A heads-up to any University students out there: your University can often get you Microsoft software (Office, XP etc) for FREE. Check out your computing services department or equivalent.

In theory, you are meant to stop using the software after you cease to be a student, but in reality, nothing tends to happen. This was the case at Liverpool Uni (NOT John Moores), I can tell you that much.

Otherwise, this deal is not too bad for those that can't get it free through their academic institution. (though I tend to use AVG Free for Anti-virus)

The Office Ultimate deal is a better offer if you are a student and don't have the free access through your university.
As fox said AVG free is fantastic.

I'm sure back in the day when I was at PCW, they sold the current Office Student with an Epson C40 printer, pack of paper and USB cable for £120 ... !

I use Openoffice.org 2.3

Completely FREE for EVERYONE to download.

Just as good as MS Office.

I cant find this deal anywhere on the Staples web site.

Note that MS Office Home and Student only consists of Word Excel, Powerpoint and One Note.

Note the license DOES allow you to install it on 3 PCs.

If you are a student (with an *.ac.uk email address) then you can get Office Ultimate for £38.95 to keep and can install it on your desktop PC and on your laptop and the version you get is the full business version with more software.

Open Office is indeed free, but it lacks a LOT of features and is quite tricky to get used to for those of us that have a lot of experience in Office. It's not the friendliest, but hey - it's free.

Open Office is indeed ABSOLUTELY FREE.

Download it - it has the vast majority of features in MS Office - it reads and writes to .doc / .xls / .ppt, etc, etc. For most uses, it does everything you need. It looks the same - but yes - it'll takes you about 15 - 20 minutes to get used to - same action uses slightly different menu roots from MS to get there

IT IS FREE - and it sticks the finger to MS and there whole attitude to screwing us - based on my experience with Apple - buy someone else's MP3, MP4 - it's just the same.

Another vote for open office here! (Or NeoOffice for mac users.)

We use Macs at work with office 04 on. The only problem is that they don't open docx unless you buy Office 08! I thought i'd give NeoOffice a try (It's just open office, but for mac.) Docx files can now be opened and you can do most of the things in open office that you can do in Office! The things that you can't do probably aren't worth doing. open office has come a long way since its release and it's latest version is worth a try. I'm going to roll it out on the computers at work as i believe the staff will be able to get used to it! I also now use this at home.

Hope this helps
