I don't own this box but a similar model, and it is far better than my firestick, firestick is so laggy and crashes far more often, also the fire stick is a lot more limited to which builds you can use because of its smaller hard drive space, I would go for the box everyday of the week

They can and do, but realistically not around the £25 pricepoint.

I own this, works great for the price, need to google bits about kodi, add couple of add-ons and here you go. 4k works with LAN connection, over WiFi you'll struggle, recommend also buying a mini keyboard with this, very helpful...

can you recommend a box with better wifi?
#14
wifi will always be questionable, no matter what any manufacturer says, the hubs are usually to blame so unless you have your own network or have fantastic WiFi already...
#15
Gone for this, cheapest I've seen for the spec and my first order from Gearbest... Hope everything goes smoothly!
As well as KODI, etc, I'm hoping I can get VLC up and running on this to play DVD backup rips and HD files from hard drives.

You don't need to use VLC, unless of course you prefer to. Kodi will play the files quite happily.

Kodi has support for that, why would you need VLC?

The wi-fi in this box has known issues and is appalling compared to other boxes.

Good stuff, I'll need to look into that, just that I've been using VLC on a PC for years so used to it. I take it Kodi is a decent quality media player?

I didn't realise Kodi was a fully fledged media player, I've been using VLC for years and heard it can play DVD files (I want to backup up all my physical DVD discs to a hard drive and eventually get rid of the discs).

But now you've got me wondering about the wireless issues. I could easily use it in a wired configuration, I'd probably set it up like that anyway, any known issues with its wired performance or should I cancel my order... If I can?

was not aware of the specific issue with that one, mine is wired, I still think that most boxes do struggle with Wi-fi due to the source of the WiFi itself... people should be aware of that, this is a problem for most people across all devices...

So is this worth going for or not?
Currently use a firestick, interface is laggy and crap but when its working its fine.

Only concered about the wifi really, but people say the same about firesticks and wifi on that works fine for me

Wired performance is fine, wireless just isn't the best. I would imagine a wireless adapter could possibly solve that issue.

Noticed that too, I've never really shopped with them before so just selected what looked like the best delivery option, which was UK priority. Paid by credit card so if there's any issues, I'm covered.

Check out Minix Neo, particular x8. But that will set you back around £100. Otherwise check out lighter models like the x6

Good stuff, I'll give it a whirl with my wireless and see what it's like, nevertheless I'll have it wired up to the network too. Hope I've got a spare port on my switch!

Yeah, it's very good. Used to be XBMC, Xbox media centre, which evolved to Kodi.

I have it running wired as I'd heard about the wifi issues. Haven't even tested wifi on it. Runs far better than a firestick. You can also access the Google Play store to install additional apps.

And that's why I've paid on credit card. That does cover these sort of things, doesn't it?
(turns out that credit card protection is only for purchases between £100 and £30,000... :()

Don't put Kodi themes/skins on firesticks - just put the Kodi add-ons themselves. Speed will not be an issue then.

manuelw

It says "100 LAN" so yes.

Cheers, I've been looking around for an Android box but looking more into the specs rather than what I can run on it. As long as I can plug in a hard drive, play files and it lasts a few years, that's all I want. Streaming, 4K, etc is a bonus.
#39
Just bought a 4K tv. Tempting
#40
Pardon my ignorance. Is this a MiniPC set up to stream video and generally work as a media box?

I can understand it will stream video locally, say over the LAN to your NAS, or from the SD card. Does it stream TV from internet sites? Is that what these devices are frequently used for.

Bloody cheap.

manuelw
does this have ethernet connection port?

Yes. RJ45 is listed in the spec.
