Sounds too good to be true - I'm guessing the catch is if something is found not to pass, it will cost more than other places to have it fixed there.....sorry to be sceptical but you do wonder how and why they can charge £15 when everywhere else charges £40+?
#2
Says they only do MOTs
They could of course refer people to another place if work needs doing...
#3
These guys don't do repairs, only MOTs.

So it isn't in their interest to find problems because t the moment they offer free retests as well.
#4
great price, but shame it's not in Sheffield. The chepest I could find are Nationwide Autocentre and Citroen garage doing deals for £27 at the moment

I disagree, put my 4 year old Megane through last year and it passed first time :)

Someone is always gonna complain about places, same for anywhere you go :?

I don’t understand the maths with this. How can they afford to pay for the equipment and the man hours to do a thorough test and still make any money? It takes a while to do an MOT properly and I just worry they may be cutting corners somewhere and putting you life at risk by missing things. I would pay a bit more at a reputable local garage.

not voting hot or cold.

Surely you must be joking :-). MOT is a money spinner and not a test whether your car is safe to drive. C'mon, that is your responsibility not the Government's.

I'd happily pay £15 instead of £45 for the MOT Cerificate, unless there is some other scam going on.

used these guys a couple of times. Very professional and together. Can't recommend them enough. Even gave me free windscreen wipers as mine were no good anymore.

There are a lot of people out there who drive but don’t have a clue about the mechanics of a car. For some people an MOT is the only time in a year when the bonnet of their car is opened! An MOT is not just about finding problems that are already there its also about (hopefully) spotting problems before they develop.

I just don’t understand how they can do a good job for this kind of money.
#13
we have had this email as we have used them this year, they were great, they found that a front cross member in our car was severely corroded and in their opinion was dangerous to drive but had to pass the car through the MOT as it wasnt in the MOT criteria.

As the name suggest, they dont do any repairs, dont tell you to go to a particular garage and do offer free retests within 10 days ( I think )

We paid £21 through their online booking service and will be booking them up again

Hot!

+1

They are the biggest rip off merchants I know. I took my car to them a week after I bought it and they insisted I needed new rear brake discs (for £200!) - this was 18 months ago. They are still on now and have been told by Renault and other places thay they are fine. I will never go to them for anything as much as an opinion again. Cowboys.

Just to add - this is why you need to be wary of these "offers" - saving 20 quid on an MOT might sound great but when they then charge you for work that doesn't need doing you have to question if it is so worthwhile. However this particular deal sounds good from what people have said, shame there are none in the north.

Its intersteting to get inside info. What do Nationwide say to their testers to make them fail cars that should pass?
#16
there are many ways a car can fail that aren't obvious. for instance, using more pressure than prescribed by vosa to 'tap' the sills and chassis legs.

just an example/.

for info, i am not a nationwide employee

Your car passed its MOT and therefore Derby_Lad's comments are to be disagreed with. Perhaps your car has been well maintained and therefore you deserve the credit - not those that passed it. Also, they can't fail every car. That would look too dodgy!

I used these guys (Burgess Hill branch) a few months ago and was very impressed, failed first time due to tyres and handbrake strength. Ordered new tyres online and they told me how to sort out the handbrake myself! Came back within ten days and got my free retest. :)

This is for Nationwide copied from a recent post of mine:

I took one of ours there the other day (knowing car would be good to pass) they got me on the indicator bulbs, saying the orange glass was very pale....looked very orange to me.

Had to have the bulbs done £4 each!+ labour and they charge £60 per hour labour as they were being pillicks saying they would they would charge me a retest fee if I fitted the bulbs myself.

Lets say Never Again

I had an MOT at a local garage (nothing to do with any of the companies previously mentioned in this thread.) They failed my car on leaking power steering system and quoted just over £500 to repair - complete new steering rack etc. etc. etc. required.

I appealed and VOSA bloke very helpful but confirmed that the failure was correct because the power steering was indeed leaking. However he also pointed out that only a small pipe needed tightening up a few minutes work. He not allowed to get involved beyond appeal but suggested to me he was disgusted with garage and "had a word" with them, hint hint I should ask for another quote and they would make it right this time. No charge by VOSA for the appeal which was nice of them.

I thought sod them however and on a mate's recommendation I got it fixed properly by someone else for a few quid.
#21
This really works... I had my MOT done with them in January for £10 ....failed first. Retest was for free :)

They really do just MOT for you but even replace a bulp or wiper for free to make you pass.... Great Service!
#22
I used justMOTs in Brighton, my car failed unexpectedly so challenged the tester but he seemed to have no idea what he was talking about so took my car straight to Nationwide using Nectar points and passed with flying colours. I will not go to these under qualified centres again.
#23
Well after mixed reviews on this post i will have to try them out now!

I have just booked the school run car in with them. £15 is a good price if the car passes and the garage do what there meant too!

I'll report back in January!! :whistling:
#24
I used their Crawley Branch last month , No hassles .I reccomend them.

Car passed 1st time with a advisory note for my brakes near wear limit.

Would use them again

The obvious answer to that is not all MOTs they do are at this price.

There is no way Tesco can make a profit on lots of the deals they do. This is all about getting people though the door and hoping they come back.

Also, remember that the tools, equipment and man hours are already paid for. It costs them pretty much the same to keep running with no customer as it would with a customer.

Yeah, I have to say I'm gonna guess they're doing the offer to get people thru the doors and hopefully send them away as happy customers who'll spread the word.

It's worth occasionally taking a small hit to profits if you're feeling you're not well known enough for a certain product or service.

Last I heard, becoming a qualified mechanic is not part of the driving test??

If in doubt use your local government MOT testing station. They are properly trained and do the job properly, and are only incentivized to give honest reports.
#32
By the way on my last test a bulging brake hose was found - my car was unsafe to drive.

I just don't know where people come from who say silly things like "MOT is a money spinner and not a test whether your car is safe to drive."

I take the point that this looks like a Loss Leader to drum up future business. But I maintain that they could not do an MOT for £15 as a long term business, they would be broke in a matter of months.

The same is true of most deals which are posted on this site. That's what makes it a deal!

It was just a bit of a strange thing to find as a loss leader as its basically their only product, im just a born sceptic.

Now voting hot.

all MOT testers have to be qualified to do MOT's, I should know as im an mot tester/vehicle mechanic of many years, now wether the tester conducts a proper test as per mot rules is a different matter. see here for the official VOSA testers manuals, they are the ones we have to abide by.

you should get a proper & full test no matter where you take it to, be it an independent, main dealer etc etc. If you feel a test isnt conducted in the proper manner then i urge you to seek help through the appeal process as this will help get rid of some of the testers/stations that tar people like me (the honest stations/testers) out there with the same brush.

hmmm £15 for a test bearing mind it looks like you might have to pay full price to get it at £15 next year, we charge £48.00 but then we dont charge for adjusting headlamps if they need adjusting or such like.

but as in any trade "You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time, but you can never please all of the people all of the time."

I agree with the sentiment you are getting across, but AFAIK the bonnet isnt lifted on an MOT
