Preventing waste by encouraging reuse

Carrier bags
Reducing the environmental impact of carrier bag use is one element of our policy to prevent waste through a sustainable waste management strategy that focuses on optimisation, reduction, reuse and recycling. To date, we have achieved 13% of our 25% target, cutting out 110 million bags.

We aim to encourage customers to reuse our standard carrier bag, which is designed to offer exceptional performance and be suitable for reuse, with a minimum of resources used in its production. Strength testing shows it to be very durable and therefore reusable. To further encourage reuse and recycling, the bags now feature the Recycle Now logo with the message: Reusing bags helps protect the environment. Thats why weve made this one strong enough for you to use again. Please do!

When our carrier bags reach the end of their useful lives, they can be recycled through units available in all of our stores, situated in prominent positions in main entrance areas.

This year, we reduced the plastic content of our standard sized carrier bags by two microns of thickness per bag, and are now 44% towards achieving our target to increase the recycled content of our standard plastic carrier bags to 25% by the end of 2008 and by 50% by 2010. To reduce the use of plastic further, this year we also launched our new smaller sized bags which are available for convenience shopping.

It appalls me when shops give these bags away as if they were the thin ones. Most people will throw them straight in the bin.
The only way to stop people wasting bags is to charge a lot for them. If they were 30 or 50 pence each, people would start remembering to take a carrier with them, or chuck everything back in the trolley and throw it in the boot of their car.

In france we have a 'bag for life' total costs €0.30 which will be replaced and the old one recycled ENDLESSLY..... They are really hard wearing too ( use them for carting garden waste and empty wine bottles about) :), No flimsy free ones handed out

This seems to be hopping on the green bandwagon, Oh sorry horse cart

PS: was highlighted in a buy 24 pack of Stella get free bag post 3 days ago, although bag wasn't mentioned ;-) http://www.hotukdeals.com/item/186879/24x440ml-stella-10-47-save-10/

asda dont have any flimsy bags anymore, you have to buy them at 5p each or more for a stronger one.the 5p one if they get damaged in anyway they will replace it free of charge.just remember to take them with you next time or you end up buying more.

Whilst America & China Continue to Churn out Massive Polution without much care, it's Ironic that we are here worring over carrier bags!

Whilst America & China Continue Churn out Massive Polution without worry, it is ironic that we are worrying about carrier bags.:?

I agree,as if we don't have more important things to think about.Whatever we do will be a drop in the ocean compared to what the other major polluting countries need to do.

It is the disposal of the bags in our own country that is the problem!!! We can't blame China or America for that one, we have a duty to try and look after our own.

Carrier bags are a very small part of what needs to be done to save the planet. It’s just a distraction by the government, to put all the emphasis on the consumer. I for one am fed up with this, and to be totally honest I am beginning to care less & less:w00t:

It's because of people like you that the shops need to charge £1.00/bag. You are too stupid to do anything without being forced.

I've started to recycle my carrier bags, will it have an effect on global warming NO.
i;ve started to switch my TV off, will it have an effect on global warming NO.
IN fact the entire UK can go back to the stone age and it will not have an effect on Global warming.

Until China,India,USA and Russia tackle global warming there is nothing i can do about it.Someone in China is probably having a laugh at this while sat next to his new coal fired power station. Global Warming is happening and i cannot change it and am sick of been told i can by doing the menial things. It is just an excuse to raise more TAX.

It's because of rude people like you:x, that lots of people don't want to change. It’s no good beating them with a stick; they need gentle persuasion and encouragement

Reusable bags should be free in all supermarkets. As far as I'm concerned the supermarkets are to blame for going for the cheaper option not the consumer. They make enough money.

Please don't use that bag that you don't really need. Please don't buy things made cheaply in China /India, then try to blame them for the resulting emissions. Thanks ever so much.
