Notorious and influential former Smiths frontman Steven Patrick Morrissey's solo material has always divided opinion, but his Greatest Hits nonetheless compiles the highlights from his extensive back catalogue. Cuts from the acclaimed debut 'Viva Hate' all the way up to 2006's 'Ringleader Of The Tormentors' are present, with hit singles such as 'First Of The Gang To Die' and the classic 'Every Day Is Like Sunday' included. This release also contains two new songs, of which one ('That's How People Grow Up') sees release as a single.

More a cross-section of parts of his solo career from his first two decades up to 2008 than a strict GREATEST HITS, this Decca collection is more of a testament to the quality of Morrissey's early-2000s resurgence. GH opens with "First of the Gang to Die," a mobster ballad from 2003 that provides insight into some of the depression-rocker's unlikeliest fanbases. From there, the compilation switches from later hits like the anthem "Irish Blood, English Heart" and the defiantly forlorn "You Have Killed Me" to undeniable classics from the 1980s, such as "Suedehead," "Every Day is Like Sunday," and the lone '90s representative, "The More You Ignore Me, the Closer I Get."

The 1987 break-up of the Smiths saddened legions of fans, but it led to a fruitful solo career for lead singer and lyricist Morrissey. The Smiths were very much a singles band, and VIVA HATE, Morrissey's first record, continued in the Smiths vein with the gloriously sad singles "Suedehead" and "Every Day Is Like Sunday". As Morrissey soldiered on, he began to develop more of an individual style, although he never lost the elements of high drama and challenging pop that came together in the Smiths.
