The greatest Chinese import to the UK

No arguments here... great (if distant) memories. Strange rating though. Rated: Suitable for 12 years and over - WTF? I'm sure I watched this preschool.

Greatest Japanese import ;)

By the way, massive box set for only 13 discs. These days they cram a 6 disc series into a normal dvd sized box.

Stupid mistake I know, have changed it now (apologies)

Same here, although preferred it with the original Pigsy in it.

I was disturbingly attracted to the boy priest back then. Came as a relief that it was a woman playing him. Shame she passed away some time ago. But if you want better news look up what happened to Sandy.

I loved this series as a child, however memories are better than reality. I watched it a few years ago and well it was better left as a memory.

The disco in the sea monsters stomach still makes me laugh, and Monkey doing the robot, genius. Still love it.

I watched the first series again recently (2nd series is a bit pap) and I can see why certain bits are a 12-cert. Aside from Monkey killing stuff left and right Pigsy pretty much tries to rape someone in at least the first six episodes.

Water margin also on sale

The 2nd best Japanese import!
#15
Yeah the water margin is a very close 2nd, and the theme tune was one of the best ever, Lin Chun was a cool dude.
#16
This is fantastic. I would love to own it. But I can't justify spending £35 on it.

Water margin was another great import!

Apparentlty WB are thinking about remaking Rentaghost (in a Beetlejuice style), guess who's gonna play Timothy Claypole.....

...plus the extra £28.57 (at present) to buy the dubbed versions of the "missing 13 episodes" (those not acquired by the BBC for transmission originally, but later gained & dubbed by the same actors involved with the other episodes):

Of course, you could just buy the "Enslaved: Odyssey to the West" video game & try to reproduce the voices of Monkey, Trip(itaka), & Pigsy yourself...

Good casting (or, rather, good look-a-like for Michael Staniforth); but the idea sounds terrible.

However, this page seems to suggest he is going to be Fred Mumford:

http://www.deadline.com/2010/12/russell-brand-haunts-rentaghost-remake/

EXCLUSIVE: Warner Bros has acquired the rights to the British comedy show RentaGhost and will develop it into a Beetlejuice-style afterlife feature comedy vehicle for Russell Brand. He'll play Fred Mumford, a recently deceased guy determined to be more productive as a corpse than he was during his life as a slacker. He attempts to set himself up in a business with a couple of other ghouls, starting a temp agency for the dead. Mumford and cohorts rent out ghouls and ghosts to the living, until things go awry. The original series, created by Bob Block, ran on BBC1 from 1976-1984. Langley Park's Kevin McCormick will produce with BermanBraun's Gail Berman and Lloyd Braun. Brand will be executive producer. They're going right out to writers. BB's Andrew Mittman brought in the project.

I'd like to see Martin Freeman as Fred Mumford.

I bought this set from a certain crappy auction site a few years ago and loved watching Monkey again. Series 2 is definitely not as good as series 1 and the original Pigsy is by far the better actor.

Ah, you swine you!!!!

Fanpages on the amazon link for this set it states includes all previously undubbed episodes

So I'd have thought you don't need to buy any more DVDs?

I read that to mean it contains the "undubbed" episodes; the original episodes with the oriental actors' voices (not those dubbed by the English actors for the BBC).

Reading the first review on the Amazon (UK) product page seems to indicate this is the case.

I liked the closing song better when I was little (now intro is miles better)

Just a thought which came first? Son Goku with his cloud or Monkey with his heavenly cloud?

For the uninformed son Goku is from dragonballz just wondering who'd thought of the amazing idea of riding on a cloud 1st

Mad, we reviewed that on our podcast this week. My co-hosts had never seen it. Get it bought!
#37
Monkey's fairly entertaining; I've had this on price watch for ages but will wait for it to drop below £20 before buying. The Water Margin is better if you're watching episodes back-to-back as it has story arcs whereas Monkey gets more repetitive.
#38
seeing as monkey is based on journey to the west which was published in 1590, i'm gonna say monkey got there before dragonball.
Journey to the west is part of the chinese mythology/religion but is far more exciting than the west's bible.
Goku is likely based on monkey hence goku's monkey tail and mischevious attitude.

You are correct, the episodes on these dvds are the japanese versions with english subtitles only. Kind of ruins the experience of Monkey as the dubbed voices are part of the overall entertainment :)

I struggled to cope with a new actor playing Pigsy, nevermind having them all talk in their original accents lol

Weird fact is that Manuel from Fawlty Towers (Andrew Sachs) dubs the voice of the horse in series 2?

When hearing him, you really think 'who is that voice!?'
