You can get USB sticks with 16gb now, are these hdd really that much faster?

you can get 32gb USB flashdrives for around the £32 mark. you would be far better off with one of those instead. the item listen used to be around the £80 mark before USB drives got cheaper

Speed is not the only issue. I've long used a Maxell HDD (lower capacity but physically smaller and lighter and also with folding plug) for my portable apps as some of them can be configured to keep their datastore and/or cache on the drive rather than on the host machine and use of the drive means I sidestep the issue of memory wear.

I suppose you would have to add tax and import dury to this if customs opens it, no?!

Customs duty won't be much but VAT will be almost £4 and Royal Mail will charge a £8 "admin" fee for collecting the charges. Takes the price to almost £40. Still, it might sneak in under the wire.
