If you put £30 crdit on it Virgin will unlock it for nothing or you can do what i did and got a friend who has a Virgin sim to put it in my Virgin mobile and called them up to ask for the unlock code and they posted the code to him for free, then he text it to me

They stopped doing this in May this year.
I tried to get my old phone unlocked last month and they wanted to charge £15 even though I have spent £100s with them. When I asked for the PAC codes for my four accounts they asked why I was leaving but they were still prepared to let them go for the sake of £15!

Virgin mobile has been taken over, hence the new tariffs, lack of service etc.......been with them years but in the last couple of months, yuk.

Yeah same here I've been with Virgin a few years now and on sim only for the last 18 months. I've just bought a K770i from their overpriced shop using my Red discount but the beggers want £15 just to unlock it despite the £ hundred's I've paid them over the years.

I'm gonna move to O2 Simplicity as it's a much better deal and better signal wise too.

I put it to their CS rep the other day that they were only charging this £15 because too many people were leaving but he reckoned the real reason was because "Every other network charges to unlock their phones so why shouldn't we".

Gonna see if I can do it myself first with Setool and XS++. If not our local market does unlocks for £10 but either way will invalidate the warranty so if I can't do it myself for free I might aswell bite the bullet and pay Virgin the £15 and keep the warranty intact.

LOL you are right Virgin are behaving like beggars

phoned my local one but they did not have it, she pulled it up on the computer and gave me details of other stores on the computer showing stock so if you live near Kidlington or the old Milton Keynes store they have them!
#15
They have about 5 left in Coventry A45 (or did at lunchtime). I tried a Vodafone sim in it and it worked OK.

Does the £20 credit come with phone or is it applied at a later date eg. like the Carphone Warehouse do?

Well I put the sim in and dialled their balance enquiry line and it said £20 credit. In the store the Sim boxes are sellotaped to the mobile box and it says £20 credit on it.

Well I've just rang 5 mins ago to cancel my Virgin Mobile sim only contract, was waiting in the queue for 14 mins before getting through to someone (tho that was noting compared to the other day when I waited 25 mins only to be cut off).

As others have mentioned I wasn't offered any kind of incentive to stay with them they just cancelled it down straight away.

Found a few sim cards I had lying around and stuck them all onmy account. Came to a grand total of £86. looks like they'll owe me money come my final bill!

O2 Simplicity here I come!

By the way for anybody already on Virgin Mobile, just in case you weren't already aware, you can buy this phone for £10, register the new sim card on your online account and ring Virgin customer services and get them to transfer the £20 credit from the new sim card onto your original one. Then sell the phone on eBay.

Plus if you give it 24 hours between registering the sim card online and ringing customer services you'll get an extra £2 on the sim card, just for registering it. Making the total £22!

Hi,
Were these SIM cards with free credit on? And did you consolidate all the credit from the cards into one SIM card/number? I read somewhere that they restrict people from doing this (or only allow a certain number of "transactions"). Thanks

Edit: Oh and do you know if they are still offering the £2 free credit for registering the £5/£0 credit SIMs ?

I've just checked now and I put them all on last night but the extra £2's still haven't gone on yet. Gonna give it til tonight and transfer them all onto my main sim whether the £2's are on or not as I've got a bill coming out tomorrow.

As for them only allowing you to transfer credit from a limited amount of cards at a time I haven't heard of this as such tho other people on this forum have recommened to only do a couple at a time as it gets their staff confused!

Thanks for the information. The registration page states:

If you've read about getting £2 free airtime when you register, we're sorry to say that we've had to withdraw this offer. You can still get your hands on 2 free downloads when you register, plus, loads more with Crave.

I'll give it a go anyway :)

Dealextreme do unlocking sim adapters might work for you cost about $7 dollars , theirs quite a few of them so check which is best for your phone.

Hmmnnn...............so they've withdrawn the £2 registration bonus then. It just about sums up the way the company is going right down the nick at the moment. They used to be really good with very competitive prices and had the best customer services around.

These days the customer service has gone awful, you struggle to get through to anyone in less than 15 minutes and the prices, compared to other networks like o2, are becoming less and less competitive all the time!

Frankly I'm glad I jumped ship at the right time.

Certainly looks like it. Let's see...

- withdrawal from affiliate scheme/cashback
- removed rollover on free minutes and texts
- reduced the free credit on PAYG SIMs from £5 to £1
- stopped offering £2 free when registering a SIM online
- customer service deterioration
- stopped offering free unlocks after accruing £30 in credit, now charge £15 cash.
- delivery charge increase to £3.99
- handset prices still laughable
