I like your analogy, it misses the point completely, but was funny none the less.

'Stuff' doesn't have to be technically excellent to make people want to buy it, staying on the car theme, Air cooled VW Camper vans are hideous to drive, slow, terrible on fuel and not that great for camping in - yet they command stupid sums of money because people like them for no other reason than they look cool.
There's a Citroen DS drop top on eBay at the moment for £149k - a CITROEN!!
andymagic
How much do IBM XT's go for these days?

This original selling price - $7,449 US. Now selling for $2000 US if anyone is stupid enough to pay it. Loss $5,449 US.
IBM XT original selling price - $3,000 US. Now worth $0 or makes a great door stop. Loss $3,000 US.

This is like the old Porsche 911s - drove like a bag o carp - so much so that the motoring press uniformly declared the rear engined Skoda of the time a better alternative. But people prefer the Porsche because of the badge on the bonnet. There's just no logic to why people would spend loads of money on it other than people ejaculating in their pants because of a picture of an Apple with a bite taken out of it.
These were some of the last machines from a directionless and quickly sinking Apple, shortly before Steve Jobs was brought back in from exile. They were massively overpriced and underpowered when compared to other systems made by Apple around that time, and represented style over substance more than anything else. Original styling was by Bang and Olufsen, sound by Bose, the rest came from leftovers out of the Performa and Powerbook parts bins. They didn't sell well and remaining stock was sold for a fraction of the original price when Jobs returned. 15 years later they make a wonderful sounding objet d'art but £1299 is a lot to pay when they can be found for about half that (or less) on eBay when they crop up...

They say that Apple products hold their value more than regular PCs....

Well considering the original selling price of this, perhaps that's not so accurate.

Also, the ASUS could do with a better stock video player. That was the strength of the Archos 101. At present the ASUS is giving users the same problem as the iPad... who can be bothered converting downloaded or recorded video files to the appropriate format, when all you want to do is drag and drop and watch... Which is more or less what you could do with an Archos plus the relevant plugins.

i would use vplayer / rock player / vital player, seems to be play most video files fine...

Really good speakers!

So many other speakers out there like Sony for £50 and they're total garbage!

Must buy speakers!
Hi,what sort of length of speaker wire is there? between them and the subwoofer?
Brillaint set of speakers. I have the II's and cant fault them whatsoever! I only paid £30 from asda last year too.
I also have the Harman Kardon Sound Sticks II and I totally prefer the Creature.

thats a pretty erudite discussion of the voting system around here
one of you should write it up as a PhD thesis
That's a pretty witty observation: you should do stand-up.
Not me personally, but presumably those that have written essays in this thread do!

EDIT : Oh, your post seems to have been deleted!
I'm sorry as I seemed to have started all this!

My original point was that you (fanpages) stipulated the "boundaries of voting hot/cold" after a post where the person had expressed an opinion of this deal not being great as there are cheaper alternatives that perform a similar function, but they hadn't actually voted at all, which led to my initial confusion, which fp then cleared up....this has then escalated dramatically out of control after that!!!

Personally I vote hot on a deal if it's a lower price compared to a previous price or where it can be bought at a more expensive price elsewhere. If I think the item is overpriced in comparison to other items that can do a similar job, as this item is an example of, then i wouldn't vote either way, but maybe comment on it, if I felt I wanted to.

You could always provide your opinion. That would be a better explanation; but thank you for trying to have a rational discussion.

So, voting is left to personal interpretation of what a "hot" (or "cold") deal is?

In that case, the voting system need not be implemented at all.

You may as well just look at the product, the price and, maybe to a lesser or greater extent depending on your past dealings, the retailer.

Is that fair?

BFN,

fp.

You should always do all those things anyway before making a purchasing decision.

A deal's heat value isn't an indicator of how good the deal is to any one person, it's nothing more than a general indicator of quality set down by the crowd. The hotter the deal the more likely it will be of interest to the average user and the more worthy it is of being brought to the attention of the masses.

Don't get me wrong, voting on the monetary saving is an important part of this. But so is voting on product quality. Many voters only vote on price, some vote on opinion of the product and for other reasons. We only get to vote hot or cold, under a binary system diversity in heat relies on diversity in opinion.

If everyone voted the same way we wouldn't need a vote.

As evidenced in this deal, plenty of people vote hot on the saving regardless of product quality compared to its competitors. If somebody makes a cold vote based on quality, it doesn't mean they're saying the deal should be cold, it means they're saying it shouldn't be as hot.

If I only wanted to spend £1000 on a telly, no matter how good, would u call me cheap?

I'm sure this tv is the nuts but to me even a heavily discounted price point appears to be prohibitive.

I found that Panasonic choose not to show any fast moving images, I too found it to be the best and probably the one I will buy but a proper judgement can not be made without playing the same demo material on all of them.

The Panasonic being a Plasma tv will use a lot more power than this lcd tv so that could be a problem for some.

I agree would be nice to see them all playing the same demo side by side
tpol;8364356
There are a number of reasons why I would not buy a LG 3D TV.
- First of all their 3D system uses a 'polarised' filter/glasses system as opposed to the Panasonic which uses an 'active shutter' system which is purported to be significantly better.
- LG uses a LCD panel with LED back backlighting, whereas Panasonic uses a NeoPDP Plasma panel and it is acknowledged that these panel provide more natural representation. The new Panasonic NeoPDP panels are now closer to the Kuro panels, thus black representation will be faultless.
- Panasonic 3D panels won the CES 2010 Innovation Award and the Best of Show Award.

The LG also uses 'active shutter' (which is not neccessarily a good thing!)
Have you personally seen this LG compared to the Panasonic?
dmaster2000;8364004
what r u suprised about? everyone knows panasonic plasmas are the best picture quality. lol

Yes but the fact that there are now full led screens out (with local dimming) and the LG being 400hz, I was hoping that this was going to be way beyond a plasma tv :?

Although one bad thing I can say about the Panasonic is that it only comes with one pair of glasses! lol Seems to be implying something to anyone thinking of buying their tv...

It's a very good note/netbook but you can get it for £399 from Argos with 3gb ram or get PC World to price match Argos and beat it by 10% for £360 ish
Isn't this based around the 751 netbook? That generally sugggests it looks good but carppy build quality and flexi keyboard etc. so I wouldn't feel confident this was any better?
doesn't this unit suffer with the "The One With Joey's Porsche" syndrome???

If you have a Ferrari you wouldn't have one.... if you'd have one of these you couldn't afford a Ferrari

it's also a another step up from having a MAC purely because they're white and shiny
While this is a great laptop if you can put up with the garish styling the deal is poor....didn't spend any real time searching and already found Amazon are selling at £378.

1gb dd2 graphics memory means just that its dedicated to just graphics performance
4gb of ram is for the laptop none will be taken by graphics card
this is good spec but i need bluray

32 bit Windows can only address 4GB of RAM in total - so if the GPU has 1GB available to it, that's only 3GB left that the OS can address (irregardless of how much it has access to).

Knock off a bit for the bios/adaptors (which all count as part of the total addressable memory) and you have this 2.5GB limit people are talking about (e.g. 4GB of main memory is a waste unless you upgrade to a 64bit OS).
good find, ordered one!! heat added!!
couldnt seem to find anything in this price bracket with a better graphics card!!
ps i think they do a version with bluray player, also do a version with the 240m card, but its a fair bit more.
cheers!!!!

Its not a great thing to be honest...I bought one for my daughter to take abroad with her as its small and light but the sound is average at best especially the bass, on the plus side it doesn't annoy her flatmates...if a good room filling sound is important then look for something else.
Is this the same as the onstage 3 as it looks exactly the same with the same attachments.... if this is the case then the iphone (3g and 3gs) plays through it, it doesn't charge though, but still can be controlled via the remote.

Also, i bought it from tesco for £21 which was on here....
What I want to know if these come all the latest dock adapters in the box (ie: classic and iPhones).

Compatibility
JBL On Stage Micro incorporates the Apple iPod Universal Dock adapter and is compatible with most docking versions of iPod, including nano and 5G versions. A stereo mini jack connection also allows you to enjoy high- quality audio from a variety of other devices such as MP3 and CD players, desktop computers and laptops (all platforms).
cool thanks
alan6012;7259975
whats the sound off it like - would it fill a room?

Only if the room is quiet. If you want bass, buy bigger, otherwise these are pretty good (have to be at this price).

the Sony Centre in Leamington Spa is selling these for £549, same price as Dixons Tax Free shops - and both are valid for claiming back £150 from Sony.

Suggest you try your local Sony Centre
That is a very good price. Unfortunately the Sony Centre in Tottenham Court Road (where I bough my P11Z from Mikro Anvika) wanted £649 before cashback. I think that the Sony Centres are franchises these days, so they can probably set their own prices.

I would normally exclude Dixons airport shops (they are not really "tax free") from deals, as they are located airside and so are only available to people who are flying, but as you say they also have this PC for £549..
You could try one of the variety of 10% + vouchers from Additons etc. and 10% quidco and the sony cashback. Official Additions price is £579. Takes the final price closer to a more realistic £320.
I vote cold - the Sony Centre in Leamington Spa is selling these for £549, same price as Dixons Tax Free shops - and both are valid for claiming back £150 from Sony.

Suggest you try your local Sony Centre
I bought a red one from play.com for £10 more on Tuesday, seems a great price given the £150 cashback and Win 7 upgrade.
These 1.3 GHz Atom models seem to be getting reduced so the new faster (upto Atom 2 GHz, bigger hard disks) models can be launched, but they will cost a lot more.

Many of the reviews discuss this model running slowly using Vista, but a good improvement under the Win 7 beta and RC, so I am hoping performance will not be an issue after the upgrade.

Note battery life with the standard battery is not meant to be amazing (a little over 2 hours under load), however you can buy an extended battery for about £120, or buy the next model up (Sony Vaio P19WN/Q) for £100 more which comes with both the standard and extended battery and Vista Business (instead of Vista HP with the P11Z) but only comes in black.

ahhh the other christmas my uncle had actually just bought the one pictured originally (not the wireless one) and it was great fun! Have wanted one since but wont if its the wireless little one - only for me to muck arounf on anyway as im crap at mixing!!
Not bad for the price, I had one (paid considerably more years back) but didn't like it that much - exchanged for (and still have) a Behringer BCD2000

As above the one pictured is not whats on offer here.

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41PCe0sUawL._SL500_AA280_.jpg

I had the misfortune to try the wireless one, it was a piece of crap. I took it back and got the one that is actually pictured which is great for mixing.
Just a heads up guys, I looked at this on Micro Anvika a while back and my findings where that it is most probably not the one pictured - but the smaller 'wireless' one as they have herehttp://www.amazon.co.uk/Hercules-Mobile-MP3-Wireless-Mixer/dp/B000JGWDI2/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1246794976&sr=8-4

If you check the product codes they seem to match each other - still a great price though, just thought I'd mention it incase people get mislead.

I saw this the other day inside Micro Anvika in London. There is a slightly updated Time Capsule for £229 which operates on both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands (the latter illegal in the UK but meh). Its pretty straight forward, i think the only issues at the moment are sound drivers i.e headphone port not working properly (don't know if its been fixed yet it was supposed to be fixed by now) and i believe that you can use the wifi card that it comes with as well so no need to swap that out either, the only other thing possibly is the ethernet as thats a problem with most netbooks,

Following my post a few days ago, I spotted a pull out from Stuff magazine about Microanvika !

So I will suck back on that and say they must be legitimate with at least 6 shops in the G.London area:oops:

hi.
an update.
i have recieved my item (ipod itouch 16gb, with itrip).
it is fantastic, the version is 1.1.5.

great find, thanks very much!

I ordered mine before yours and i havent received it yet...hmm!
I think the site is legitimate (as someone stated before that it wasnt) I just think with the new 2G ipod touch coming in to stock the 1st generation has taken a side ways step and so they are not so readily available. I think quite a few ordered simply from this post and therefore the site couldnt handle the amount of excess orders.

Edit: Mine has arrived but I have a 'while you were out card' so havent seen the item yet

I paid £199 (plus Quidco) for my 530's. They're listed at £329.99 on this site! :w00t:

i think you misunderstood, bianco is stating that other shure retailers prices are still cheaper without this gimmiky discount. So most likely the prices are increased to allow for the discount beforehand, therefore you are getting a false saving.

their prices haven't increased to recoup the discount as the discount is from shure not micro anvika therefore they aren't really going to lose much.
Shure E3c would work out at £56.25. These are brilliant headphones.

I think it's not fair to ask others to search and post links. What they gave is an opinion based on their information about lappy market. If they have a link readily available, they would have posted it already. The whole point of us getting together in this forum is to hear about other's opinion and share information, isn't it?. If you feel someone is not right, point it out, but not aggressively please.

I have been searching around for laptops for quite a few months and bought 2 infact. Based on information I gathered over that period, this is very overly priced. Please don't ask me to go back and find the links to those deals! :-D If you want a deal, be patient and you will find one sooner or later. But if you are after a specific feauture(light weight laptop for example), you may have to wait longer.

I think it's not fair that people make the effort to post an obviously hot deal (currently 350+ degs hot) and whingers come in with useless incorrect comments.

I could say that I can buy a better spec 17" or 15" laptop than this, but how is that relevant??? Post that info on a deal thread about 17" or 15" laptops. Don't clog up a useful thread like this with pointless incorrect opinions and then have the arrogance to debate and argue about it.

End of story on this point.
I inderstand the portabiltiy issue, as I was looking for a 12-13" laptop a few months ago. As I said previously it's successor, the Q210, is £100 more at Argos. If you look around the net, you can get the Q210 for around £550? Saveonsamsung springs to mind? I don't think this is VERY overpriced, but SLIGHTLY overpriced. I think if it was at the £400-450 mark, then it would be a good deal.

You see, this is where I have doubt. This laptop, if you only look at it from a High-Performance point of view, is overpriced. If you are going to use a laptop as a desktop replacement, then it is stupid to pay more for a smaller screen, you may as well get the benefit of a large screen and pay less. But if portability is important for you, then I disagree that this laptop is "very overly priced".

I am not asking you to find a link but at least, from memory, could you give us an idea of what you remember seeing as a good price for a highly portable laptop with small-ish form factor, less than 2Kg in weight, long battery life and decent enoug specs to run almost anything apart from games and video processing? I mean, if you do remember seeing something like that for less than £400, please tell, you would save a lot of peoples from making a bad purchase.

As far as I can see, say comparing to a Dell, this laptop is closer to a XPS M-series or a Latitude D-series (which tend to retail in the £600+) than a Vostro 1000 at £250. So one must compare oranges to orange, and it seems to me than when I do that, this is certainly not a bad price.

This is not dissimilar to some post in EEE PC deals where someone say that you can get a Vostro 1000 for the same price as a EEE900 and the Vostro has better specs! It doesn't. Some of the specs of the Vostro are better, some are worse, it depends what you value or need. This laptop for example, with 1.89Kg and 5 hours battery life could almost be considered by someone that was looking at a EEE1000. (not a 700 or 900 which are much more portable)

You are fighting a losing battle PJ..........

334°, obviously not losing that badly

You're right, this is just about peoples opinions, and the collective opinion is that obviously this is a hot deal. Deals don't go to 300+ deg unless the majority of people think it's a good deal.

/response to quote

There are so many people here who simply don't grasp that not everyone has the same needs at them. It's incredibly short sighted. The people screaming this is expensive for the spec simply don't understand that for the professional on the go this is a great machine. Such a person simply doesn't need a "good graphics chip" eating away at their precious battery life or a huge display that will mean it's bulky and heavy. Those who slate this laptop probably only use theirs around the house and plugged into the mains at all times and simply don't get it.

Just out of interest Tesco direct are selling them £130 delivered

See http://direct.tesco.com/q/R.200-0520.aspx
Bought one of these when they first came out. Would agree with the comments in the review listed above. Wonderfully compact camera, intuitive menu with all common controls easily accessed. The large screen makes it easy to use particularly for someone with eyesight not what it used to be. Screen even works well in sunlight. Also has good battery life.

Casio use two main model numbering sequences for the Exilim range, Z and S models. I have never figured out the differences but the S is normally significantly more expensive than the Z.
Had this camera for a while - takes pretty decent pictures, good quality video, and is very easy to use, above average quality LCD on the back - the camera is relatively quick too! (plus memory is very cheap)
