always going to be compared with the novel, and invariably not particularly favourably - but I think they did a reasonable job with the time constraints they had to play with.

The visuals are stunning, it was truly filmed well. The actors all competent and performed well - some exceptionally so.

The story was charming, paced well, and was wonderful escapism.

For all the detractors, what precisely is it about the film that was so objectionable? I mean it was no Armageddon, I'll grant you, but all the same...

Odd, but OK then, I'll buy you objected to the dialogue. So surely you have some examples, then?

"We could" (check imdb reviews). But that would tell me what other people opined about it.

You criticised it, and you mentioned specifics, so I kinda thought that maybe you had specifics you could cite, but apparently not...

I'm not trying to suggest there's anything wrong in simply not liking a film - farm from it, but when you step forward, and mention specific things you thought were poor, I guess I just thought you'd be able to elaborate on your specific issues with it. As I said, though, guess not...

I have specifics I can cite, but it would be a waste of time if you're going to pull my posts apart as before, just too combatative and unproductive

but talking about live action films set in Japan, I found 9 souls, Dare mo shiranai, Last Life in the Universe (not set in japan, but asano was brilliant), hana-bi, zatoichi, kikujiro, mushishi, young thugs: nostalgia, tampopo, seven samurai, survive style 5+, shinobi, even tetsuo where all much better fims than this and armageddon

Why so? All I asked is whether you could cite the things you said you specifically didn't like.

So many people jump in and completely slate a film, as if it was truly awful from an objective perspective, then when asked to elaborate, go a big silent one.

It's one thing to simply say "I didn't like it..." - fair comment to make - to saying "the acting, dialogue and story was objectionable to me" but when questioned on these very specific aspects, don't actually reference anything.

I'm rather suprised that somebody didn't pick up on my obvious sarcasm, there, with Armageddon ;-)
