You don't "need" their subscritption with this older system. I've currently been running it with a few accessories for over a year with no problems.

Basically hook the USB controller up to a server type machine (Has to be XP/Vista, not tried the latest software with Server 2003 as yet) and leave it looking after your home. You can get it to email you if door/cams are triggered etc, get your email sent to your phone and away you go

Bit annoying that you need a PC on all the time, but with the growing trend of home servers, it's not to much to ask. Plus, stick something like www.logmein.com free edition on it and you can monitor your cams etc while away from home.

I've got mine running with 1 wired cam, 2 wireless cams, 4 door sensors, 2 keypads and 2 sirens (sirens are indoors only, but quite loud).

Worked out ok for me so far, however will upgrade to something more substantial when I move house in a couple of years. Good introduction to home security I'd say :)

Been on here before many times, is there ongoing price for this. For the price its ok but the video quality is quite poor on this kit when I used it.
#4
Definitely needs windows?

The cam quality is pretty awful on this, I'm afraid, and its not supported by the manufacturer any more as its been superceded by newer kit. Bought it last time out but sent it back

PC needs to be switched on for this system to work. It doesn't work on it's own.

Also, has anyone actually managed to get this working with Vista?

Nah. As already mentioned, £59.99 is the usual price. A previous HUKD post had an unusually higher price.
Example posts for same item at same £59.99 price:

Still seems reasonable deal though

Maybe compare to this £25 HUKD post - doesn't have the cam feature but still able to send alerts by standard telephone line.

They have to be the motorola one's, from this website http://www.myhome247.co.uk/accessories.html

I forgot, I've got 2 power controllers to. Come in quite handy as when I walk in the garage, the cam detects movement so turns the light on :)

And to the Microsoft Windows comment, yes, it has to be Windows. Software/drivers won't work on Linux/Mac.

EDIT: Didn't see the post above
#13
is it worthbuying is it easy to set up
#14
I recently had to send one of these back to eBuyer as the Vista 64-bit drivers do not work and it wouldn't work on a virtual PC either, as most do not recognise USB devices.

I'm sure for someone looking for a cheap monitoring method in an office or such with an XP machine constantly on, it's a great deal. For me, however, it was a pain.
#15
Anyone know of a similar alarm which would work straight from a broadband router with no PC on all the time?
#16
Had one of these kit's and returned it. Camera quality is rubbish kinda defeated the point since I wanted to "see" what was going on around my property when I was out. Chocolate fireguard comes to mind.
#17
The new kit from the same company who sells the accessories do a new version of the kit that doesnt need a pc on. myhome247 - again no monthly fee needed for the basic starter kit and seems to have some really good reviews from bbc focus and computer shopper who gave it 5/5. Has anyone tried this one as the camera is a panasonic blc1 which should be much better quality right?
