#4
this seems to allow family members and guardians, etc.

I am eligible for academic copies but thought someone with a kid at school, etc might find this one handy.

thanks for the link

It says on there website contradictory information:

"This version of Windows 7 ships as an upgrade edition. It is NOT possible or permitted to perform a clean install with this product. You must have an existing valid Windows operating system on your hard disk."

It states further up that you can do a clean install!

Is this a legality thing? Which means you can actually do a clean install but are legally meant to do install over the top of xp?

thanks
Martin

It means it will look to see if you have an eligible O/S and then install from scratch rather than just upgrade. Thats what it did when I had to do a clean install on a previous system.

did you buy the same version? I tried it and it told me one copy only. any more and i would be in breach of agreement. not that that bothers some people but if you are not bothered you may as well get it illegally for free.

If you're going to do that, then you might just as well download Win7 off Bittorrent - it'll be just as legit

I managed to buy one in my 6yr old son's name and his school is listed when I go to select the school...

I'd also like to know the answer to this question. I have an ac.uk email address. I'd like to put it on an acer revo but I don't have a version of windows on it, just a bare drive.

get any legit or otherwise copy of vista/xp install it dont put in a serial code so its in trial then run the programme that installs 7 install custom and use an alternate partition/drive and then you can delete the vista/xp bit and 7 will work fine. (and fully legit)

Some guidance on using Upgrade for a full install.....

Just do what I did. I bought an upgrade version and not a full retail version. I built the PC from scratch (so no other OS was on it beforehand) installed windows 7 from the upgrade disc. When it asks for a product key, don't type anything and just hit "Cancel" or "ok" or whatever the button is (I can't remember). You can use any install for 30 days without a product key. Then put in the disc when running the 30 day "trial" windows 7 and reinstall the exact same disc on top of that. Now that you are upgrading from a previous windows installation (even though you never entered a key for it) you can install it properly and use the key that comes for it and it will work forever.

Yes and no. Least I'd know I was getting a proper, unhacked copy with a valid product key, that wouldn't have much risk of malware, and that I wouldn't have to patch everytime MS released a service pack.

MS would also win too, as they'd get £30 they wouldn't get otherwise, as I never, ever, EVER, EVER consider paying £150 for it, but I think £30's reasonable.
