I'm getting 6-8 hours on my i5 which is really good - these are great machines, but they still need refining.

I have had a lot of problems and exchanges with the SP3/4. Noisy fans, overheating, battery problems, broken kickstand etc.

If you develop ANY minor issue which needs fixing after warranty expires, you have to pay an extortionate amount to get a replacement as they don't offer repairs - 333 pounds for the SP3. Can't remember what it is for the SP4.

maybe £444?

4gb is plenty for most things. Window 10 will happily run on 2gb with basic programs. Although power users may want 8gb but then I'd expect they need a bigger ssd and i7 too

If it had 16gb someone would say its ashame is has not got something else such as a bigger drive or larger screen. People should look at the positives rather than the negatives. Happy Christmas all

I find 4GB on my SP3 is fine but I think the SP4 replacement is due soon (hence price drops) and would hope they come with 8GB on the base model next time round - in the same way Apple finally saw sense and dropped the 16GB iPhone model from its lineup.

My other half has an SP3 and I have the i7 SP4 and other than some (now resolved) software bugs, have had no issues.

I'd be all over this deal if I didn't already have mine.

Great machine but I only get 4-5 on the same spec Surface. Don't believe the 9hours advertised.

That's realistically what I achieve, I suspect you could do better by carefully choosing to run low power apps, but 9 hours seems rather optimistic, I've got a Poweradd power pack which gives me nearly 2x recharges from flat, which should be perfect for transatlantic flights.

is that with the keyboard attached? if so that is disappointing
#12
The surface pros keyboard doesn't have a battery in it so it doesn't really make a difference if it's connected or not.

My partner has a core m version and that gets about 6-7 hours under typical use.

People on here are always presenting an excuse not to buy - I think they are trying to impress, but I don't know who.

Presumably the keyboard draws some power?

You would need to add £40-£50 for the pen but still cheaper than the Black Friday deal from Microsoft.
#17
Fantastic price, just bought one for click and collect to replace one (already wrapped!) from Microsoft direct - even with their student discount and 2 x £30 credit from Amex, this is £100 cheaper for an i5 (vs the M chip).

Do any models not ship with a pen in the box?

Yep. This keyboard bundle was available throughout Black Friday week from Amazon, Argos, Currys & John Lewis. No pen included.
#21
Pen is useless anyway
#22
Collected today.... No pen, have to buy separately if needed...

How do you manage to recharge Surface from a power bank? Do you have to use a specific power bank? Need adapters? Asking as I have a power bank for the iphone etc and would love to use it for my surface too.
#25
Shame John Lewis wouldn't price match this or I'd be all over it. Cracking price

you can get power packs for the surface. not seen a way to charge from any old power pack unfortunately.

Took the plunge and bought one. Thanks OP.

I bought mine at black friday, Do you think Currys will refund the price difference with it being only a couple weeks ago?

If you haven't opened it then you could return & buy again. They have an extended Xmas return window for goods bought between 2nd Nov & Xmas eve.
Otherwise with Black Friday being a month ago I can't see them helping you.

Even if you have opened it, buy another one now and return the new one on the black friday receipt (assuming everything is identical other than price)

It has to be a special powerbank that can output 12-15V (this is usually switchable) and is output through a standard power socket type connection, some come with a Surface Pro 4 cable (which is different if you've got a Core M processor, I believe) or you can pick up one from Amazon/Ebay.

My battery is this one https://www.amazon.co.uk/Poweradd-23000mAh-Multi-Voltage-Portable-Notebooks/dp/B013HXKZYW/ref=sr_1_11?ie=UTF8&qid=1482624245&sr=8-11&keywords=poweradd

My cable is this one https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01C0EH94I/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I did have a different pack at first, but it only managed 1.5x charging, for a capacity (supposedly) far greater than the Poweradd, it came with a cable. If you're flying you need to ensure the capacity is below the airline limit, the Poweradd one is 85Wh as far as I remember which is good for BA, not sure about the others.

The Poweradd is a nice pack, the format is manageable for storing in a laptop bag, it comes with a fast charger and a good selection of laptop connectors (though not a surface one) and the % indicator LED is really useful.

I did look at building a converter from 5V to 12V, as it's not exactly rocket science, but to be worth anything you need a decent capacity, meaning you're looking at the laptop type power packs anyway - unless you go cheap Chinese where the numbers written on the pack have no bearing on the actual capacity inside.

Too right, once I close down Visual Studio and SQL Server, my Surface Pro 4 rarely uses more than 4GB, currently 3.7GB running a load of browser sessions, office and a handful of other apps. That's before Windows has to handle memory efficiently, which it does these days, and don't forget the page file is on solid state storage so isn't quite like the old days of optimising the location on the spinning disk to get performance.

8GB is a nice to have feature, but no where near as important as a larger SSD, which can be mitigated with a micro sd card to some extent, but is probably something you'd miss sooner than the lack of ram.

Problem is it doesn't look like JL stock the bundle.

Good deal, if your not going to use for GPU performance then this is best bang for buck.

otherwise purchase a Macbook if you require performance
