You don't have to be a student to benefit from this deal. You simply have to know a kid who's in school (Guardian), I think almost everyone does.
#2
I bought this last week and took the download option. No glitches and I had the new OS installed less than an hour later.
#3
Can u buy this and use the serial on a non upgrade version or windows 7? instead of installing windows vista then upgrading?

You can actually do a full install on a clean machine using this version. I did and no complaints so far.

Unfortunately the ultimate steal requires an appropriate email address, and while I am eligible I don't have one of 'those' email addresses.

I bought mine on Friday for £2 more, thinking it wouldn't get any cheaper... :(

So how come did you do a clean install? Did you just need the xp key you already had?

I purchased Windows 7 Professional 64-bit from 'The Ultimate Steal' around New Year, and because I was upgrading from a 32-bit OS (XP) I had to do a clean install. I used the same DVD image that I would have used to upgrade, I simply booted from the DVD deleted the existing partition and installed into a brand new partition. It may have searched the HDD for an existing Windows installation during DVD boot-up, I can't remember exactly.

But I think, could be very wrong, most Windows installation discs will allow you to install the full OS from boot-up. What would happen if your HDD died and you had to replace it, how else would you be able to install on a brand new HDD that was going into your existing computer?

I think the check may take place depending on the License key you enter, as it will detect it is an upgrade key. Older Windows used to ask for a CD of a previous Windows installation disc to be entered.

I would always suggest a clean install anyway.

On the first install I didn't enter a serial key, Windows then assumed I was using a trial version. Then disc went back in and it upgraded my trial Windows 7 to the full 64 bit version. Yes you are probably correct - it isn't 100% legit, so to speak, but as I was upgrading from a 32 bit o/s I wanted a complete new install. This disc has the full version and and as blythyftm has confirmed it is possible to install fully. Hope this helps.

I too installed with an upgrade DVD on a blank hard disk without needing qualifying media or serials from a previous Windows. Registration was a bit arsy but I followed method 2 here http://www.winsupersite.com/win7/clean_install_upgrade_media.asp Works a treat.

Bare in mind I got copy more or less on release date so the aforementioned changes may have put a stop to this method.

all upgrade win 7 can do clean install. mostly because you can't install 64bit system over previous non-64 ones.
#13
I used these guys and upgraded from XP to Windows 7 doing a clean install. No problems what so ever.

I seem to think that you just needed to have an OS to be able to upgrade if that makes sense. So if you have XP you are allowed to use this to upgrade to Windows 7.

If you had a brand new PC with no OS it may be different. Im sure someone will correct me if im wrong!

Can I used this on a Mac via Bootcamp? Will this work as there is no previous installation of Windows?

It should go fine shaun, I've installed 2 PCs with upgrade versions, 1 with a previous vista where I formatted the drive during install and once with a brand new drive going into an existing pc, where the original drive had been removed, so as far as Windows installation was concerned it was a new PC.

I've not used bootcamp, but did use VMware Workstation to install XP on a Mac for a friend and it went smoothly, no problems at all.

Thanks for your help Willie - greatly appreciated. I think I might buy this for my MBP.

Rep added.

Anything from £90 upwards. I think Play have it just now for £139.99, might give you some idea...

I go to liverpool john moores university and can get this and loads of other microsoft software for free. all legitimate versions supplied with serials etc.

I do have that Upgrade...I'm currently using it on my nettop... It would happily install on a blank harddrive ( mis-phrased it earlier) but it won't activate.
I had to install an old copy of xp ( and it doesn't have to be activated nor genuine) so when 7 is installed it would activate normally.

Not only me....everyone I know who has it had to do the same thing.....with all due respect to Google of course!

Depends on your computer specification, but on most it should be much better. If you meet req. specs then it should work perfectly.

I too hate the new layout - what a backward step! - apart from that it's not compatible with Explorer 6 still used in many work places and government bodies (though I admit I probably shouldn't be looking for bargains during the day!) - all the pages are corrupted with IE 6.

And as I said earlier I can verify this works.

You can or could using the method above.
#36
Right, to end argument, as a person who has installed both Student upgrade and 'real' upgrade Windows disks, I can verify that this is the full version of Windows 7 being sold as an upgrade. The only difference between this, and the full Windows 7 edition, is the EULA. The serial works for a clean install *but* as it is sold as an upgrade, it is against the EULA to install this without having an earlier version of Windows. In the same way that you can buy off Software4Students without being a student, you can install this without having Windows - it's (arguably) illegal of course, but you can do it.

You're emailed the serial. You can provide the email as a reciept.

If it's an Atom processor, 32, if a modern powerful processor, 64

So you download it, burn it to a disc and install/upgrade. Is the burned disc also a repair disc in the usual way? Also is 64 any benefit in real terms or only a consideration of you are doing a clean install?
