Why would you buy windows8. If you don't have a touch screen device?

This sort of belief is fascinating, because it's like pure, unadulterated confirmation bias. I suspect it's because the ego boost of believing that one is privy to secret knowledge and thus cleverer than everyone else is so strong & so fundamental to a believer's self-image of being more insightful than other people. (This also explains the aggression when these beliefs are challenged.)

And what's really cool is that absolutely anything counts as evidence in favour of the theory. Video captured American Airlines Flight 11 impacting the North Tower? That's 'suspiciously convenient' No video of the hijackers of Flight 175 in the departure lounge at Boston Logan Airport? That's suspicious too! As Karl Popper pointed out, if a belief cannot be falsified, if all evidence can be explained by it, then it's unscientific and a belief system pretending to be a theory.

Observe also how even when facts conflict with reality, the true believer is not deterred. As it happens, Denver International Airport is not officially called 'New World Airport'. It's officially called 'Denver International Airport'. There are three possible responses by believers to being caught out getting the facts wrong.
(1) Ignore it. Hope that no one noticed.
(2) Change the subject. Shift the focus onto another theory or another piece of 'evidence', thus putting the burden of proof on the other person. When the next claim gets disproved, move onto another one. When the skeptic tires of this endless charade, declare victory because they 'couldn't answer your last point'. Sometimes this process is sped up with the 'wall of text' technique, where dozens of paragraphs are copied and pasted all at once.
(3) Start critically examining their own beliefs, applying Occam's Razor. Sadly, this never ever happens.

Excellent post, I would definitely compare conspiracy theorists to religious fundamentalists. . . Sadly, this is why we are wasting our time and effort, no amount of evidence will shake them from their beliefs. They think they are in a "club" of enlightened ones, hence why they call rational thinking people "sheeple".

You have to wonder why, this far into the release cycle, with 8 on the horizon, why they don't just make 7 £40-50 to everyone.

If it was a reasonable price, as opposed to about half the price of a PC, I think there'd be far less piracy of it.

Still, is a fine deal if you're a student :)

I'd much rather pay for 7 then 8. Got mine when 7 was released for £30 to education (staff and students).

Did you never come across Windows 2000 then ?

Correct order should be:
Windows 95
Windows NT4
Windows 98
Windows 2000
Windows ME
Windows XP
Windows Vista
Windows 7
Windows 8

Windows 2000 was a very stable operating system, more user friendly than NT4 but with some of the nice features in Windows 98.

Because they want to encourage uptake of Windows 8 - reducing Windows 7 would just make it harder.

Says you cant upgrade a current version of windows 7 - only do a clean install over it.... is that right ?
#13
It may be possible to clean install but illegal without a previous windows operating system.

Not illegal, breach of license agreement.

NT4 and 2000 were business versions released in parallel with the consumer versions.

XP was the first to combine consumer/business although as different variants

Wow! Thanks OP. I thought these wouldn't come back and i need to get a couple, one for a gaming build and another to install on the iMac :)

Guys, Windows 8 will be this price (provided they do a straight 1-1 dollar to pound conversion like usual). Even if you don't like Metro there are other performance improvements in Windows 8. If it annoys you that much, everyone that is installing this is more than capable of installing Start8 or something to that effect, and I'm sure at some point Microsoft will back off and create a solution.

Thinking about updating my laptop either with Windows 7 or 8, buying an ssd and some more ram, can I install this on a new hard drive or does it need to have an OS on it?
#24
Hmm, I've recently bought the Windows 7 Family pack with licence to upgrade 3 machines.

I have my current system on XP and am planning to build a new system to install W7 on. The OP says you can do a clean install, although the site details suggest you can't?

I'm just wondering what's best to do.

I have the following;

1) Old laptop running OEM XP.
2) My PC running XP - again OEM I think from an original desktop bought 7 or 8 years ago.
3) Newer (but dead mobo) laptop running Windows 7 (OEM presumably).
4) A new build I'm currently buying parts for.

I've read that you can't install an OEM version of windows on a new system as it's tied to the original mobo. However, I only learnt this a couple of weeks ago and yet the version of XP I'm running on my PC I'm using now was an original OEM version from a much older machine I had 7 or 8 years ago, and yet I've upgraded (e.g., built two new machines) twice in that time and it has installed twice on new mobos and been validated online ok both times.

So on that basis, would I be able to install the (presumably OEM version from my dead laptop) Windows 7 onto my new build from afresh i.e., no OS on the blank SSD, and then buy a copy of this student offer for £39 to upgrade my own PC which is running XP?

I could then sell my W7 family pack as I only actually need 2 installations of XP and not 3, my old laptop being TOO old to run W7 so will stay with XP.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

win 8 = poo

Both valve and blizzard have slammed it and said MS need to radically change it before they even think about developing updates and games for it

Pet hate of mine this is - I cringe every time I see people say 'brought'.

It's quite simple really;

Bought is to buy - think bought/buy.
Brought is to bring - think bRought/bRing.

Just remember the 'BR' bit.

Sad really but it does my head in!

Start 8 doesn't solve anything though. "Desktop" on 8 isn't really a desk top it's a full screen metro app, the file browser, a separate full screen app. System search... full screen app. You can't minimise anymore so multi-tasking is a nightmare. Anyone going from 7 to 8 on a standard desktop or laptop is going to have a bad time.

I've tried Windows 8 and it's awful. It's basically Windows 7 but when you press the Windows key it comes up with a screen that's only good for touch-screen devices.

well i had a bad experience with this company, i ordered windows 7 abt year ago they sent it to the wrong address and refused to refund or send agian . it wasn't even in the same city! telling me to go chase after it myself.

needles to say after many phone calls and headaches latter between them and Microsoft .

i was told by Microsoft not to purchase and rethink abt buying form them in future, as it was not the full operating system that Microsoft would have supplied hence the cheap prices.

Anyways Microsoft upgrade me to windows 7 ultimate free of charge for the hassle i had after weeks of trouble form this company.

so be careful when buying , if what Microsoft was saying is in fact true it's cheap for a reason.

happy shopping peeps

definitely wont be touching Windows 8 had a preview copy a few months ago, its horrible, Ill be sticking with windows 7 as long as possible

Concentrating on the retailer rather than the product, S4S used to add a 'transaction fee' (read as daylight robbery) after going through most of the ordering process. Is the retailer still doing this or has the dodgy practice been stopped?
#34
using windows 8 myself just now seems to be abit annoying and i don't like the live mail app not as easy to use as the one i uses normally :-( and i seem to spend more time on the desktop screen than on the metro screen .

not sure if i see myself upgrading £14.99 or not im used to windows 7 now and the pc is only uses for downloading, streaming and general browsing. so it may be a waste of time and hassle .

anyone else staying with win 7 ?

Not correct. Its quite simple. Brought is from 'Bring'. Bought is from 'Buy' !! Hope that helps.

Yep, I just got charged this @£1.95.... think that's a bit cheeky to throw that in at the last minute without any warning, should really be added to the title // price.

Have you even used Windows 8? The desktop isn't a "full screen metro app", the file explorer / system search is a standard desktop application (just like the file explorer in Windows 7, except with some enhancements) and you can minimize everything apart from Metro apps which you don't have to use.

I've used Windows 8 for the last month, the only time you *have* to see a full-screen app (without a 3rd party application like Start 8 ) is on start-up and when you launch an app (Win [+ w] + type -> enter). I've probably spent less than 10 minutes in full-screen applications while using Windows 8.
