The only thing I hate about these are you can only install on 1 computer =[ I have a desktop and a netbook what am I supposed to do for the other.
#2
Buy two.
#3
U should be able to install on all comps in ur house. They all share the same i.p
#4
No the upgrade DVD will ask for the licene key which comes in the box - this will be used for activation so can only be used on one laptop.
#5
Shame this is upgrade only, i need full version

you can get genuine activation keys on ebay.com for about $12
#7
can't see the option for 7 premium edition, would go for that as it has straight forward upgrade from my vista basic :x
#8
I bought this before Xmas not realising that it wouldn't work on Vista Ultimate or the Netbooks Vista Home Basic. S4S refused to refund me just keep telling me I can do a clean Install rather than an upgrade. Just beware which OS's this is compatible with

yeah, that could be a problem especially as my system is working great with lots of third party software installed, it could take days to get back to where i was, makes you wonder if it's worth the upgrade

This deal has been well documented on HUKD previously, I can't see any differences from the other threads, why don't people do a search before posting?

I bought this software a while back, doesn't need an existing copy of windows. Put it this way it only requires they key on the box not the one for the previous op system. I partitioned the disk and now have a dual boot vista or 7. Ideal no need to back up and you can always go back to find how something was configured previously.

I thought each installation generated a unique ID for each PC based on the HDD, mobo etc. Surely it's not just an IP address they go by?
#15
Thanks for posting this - just ordered windows 7 and also the office deal.
#16
hey, this is my first post here :) just wondering if anyone can help me...
i use leopard on a macbook and have partitioned it to have windows 7 installed as i miss alot of programs i used to use.. so would i be able to buy this and install it alright? the full is around £ 100 but ive read there is a way to use the upgrade only?

Nothing that's worth paying extra for!
#20
You can carry out a clean install using the upgrade disc very easily. I did the same with the version I bought.
#21
Or become a computing student and get this and lots of other expensive software FREE! :-D

haha, good deal none the less.
#22
i've been using windows 7 for two months and its ****! constant error messages! and it isnt compatible with anything more than a year old

just to let you know, its easy to install an upgrade as a clean install:

1. install as clean, but do not enter serial number
2. reinstall over the top, but this time "upgrade" the original unregistered version
3. enter serial number this time and it will activate, as it sees it as an upgrade.

done with a 7 pro 64bit just a few weeks ago no probs

Not to be negative guys, but bear in mind it's an academic license and if you're not a student you may as well pirate it as you're going to be just as legal that way.
#25
errrrrrr...... quick (possibly stupid) question for yas.... Can I still get this if i'm not a student?? :w00t:

That statement is so wrong I don't know where to begin.

You can get it but if you're not a student then the license is going to be invalid. It's a long shot that anyone would check of course, and it's going to be a kosher key for the MS servers, but just don't fool yourself that you're legal with it.:whistling:

i upgraded over my vista ultimate no problems at all. just do a clean install and it keeps your previous windows installation in a file called windows.old (minus the system files)

that is complete s**t. windows generates a unique sid based on your computers hardware configuration and transmits this with the serial number. what your effectively doing is pirating the software as it clearly states in the EULA that its for one PC only

Where has the RM deal gone where you could have 2 instals of Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit seems like it is not just one. :?

That's correct I believe, it definitely is not done by the IP address. You can probably getting away with upgrading your CPU, RAM, soundcard and maybe your graphics card one at a time over a period of time, but if you change your motherboard it will more than likely break the code enough to cause the OS to lock up and prevent access to it - I'm not entirely sure how it works on Win7 but that's how XP worked. MS may have made Win7 more sensitive to hardware changes since XP though.

You can use Bootcamp to run Windows on certain Macs, however make sure you do your research first. Officially Windows 7 is not yet supported according to Apple, however tech bloggers out there appear to have Win7 working on on Bootcamp already. If you aren't sure what to do, I would wait until Apple release official guidelines, documentation and software that supports Win7 on Bootcamp.

Windows 7 Compatibility Centre - PS Windows 7 is the best consumer product from MS since XP. 7 is what Vista should have been.

As stated, nothing of benefit to 99.9% of people out there. The majority of home users wouldn't even use the highlighted extra features that Professional has over Home premium. The only feature that I can see that is of obvious use to most people is WinXP Compatibly Mode. So save your money and buy Home Premium, or if you need WinXP Mode go Professional.

The 32 or 64 bit architecture refers to the memory address length that can be referenced by the processor. This also has an impact on the maximum amount of memory that can be utilised, which is 4GB for a 32 bit CPU (but in reality the maximum accessible ram is closer to 3.4 GB due to other hardware allocations).

Having a 64 bit OS doesn’t automatically make all applications faster because much of today’s software is written and optimised for a 32 bit era. You’ll need software specifically optimised for 64 bit processing to take advantage of any speed improvements. Fortunately, many games are already including such enhancements.

You may think that using a 64 bit OS for a 64 bit processer is an obvious decision, but it is not so straightforward. Introducing a new architecture will cause new compatibility and driver problems that wouldn’t exist under the old 32 bit version.

a quote from here: http://www.w7forums.com/windows-7-64-bit-vs-32-bit-t484.html

And microsofts version: The 64-bit version of Windows handles large amounts of random access memory (RAM) more effectively than a 32-bit system.

The wording on the website used to say "can be installed on 2 machines" but then Microsoft told them that it could only be used on one machine. RM sent second copies to those people who moaned and have now changed the website.

You are right, but there is no mention of this only being valid for students, it mentions academic once without definition, and then this vague line
"As an Official Microsoft Partner, Software4Students can offer this innovative new operating system software at an unbeatable cheap price discount deal to UK home users. "

So if MS busted your ass, S4S should not have sold it to you without advising of the legality

When you install it, and dont enter the serial number, use it as the trial version and when its finished, put the disk back in and click upgrade, enter serial number... you got the full version off the upgrade disk.. sorted!

Do you have to wait for the trial version to expire before you put the disk back in to upgrade and put the serial number in?

or can you put the upgrade disk in straight away after you first install?

thanks.
