ARM supposedly claim the A5 in this is equal to a 1.2Ghz Cortex A8 and this is 3 times the speed of the older budget non A8 smartphones.

Methinks non native binaries run slower so anything no compiled correctly for an A5 will be slower.
I'd take the above as being OTT and just assume it is faster than older non Cortex chips.

Also, that IP67 rating is taken from the Defy. No mention of it on Motorola site and several reviews mention it isnt waterproof like the Defy.

DEFY:
107x59x13.4mm - 3.7inch screen
DEFY MINI:
109x58.5x12.6mm - 3.2 inch screen
Only screen size is mini... but phones are almost same size...

True, but 600Mhz makes the Android experience feel rather sluggish.
800Mhz-1Ghz is the generally accepted minimum these days.
This uses the newer Cortex-A5 which is faster than a Cortex A8 whilst using less power!

Not totally sure how A5 matches up to A8 but it will be significantly faster than than ARM11 based cores in the previous generation of "entry level" androids such as SanFran at same clock freq. So 600MHz A5 is almost certainly better than a 800MHz ARM11 + it supports ARMv7 architecture so you wont run into the "flash wont needs ARMv7" problems.

Is that based on your personal experience or just be reading the specs? The reviews that I have seen so far suggest that the screen is actually quite fine, despite the low spec.
they're unlockable, so if it's anything more than a tenner extra you're as well just buying a vodafone one right now
Thanks

easily the best 100 quid phone around atm is the Huawei G300
