Thanks OP!
To those of you who are doing it, do you already need the relevant software to do the courses or do they provide it free?

Thanks!

To register for this offer, click the green check mark on the left to sign in to MVA or create an account.
Once you've got the exam voucher you'll need to register your exam via the Prometric website as they administer all Microsoft exams.
https://www.prometric.com/en-us/Pages/home.aspx
prometric where the link to that site
I've been using this in a production environment for half a year now - not sure yet if I can be bothered to take the exam though, particularly as they keep closing all the exam centres, just 60 left now in the UK and the nearest from me is 2 hours by train. But then again, it's £99 otherwise.....
Good deal. I'm doing the course via MVA and running server 2012 evaluation version as a dual boot on my laptop.

"The plain simple fact of the matter is only small percentage of those people passing certifications will will actually get a job in their chosen certification field."

Not at all. Only those people who are foolish enough to assume that certification=training=job. Most people get the certifications whilst already WORKING in the chosen certification field.

Fair point - I'll correct that.

The plain simple fact of the matter is only small percentage of those people passing certifications who don't already work in the chosen certification field will will actually get a job on the basis on passing the certification alone.

Cisco have pushed the CCNA into just about every college out there and encourage students to take the CCNA exam irrespective of whether they are working in the industry or not. They will never stop you taking the exam due to lack of experience. The Cisco NetAcademy website is full of 'success stories' with regard CCNA graduates some of whom do not have any previous exposure to IT. So what assumption are prospective students who don't know any better meant to make from this ? That if they pay £2000 for a CCNA course they may get a job perhaps ? I would not call that a foolish assumption - a naive assumption maybe but not a foolish one as a foolish person knows better but still persists in his folly where as a naive person does not know any better at that stage in their lives. Are these people foolish for trying to better themselves ?

That's mainly because getting the job includes:
- The background knowledge
- The right attitude
- A bit of luck

A more realistic comparison is the proportion of people getting their first networking job who have a CCNA (for example) compared with those who don't. I would imagine the proportion is very high. A CCNA doesn't guarantee you a networking job at all, it just opens the door a bit from the almost closed door it was before. That doesn't mean its not a valuable certification!

Incidentally, why did you recently interview a person with a Windows 2000 MCSE? Support for that platform was stopped in 2010.

Because experience counts for a whole lot more than any certification.

I did the course last year; it was very good.

I don't think Hyper-V is in the same arena as VMware, but it will get some take-on for smaller installations.

The course itself is Hyper-V and System Center, and it's the second part of that which is the elephant in the room.

Hyper-V can be run standalone, and it's fine as far as it goes (it's something along the lines of VMware Player), but not quite enterprise-grade (eg. you can't clone a VM).

To manage it for the Enterprise you need System Center, and System Center requires a multi-computer Windows Server 2012 installation (4 decent spec'd servers?), including a Windows AD setup, two for SC, and one for Hyper-V.

So that's a stumbling block if you're thinking this is an easy bish-bosh-bash done it course and exam. Also, they say that the exam places are limited, so having the entitlement voucher from the course does not guarantee that you can actually do the exam for free.

As far as Hyper-V goes, it's got two pluses in its favour: (i) it's included in Windows 8 Pro, (ii) if you implement it on a Windows Server host, the host's Windows licence covers all of the guest VMs too.

Myself, I'm glad I did the course, but it's good to be aware of the above.

Hang on a min.. are you telling me that if I have windows 2012 Server and I created a virtual machine on hyperV for another 2012... I only need 1 license?
You get the voucher on completion of the course.
So how do you get the voucher for the exam? Do you need to sign up for the Virtual academy, add the course then get the voucher?
Yep - well done!

What's with all the boring pretend big shots making out like they know about the industry. Shut the hell up and just discuss the actual deal, which is good.

Well said. I've been thirty years in IT and worked with many people who shoulda been 'certified'. Hot here
centaurandrew
I did, i said it was good and voted hot. Your post above mine added absolutely no value to the thread,

So my comment on the product at hand, giving my viewpoint because of my experience in the industry is irrelevant but your post telling people not to comment is valuable? Go figure.

That's kind of the idea of a forum - people post their views, opinions and possible insights on a topic, in this case MS certifications. If you have a differing opinions, then tell us otherwise vote and move along.
