Better... if you liked the first one. People complain that the open world detracts from the design of the levels however the first one wasn't much better, once you memorised the levels you could easily zip through them which is exactly the same in Catalyst. People tend to forget the later half of the original was filled with inside levels that weren't straight linear paths.

Yeah it can be turned off, I think there's three options:

1. On = the red guide is always showing you where to go
2. Partial = This is the same as the first game where objects are highlighted red but there is no red "spirit"
3. Off = No highlighted objects or guide
