Or enjoy a back catalog of 1000's of HD movies at a couple of quid each!

I have a PS3, but I bought an HD dvd player (cheap) just so I could collect movies in HD without having to pay the price of bluray, I know no new releases but why pay 15pounds for something that is already released exactly the same on HD at 2 quid?

whats more of a waste of cash, picking transformer up on the cheap for under a fiver in HD on a dead format, or shelling out £15 odd quid for the blu ray version :whistling:

There was only about 400 different titles.

Well 400 x 15 = 6000
400 x 2.99 = 1196

Saving = 4804

Well worth spending 30 quid on the Toshiba HD player I bought...and it upscales standard dvds better than my PS3:thumbsup:

Huh?
I was just pointing out that there arent thousands of hd dvds but hundreds.
I dont care if you are going to buy all of them and say 'wow I saved a lot by not buying them on bluray'.

Ive bought a load of cheap hd dvd's that ive yet to watch. Got about 50 and watched less than a third of them.

I can remember when Betamax VCR's were going dirt cheap, what a good deal they were , at least they had the advantage of being usefull as a recorder, i wouldnt even bother with this for a tenner.

Cant really see why, dont forget this doesnt record, and only plays a dead format. I was all for HD-DVD, but when they canned it, then its time to move on. These films are so cheap because demand is low, and will get lower. In 5 years these will all be sitting in cupoards. Spend your money on a blu ray / DVD burner (and no i dont mean blu-ray burner) and fit it internally, it will get a lot more use.

Just like Elvis, it never died, it just went back home.:p

These do have a great use.
I plugged one into my eeepc 900 and was able to load XP onto it - I would have had to buy a more expensive external one just to do this. I save stuff onto USB dongles so the record function is of no interest to me.

HD DVDs play great throught the 360 - I'll get a bluray/HDDVD combo drive for the media centre and be able to play everything.

I think most of the electronic equipment I've had for 5 years is in a cupboard somewhere and if I bought a bluray player now I'm sure newer models will supercede it soon.

This drive has a purpose for many and is cheap (glad I got mine for £20 though!)

I not knocking you, its just that wuth blu-ray, in 5 years time, you will be able to rent/buy all the latest stuff, and blu-ray will still be the HD format for the home. These are dead money, you can pick up external DVD drives / burners much more cheaply than this (i bought one on here last week). Just voicing my opinion, thats what forums are about. You pays your money, you makes your choice....

Wouldnt be so sure of that. Sony and the others have said that if next year goes badly for bluray they might pull out.

Theres always a chance, but whos competing with them? Everyone in the world is buying HD TV's, and want something to utilise them, its either this or SKY HD for joe public. Now HD-DVD is gone, there is only one way to go, and much as it pains me to say it, Sony have this format battle well and truly won. Players are dropping in price, and to the majority of buyers, the Sony name is associated with quality. We will see, but i would put money on it that the format does not fail now, its a one horse race.

Do these upscale ordinary DVDs better than the 360's own dvd player?

As usual you post your fanboy post on a 360 deal sigh here we go again -
HA HA after all those latest three so called AAA PS3 game flops in no particular order -

Little big planet = a lot of hype and little gameplay and also people are having their saves deleted cutting the gameplay in half they are not very happy = poor to medium sales worldwide

Sony PS3’s LittleBigPlanet and moderated content
http://www.product-reviews.net/2008/11/10/sony-ps3s-littlebigplanet-and-moderated-content/

Resistance 2 now released in the USA and Japan = Flop
Motostorm released everywhere = total flop

And you talk about dead formats and wasting cash ?...

I'm more concerned at game play than game sales, Little Big Planet scores higher than any exclusive 360 title. That'll do for me.

As for sales:

Early on, the discrepancy between the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 user bases was so large, multiplatform releases always sold much better for the 360. That's only logical. But as Sony has closed the gap, things are starting to change, and that is most evident when one looks at the first-week sales for Underworld. According to GamesIndustry.biz, the PS3 version comprised 51% of the total sales, while the 360 version only accounted for 34%.

Raging Fanboism aside, some times so-called 'dead formats' live on for quite some time after they leave the memory of joe public.

eg.
Minidiscs can be found in a lot radio studios.
Betamax used to be favoured by a lot of video studios.

My point is that there will always be some people who will have a use for this. Thus if not interested, move along.

As for the death of blu-ray, unlikely I think. Although I do wonder what would happen if the HD-DVD group sold off their tech on the cheap to far eastern companies...... pirates would have a field day.

Do these upscale ordinary DVDs better than the 360's own dvd player? Does it only use vga and component or does it use the HDMI port on the 360 for output?

Help please :)

Both systems have merits so I say this just for the sake of statistics: you can't make that statement using just one data point in isolation. Maybe people chose to buy GOW2 or Left 4 Dead instead (for example) You would need to compare all cross platform games sold in a period to make such a statement.

No it doesnt. Think of it as just another drive for the 360. Its still the console thats doing the playing upscaling.

HD DVD, never a hot deal!
#35
Voted cold, it's been cheaper than this with free HD-DVDS. I love my xbox 360 HD-DVD, have it hooked upto my pc so i can backup my cheapo hd-dvds and play them through cyber power dvd. I paid £25 plus 2 free dvds from gamestation, deal was posted long time ago. Yes, that was with everything this one comes with, plus 2 hd dvds, I think there have been even better deals, so cold from me.

what the hell are you taking about???

what the hell is Underworld? its not a game (that i've heard of), i know there's a movie, but why would it sell on XBOX 360?

& stop being such a fantard - both systems have their merits.

for me:

XBOX 360 = Games Console,
PS3 = Play TV + BD + MKV player

come down o £24.99
#39
now £27.98 inc p&p

I'm sure these were alot cheaper after BR won, this hd dvd player dropped to less then £20 now they've gone up is that because theres a demand for them now, maybe because theres more new 360 owners who want to experience hd technology for peanuts and a majority of hd dvd films for under a fiver,im sure this might be the reason for the increase in price:?
