I can think of two reasons:

1. License fee payable to Sony.
2. They are less commonly used than SD cards.

I get the impression that Sony doesn’t widely license the format as you tend to see only Sandisk and Sony cards. It could be a mini cartel! :x

Sony is always more expensive because they are a market leader in technology. They spend billions of $ on research and the profit fuels the technological advances. Companies with a huge portfolio of products always need to charge much more than niche companies. Moreover in order to stay as a brand leader they spend huge amount of money in advertising and media relations.

I know what you mean but in this case aren’t we just talking about yet another Sony proprietary standard that they can control and sell at an exorbitant price! Flash memory is not a Sony invention AFAIK otherwise it would all be expensive. You can buy some very fast flash memory that is not Memory Stick but I don’t tend to see fast Memory Stick cards advertised. It’s a closed shop which stifles competition and inflates prices which suits Sony.
Ideally I would never buy Sony proprietary products but I won’t let that stop me buying a decent Sony product that uses one. My Sony Ericsson phone uses Memory Stick M2 cards which is not ideal but I like the phone and got it at a good price from 3 so I was pragmatic about it.
