Hi.

Hardly any details - sorry everybody. Just caught the tail end of this announcement as I was leaving the store, and my dinner is more important than trying to track this particular bargain down.

The gist of it is................

Mobile phone for £5, from Friday 25th April 2008, instore.

Didn't get what type of phone or what provider it is through, but it must be a bargain at a fiver eh?

And according to the Daily Mail (Thanks to Bigjeremy for pointing this out) there'll be a Nokia model amongst the four phones on sale.

There'll be 50,000 available though Asda expect them to sell out quickly.

The models available are Nokia 1112, Sagem My212x, Sagem My220x and Sagem My150x.

probably an F3 ha ha

provider is probably asda mobile.
#2
They were doing Sagems last week for £9.
#3
Not sure it'll be a Sagem.

There was a member of staff on the Tannoy saying they had Sagems for £9, but then just a few minutes later this was more of an "Asda FM" type announcement, rather than just a staff using a microphone, so I reckon it'll be all stores.

According to the Daily Mail Asda has announced it will sell a selection of mobile phones in its store for just £5 from tomorrow.

The supermarket chain revealed the pay as you go range will be the cheapest in Britain.

Over 50,000 handsets will be available at stores across the UK from 9am but Asda has said they are likely to sell out quickly.

There will be four different handsets in the range, including a Nokia phone, according to the retailer.

thanks for the headsup... heat added

50,000 phones throughout the uk is not really a big deal. they are obviously just clearing out old stocks. so i wouldnt think there are going to be any spectacular deals.
Nokia will probably be nokia snake, has been on sale for £ 10 anyway.

Good if you just need a cheap phone, but you are still only gonna save a few quid on normal price
#11
£50 top-up required or what ??? ;) Heat added.Thx

bit premature to be adding heat to a non existent deal but your choice
#20

#21
Nice one! Heat and Rep added!! Thanks.

I think I'll pop along to mine for a look, I'm off to Thailand on Saturday and need a phone to use out there (with a Thai sim card of course) so if I can get a cheap phone I can unlock for pennies then.... Bully!
#24
As far as I know - none unlock easily without specialist kit.

It might also be worth mentioning my most reliable and longest lasting phone still keeping a weeks charge and bough for a holiday in 2004 is a Sagem MY-X7.

Here are the phones up for grabs...

***Hows this for a cunning plan***

Buy these, then send them back for recycling at Tesco for clubcard points. Think its £12 in deal coupons (or £20 if you can get the old recycling envelopes).
#26
Nokia 1110 or 1112?
#27
I need a new Nokia charger so may as well pick one of these up. Battery might even be useable too.

Hot as long as no mandatory top up required!
#28
hmm, shall pop to asda in the morning then, as i could do with a cheap Festival Phone :)
#29
The 1112 uses the older style charger (the fat one) so unless you have an old phone it won't work
#30
Hot Hot Hot!!

Quote from the Mail website:
Unlike other retailers, which offer low-cost handsets only if you buy over £10 worth of credit, customers purchasing the Asda handsets do not have to sign up to any deal or spend a minimum sum on credit...

...A spokeswoman said: "There are no hidden charges or extra costs. You don't have to buy a set amount of credit.

Meh, none of these phones can be unlocked for free or accept AT commands, so are useless for interfacing with micro-controllers
#32
I successfully unlocked a Nokia 1116 on the asda network using a code i paid £5 for on Ebay
#33
Whatever the model these deals are damn fine heat added :-D

Is that something the average consumer wants to do with a £5 phone?

If it's the nokia 1110 then it can be unlocked, if it's 1112 then i can't at current for free.

Hi All
From the Asda website below.

IT'S PHONES FOR YOU FOR A FIVER

ASDA launches Britain's lowest priced mobile phone

ASDA today (25th April) launches Britain's lowest priced Pay As You Go mobile phone ever when it goes on sale at £5 with no strings attached. So straightforward is the deal that you could walk into an ASDA store, buy the phone and walk out. Over 50,000 handsets, which are amazingly cheaper than a kids' toy mobile, will be available at ASDA stores across the UK from 9am but the supermarket warns these are likely to sell out quickly.

The retailer is even giving customers a choice of four phones to choose from including a Nokia. ASDA is well known for bringing customers iconic items at unbelievable prices and has previously sold DVD players for £9, suits for £15 and copies of the latest Harry Potter book for just £5. Peter Pritchard, ASDA Trading Director, says: ‘We think this latest offer is likely to get the best reception yet! When it came to deciding to sell the latest high quality phones at incredibly low prices to our customers, it wasn’t a tough call to make.

Shoppers are increasingly turning to Pay As you Go as a way of controlling their spending on mobile phones and this offer is exactly what is needed to help them do this.’ Buying technology can be confusing when shoppers are bombarded with half price contracts and free gifts. Many cheap PAYG offers from other mobile phone retailers tie customers into paying for up to £50 worth of credit but these ASDA handsets from Nokia and Sagem cost less than the price of a toy mobile with no hidden extras.

ASDA is the fastest growing mobile phone seller in the market * and its increasing scale means it is able to work with more and more suppliers to offer this deal across the networks. The retailer works with all the major networks to get customers straightforward value deals across PAYG and contracts. Phones will be available in all ASDA stores while stocks last.

Worth thinking about the CPW £20 trade in if your going to get a decent phone... makes you £15 off!
#37
It's a good deal for those that like just a cheap basic phone but not my cuppa tea still hot tho

Rip off Britain strikes again !
Can people please stop me wasting my bandwidth looking at deals for anything less than an
N95 for a fiver.
:x:roll:

No asda store within 10 miles of me so its completely irrelevant....but these will sell out almost immediately. it will almost certainly be 1 per customer. Most of them will probably end up being shipped abroad were handsets are much more expensive without subsidies....

Yes I was thinking this. I have the 500 point envelopes, so £25 in deals each, if the points come through.
