Microsoft Xbox 360 HDMI Cable. £19.99 @ Currys

Was walking around the local Currys taking a browse and noticed that Currys had dropped the price of the Microsoft Xbox 360 HDMI cable by £15 to £19.99 and thought i would post it for anyone looking for one.

Shame on cold voters, this is not just a HDMI cable, it is a audio splitter as well for SPDIF Digital and RCA analogue audio.

you could buy a cheap hdmi cable and a second hand component cable and have the same effect for less than a tenner.

The only reason to buy this is for the audio/optical adapter. But DX sell a cheapo cable and adapter for about £5..

Otherwise an HDMI cable is an HDMI cable whether it's official or not. You can pick them up for about £2 if you shop around.

Microsoft are wise to this now so you can't do this with the majority of component cables anymore. They added an extra bit of plastic so that you cant fit both the component and HDMI cable in at the same time. You'll need to search for one of the earlier revision cables which were low profile.

They have always been wise to it. You have to take the cover off the component cable. Then it all fits.

I read some bad reviews on the cheap adapter from dx.

No they used to make them low profile and you could fit an HDMI cable in there at the same time with no need for modding. I used to have a couple of them. I gave the last one to a friend who bought an HDMI Arcade unit and wasn't able to get sound because he couldn't plug the composite cable in at the same time as the HDMI. Comparing the two cables you could see the older version was much thinner and the newer one was unnecessarily fatter to cover the HDMI port.

You may have been able to wedge the two cables in at the same time if you had a small enough HDMI cable, but they have always been quite thick and they have only gotten thicker since the inclusion of the hdmi port.

Ahh I'm talking about the composite cable. Just found one of the older ones sitting under my monitor. It's the same thickness as the adapter I posted a picture of above. Fits in perfectly alongside the HDMI cable. The newer composite cables mysteriously put on weight (now the same thickness as the component). A lame money making attempt by MS to stop Arcade owners from simply buying a £2 HDMI cable and using their existing composite as an adapter for the sound. No optical on the composite cables but then again not many people use that anyway.

This doesn't seem to be a bad price (for what it is). The scandal (of course) is microsoft charging £35 in the first place.......voting hot

I wouldn't! Just because this is expensive for what it is, doesn't stop it being a good deal. Its more than just a HDMI cable (i sound like the M&S advert now..).

You don't see deals for expensive brands of ice cream being voted cold because the supermarkets have a basic version.. Just because the value is scaled up a bit, doesn't change that :)

Thanks for the post.

Its a shame there are so many ill advised cold voters here without knowing the deal, in such cases the mods should intervene.

This is simply this price because microsoft locked in their designs. The reasons you need it are if you want digital our analogue outs, which the cable provides with SPDIF and RCA plugs for analogue.

THis is needed for home surround sound, as well as digital speakers or connecting stereo to your hifi.

Sure you can do some hack job if you wanted that is mentioned on the internet that looks very horrible.

That hack job will sit behind your console. So unless you are looking back there all the time, it makes a lot of sense to do it instead of buying this set.
