im still waiting for my free energy monitor thing from british gas. http://www.hotukdeals.com/item/439327/free-energy-saving-products-worth-5/ not voting yet.
the price is £39.99 not £30. £39.99 is sold directly from amazon, The amazon resellers sells for £30 + £5.35, the rules say you cannot submmit amazon market place items.

1. The post was for an item on eBay or Amazon Marketplace, these are not allowed on HotUKDeals (or any other auction/marketplace site where someone could list their item for sale and then list it as a 'Hot Deal' on this site). We also do not permit eBay based businesses."

I got my free one from British Gas on Monday. I also got the power saver 'bar' with it.

These monitors are a complete waste of money.

If you turn things off when you don't need them then, funnily enough, your consumption will go down! You don't need a monitor to tell you that. Anyone who cares enough about wasted energy to buy one of these will already turn things off.

If you have people in your household who are energy hogs, always leaving everything on, then they won't pay the blindest bit of notice to the monitor anyway.

I bought a similar one a couple of years ago for about £30 and it does what it is supposed to, display electricity consumption, but it has had no effect on overall energy wastage in the household. The batteries in our sender unit ran out a couple of weeks ago and my wife only just noticed even though she "looks at it all the time" I think I will put it on Ebay and recoup some of the cost.

When our free one arrived several weeks ago now I amused that the display monitor had to be plugged into the mains - unlike the Owl one I had previously bought which is battery powered.

I got an E.ON one off ebay. It showed me that my electricity usage was high despite turning virtually everything off. Turned out my pump was running permanantly on my boiler, even when the water was cold. A quick fix and all is well.

It is also amazing how much extra savings can be made, over 30watts on switching my sky+ box off at the wall (I don't record anything during the day as it is all tosh).

Your sarcastic post is in my opinion unhelpful and in my case (so perhaps others), very wrong. There is no doubt mine has saved me a significant amount of money and easily paid for itself.

You needed a monitor to tell you that??:?

Yes. Located in the garage of a house I had recently moved into and running near silently it wasn't obvious at all.
Your point is?

Why is my post sarcastic? I can see no sarcasm in it at all. As to it being unhelpful, well maybe it is for you, but I think it important that people know that for many, maybe most, people the meters are completely useless. It's just good sense to turn things off when you aren't using them. As is modifying your daily life to minimise energy usage, for example doing tasks in daylight or planning your washing around the weather forecasts to avoid tumble-drying. You don't need a meter to tell you that.

I bought a meter because my wife said she didn't understand how much different devices cost to use but unfortunately she has never really bothered to equate what it says with what devices are on. In the end I have got so sick of reminding her about turning appliances and lights off that I don't bother any more and consequently our electricity bills are now actually higher.

The only thing the meter has shown me, that I couldn't have known otherwise, is that our smoke detector system uses a surprising amount of electricity, but obviously switching that off wouldn't be a very good idea.

All in all I wish I hadn't wasted £30 on one. It's just another piece of electronic gizmo tat cluttering up my house.

Recently I came to know that there is a website named AmazingWatcher.Com which is a free website that will “watch” items for you on Amazon and let you know when amazon has them in stock at regular retail price. It got so awesome!
Good luck everybody!
