The Surface 2 4g has £50 off just now. First posting so hopefully I've covered everything. No need to compare between iPad or android tablets on here, each have their own advantages. For me this is perfect for work, office, internet explorer, etc, as well as access to apps on the store.

More scared of trying to sort out the install media for Windows 8!

More a fan of the screen ratio on the Surface* (*name no longer used by MS Internally) Lumia Pro 3, so not a complete 'hater', but always think its far better to justify a product based on its own positives, than attempt to blame its somehow the user's ignorance for 'not purchasing' the Surface Pro 2, its not. The competition is very strong, entrenched, have great ecosystems, build quality & price-(even Apple if you shop around). Even a single version of the install media in the case of OSX (per release).

Windows 8 (Hate point none) is such a moving target/work in progress, that you'll spend an hour just updating it out the box. Most people can't be bothered with that anymore. Windows Update is such a frustrating bag of nails, yes it works, but Microsoft really need to sort it out, if they are basing the whole marketing on 'Rapid Release'.

Here's why:

Just dealing with a problem where the user upgraded from Windows 7, to Windows 8, added WME (Windows Media Edition) then to Windows 8.1, then to Windows 8.1 Update 1 (Stupid name). User decided to do a simple (so called) 'Refresh' restoring it to a clean system.

Windows 8.1 Update 1 with WME, is stating 'missing files' please insert media...What media? USB,DVD. What Language? US,UK,etc, What Version? Starter, Home Premium, Professional, Ultimate. What Product? Windows 8 Media, Windows 8.1 Media, Windows 8.1 Update 1 Media.

There isn't media for Windows 8.1 Update 1 WME, only an ESD file. So you can merge this ESD with an original Windows 8.1 (Home Premium, Pro, Ult etc) in the specified language (separate 'english' versions for US, and UK, just to make it even more of a pain)

Can you download any of these Windows 8 ISOs easily from Microsoft? Not really.

Basically Windows 8.1 Update 1, is a mess and it needs sorting out. One install disk Microsoft. Are you Listening?

I just can't be bothered with all the 'getting under the bonnet' anymore, when I have Linux and OSX systems that just work.

There, there's my reason for hating Windows 8.

This is only the Surface 2 with RT, not the Pro with full Windows on it.

So easy to make that mistake isn't it ;). Microsoft don't call it RT (Windows Runtime) anymore. They call it Windows Surface 2 or the Windows Surface 2/3 Pro (Running 'Windows 8' -you're expected to know the difference!), they want you to think its one and the same, when they are two very different beasts.

If you confuse people enough, they will stay away.

Don't confuse people further!, its not Windows? But its a MS Surface running Windows? ;), Windows 8 is a can of worms to navigate in terms of solving problems due to so many versions. I hate everything about MS Windows RT (RT-sorry can't call it that!)/8 'Rapid Release' as possible, and the fact MS can't produce a single install media (per release) like OSX.

Windows 8.1 Update 1 isn't that bad, its just badly implemented by MS, MS Marketing team.

Its not 5 years, this is 12 months of multiple releases in multiple formats, in multiple languages, try supporting it. They aren't even 'good' releases, MS are throwing what they can at the wall and seeing if it sticks, but now they are in the wild, they have to be supported.
By the way, the problem above 'Windows 8.1 Update 1 System Refresh media missing; - still not solved, f'in impossible.

(Its a rant, but its a rant in the hope MS will sort themselves out)

Have you owned and regularly used this specific device?

Have you owned and regularly used this specific device?
Certain people get given them. I'm assuming you must too have been given a Surface too ;), because you have managed to make 3 Posts in 2 Years on HUKD.
Do you need some help using your Surface or something?

I knows its impossible to book a Travelodge on a Windows Phone, but surely HUKD is not hard to use on a Surface.

Its a bit of loaded (baited) question as so few people actually own 'own them', they're not exactly selling like hotcakes.

I know no one that actually 'owns', owns one, i.e. paid hard earned cash for one. I have used the Surface (RT) though. Its a nice bit of hardware (to clariify - hardware, always liked MS Hardware), but it has an uphill struggle against the iPad, and somewhat the Air/iPad combo, in terms of the overall package. This is partly due to the poor experience of full blown Windows 8 on the desktop. (My rant being - its Windows 8->Winodws 8.1 Update 1 is support nightmare, due to rapid release cycles)

The people I have to work alongside got given Surfaces for free, so I get to use them because of this, but if you ask, they prefer their Lenovos.

These people that got given Surfaces for free ;), they also use iPads (shock, horror), and use Linux to provide a 'sticking plaster' support for Windows, in terms of regular backups. Its no longer a Microsoft Centric 'dogfood' world.

Personally, I think MS's heart isn't in mobile/Arm (software terms) anyway, are skipping mobile to become an 'underneath' devices - cloud/enterprise company. MS make more from Android licensing than selling Surface, specifically they actually make money from Android, its not some loss making venture. Why keep trying to develop a new ecosystem when you get a big chunk of revenue from Android. If MS ditch Windows RT in its current form, no one is going to be surprised. Just hope there is an upgrade path for you. If the new Surface Mini is a 'Pro' it has quietly being ditched.

Just like WP7, Windows RT is starting to look like a 'stepping stone' product, its served its purpose, move on.

Sugar Lumps - my bad, didn't realise it was the cripple of the family - the RT.

I have a first gen surface (using that just now to post this) and have ordered the one from this deal. It covers all the bases I need and the inclusion of office is perfect for my needs. This post was about a deal which, at the time, I thought was the cheapest place you could find one. Luckily, you don't have too buy one if you don't want one so get over it.

It is starting to look like Surface RT is no more...
Has the Surface has gone underground?
