Not been about for a bit... I do know of paganism. Anyway, clarification for those among you who appear to have been trapped in the loop of cheap carbohydrate consumption, Halloween, as is today, is just another import from the USA. 50 years ago (when I was a kid and my allowance for sweets was one ounce a month) there were no door-door sweet scavengers. What spare time there was between tea, homework and bed was spent readying the creation of an effigy of Fawkes, peddling him for pennies and gathering wood and other combustables. The Halloween charade indulged in now has nothing to do with Samhain or all saints day. It's a concoction devised by the sugar moguls to get your kids hooked on sugar. You may just as well allow your offspring to take cigarettes as their "treats" from strangers. The trick of Halloween today is having the savvy to reject a poison now euphemistically termed a "treat".

Halloween is an American import... We are not American's. Keep your children away from these poisonous escapades where the goal is to collect as much sugar as possible. Type 2 Diabetes is not funny and it could ruin the entire life of your child. Act responsibly, just keep them indoors.

It's Irish, not American.

Just a little reminder from someone who lives in Dorset and just been dragged to hell and back for the last month. The following is NOTHING to do with Monkey World I cannot stress this enough, but it is to do with all animal areas, especially here in Dorset.
There have been several outbreaks of E Coli O55 here in Dorset over the past few years, the most recent just over a month ago.
This particular E Coli strain is ONLY in Dorset, and my poor little boy has only just come out of hospital after literally fighting for his life, he nearly died twice in 1 week. Around 1 in 10 who contract this strain of E Coli or O157:H7 can get HUS 'Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome' my 18 month old was that 1 in 10.
Basically, if you get HUS it WILL try to kill you - end of. I won't go into all the painful details though I will shorten it (dialysis, blood transfusions, respirators, brain swelling and acute kidney failure/possible long term) but I will say WASH WASH WASH & WASH your children's hands (and yours) when around animals ANYWHERE, and when you think they are clean, wash them 1 more time - fancy gel's will NOT stop this, but simple soap and water will.
We may never find out where exactly he contracted it, but it certainly was NOT at Monkey World.
Public Health England think it may be being spread by migrating birds, but they really have no idea, or proof.
I really don't want to scare anyone off coming here to Dorset and certainly not to Monkey World, it is a fantastic place, but I felt I needed to speak out. Just keep those mucky paws clean and you will have no worries at all.

Sorry for the scary stuff, but you would never think something like this could happen to you, and then out of the blue it does.

If you would like to know more just google E Coli O55, or visit HUS
Oh, and finally I'd just like to say if it weren't for Southampton Hospital's PICU unit, my son almost certainly would not be here now - Angels sent from above isn't high enough praise, and if you have a few spare pennies you could always donate them Here. Really, I was shocked at the percentage of equipment that was donated, a massive amount. I found myself wondering if it weren't for donated stuff, would half of it even be there.......probably not.

Thanks for sharing, and sorry you and your son had to go that.

As a mother myself I am sure everyone reading your post would wholeheartedly agree with you and want to take the precautions. Thank you for sharing the information and hugs to you and your little one x
Thankyou for that, yes he is getting better now, still has the E Coli though, may take up to 3 months to get rid of that - doesn't really affect him though, apart from the obvious watery poo! (sorry lol)

So... who can I expect to see roaming around tomorrow...?
I agree an open day would be better, I'd love to come along and give a donation while keeping the cost down of not having to pay full entry fee but my five year is petrified of masks etc so this would be a no go for me

Fantastic Deal. We have been for the last 3 years I think? My middle child's birthday is Halloween, He will be 5 this year and he loves going there on his birthday. It is a great day out and my kids LOVE dressing up, Many a time I have been accompanied by Cinderalla in fairy wings or a dinosaur to the supermarket!

Ah bless mine used to love dressing up as well :) I made endless costumes over the years for my daughter, and one of my sons when he was little wanted to be a giraffe on his birthday so made him a costume (he didn't have a long neck though)! brings backs so many happy memories :) hope your little one has a fantastic fifth birthday and has lots of fun there!

nice looking deal , shame about the location of the place , Dorset , may need a boat to get there.
They successfully fought Mary Chipperfield of Chipperfields Circus through the courts to rescue a chimpanzee that she was mistreating and have her convicted. http://www.monkeyworld.org/news/7/circus-trainer-guilty-of-cruelty-to-chimpanzee.htm . Well worth supporting this charity who do brilliant work, and a great day out too.
apparently bananas are restricted now due to the natural sugar levels
when given in excessive amounts it was causing behavioural issues within the families
so now nore variety of fruit and veg is given to the chimps
not sure if its at monkey world but someone explained it last week that another place was doing this

I have never been so think I shall take my tribe of monkeys next week if its nice

WHERE IS MONKEY WORLD
Only one that thought of a different money island?
Bit of a trek for me from Leicester. ;)

Been there before though it is really worth going if you can. Even if you can't go on this date for free the prices are reasonable and they do a great job there re-homing apes and monkeys. :)

http://www.monkeyworld.org/monkey-world-centre-information/where-to-find-us.htm Monkey world is in Bovington, Dorset. Opposite Bovington Tank Museum. Not very far from Poole. Fantastic place. been twice. Lots to see and lots of walking!

i live in warrington and i was wondering where is monkey world because it sounds really good??:p

Monkey World is in Dorset on the south coast. Not too far from Bournemouth and it's opposite a tank museum, so when you've finished looking at the monkeys, you can go look at tanks!
Will the monkeys be dressing up for the occasion?

In my opinion since it is Halloween, you can dress in anything you like - as any animal, or scary creature, but also like nurse, pumpkin, tomato, witch, milkmen etc...It didn`t say you have to be dressed like a monkey?

Or am I missing something? LOL
Yeh seems weird, wouldn't it scare the monkeys? I know my cat would run a mile if it saw me in a ghost costume or something, pretty dumb idea I think.
Hope a load of people in monkey-dress doesn't traumatise the residents too much!! Maybe they should get the monkeys to reciprocate by dressing as humans...?

Might all go pear shaped I guess... :p
