could be locked to network you purchase on...
- LOH1153

Except for iPhones (which locks to the first SIM inserted) and some Blackberries (some Blackberries are SIM free and some are not depending on model) and Network Branded phones, phones at Phones4U (like Carphone Warehouse) are NEVER locked. The phones are purchased directly from the manufacturer SIM free. They make their margin from the networks.
- tpol

EDIT:

Just to add, when I tried to buy this from the Phones4U, instore, the guy tried all my various different network SIMs for the same handset. Also, except iPhones, no other phone locks to the first SIM inserted. iPhone does by using Apple's servers; no other manufacturer uses their servers to activate and keep lock status of the phone in the same way as Apple. Nokia sometimes does use an activation process by connecting to it's servers but it is nowhere near as sophisticated as Apple's process.

Funny how so many people perfectly OK with no SD slot. Complete dealbreaker for me because:

    1. Greedy - they know you can't add more so they charge you 30 quid extra for 16GB version. 8GB SD card would cost a fiver tops.

    2. Max 16GB not that wonderful in this day and age easy fill it up. Much better 32 or 64GB card.

    3. Slower access, also of course "No signal = no stuff!"

    4. They can nose about in your stuff on the cloud but not on your SD card.

Is there any difference in device function and upgrade potential between … Is there any difference in device function and upgrade potential between getting one from Phones4u or Tesco? Assuming the Tesco one gets unlocked via the unlocking ebay thread deal for a couple of pounds. Can they be made to be like a sim free version or does that cause issues with future OS updates? I don't know much about Android. Somewhere I read something about changing roms and/or bootloader would mean the original ones would need to be reloaded to get an OS upgrade? Is that correct and does that mean that what is stored on the phone would be wiped out each time? Thanks.

the phones from p4u are all unlocked(can run on other networks) and run on a generic RETAIL Rom which will get any future updates direct from Motorola.
the phones from Tesco run on a TESCO rom, which if like all other android phones locked to a network rom, when updates come out from motorola, tesco will then add their brand to it before it gets sent out to the tesco phones.
the time between a motorola update and a tesco update can take between weeks or months.

unlocking your phone so that you can use another sim does not effect your Rom, your phone will still remain tesco branded.
you can flash a RETAIL rom to your TESCO phone which would mean that all future updates will come to you from Moto and not Tesco anymore. whether you keep your phone as tesco or retail, updates do not wipe your phone. Flashing a RETAIL rom would mean it would behave as if it was bought from p4u/simfree and not tesco. keep in mind, even after installing the RETAIL rom, you will still need a sim unlock to use on other netwroks.
heres a link to flash retail over tesco modaco.com/top…om/

To be fair they aren't exactly ripping people off with the 16GB imo. Perhaps someone could give me the name of a mobile at £150 with the same spec as this? And how you use your phone is personal preference - just beause someone feels 8/16GB is insufficient for their usage doesn't mean it will be for someone else.

Slightly worse spec all round and half the ram.
Still considering the Nexus 4 never dropped below about £170 new what would you expect from something for about 2/3 the price.

Sometimes it pays to read following posts. You would have seen that we discussed it's possibly the game and the fact that it's a dual sim version that might be taking up more space than usual and also that the 3.9gb was not an estimate from me but it came from a reviewer on YouTube who clearly shows 3.9gb on the phone so CALM DOWN.

Just went into the Phones4U in Newbury (the one in the PC World in the Pinchington Lane retail park) and they have 4 of the 8Gbs in stock. Had a play and it's a really nice phone, smooth and pretty vanilla. Very light and a decent screen size. They have PAYG upgrade at £99.99 which is a bargain if you know someone with a PAYG SIM. They ARE unlocked, the box is retail and the salesman confirmed it. PAYG is £120 with a SIM and £10 credit, SIM free is £135 but it doesn't make any sense to buy it like this since they're unlocked.

Haparrently they are getting the 16GBs at the end of the month. I also checked the free space, it reported at 5.52GB free and I was the first person to switch it on so it has nothing extra on it. No-one mentioned the free white back that comes with it though ...

Still debating whether to go for this or the Razr I, I'm leaning towards this especially at under a ton.

They do not want to see the sim or your old phone, all they asked for was my old number which they punched into their computer. What checks their computer made I have no idea sorry. The only reason they saw my sim was when I realised it would have to be cut down to micro size which they did for me. I have heard that people have borrowed an active pay as you go sim & that has worked for them even when registered under a different name as the phone they receive is unlocked... So give it a go, the shop people are very helpful especially if you are paying in cash.

I bought one yesterday, theres a few little things that are less than perfect, which are:

camera: don't get me wrong, its good enough, better than other budget phones, but it;s still lacking.

screen: resolution, brightness etc are really good, but its tall, like an iphone 5. my orange monte carlo which is 4.3" is actually wider, plus you do lose a little to the soft keys. however i;d still have bought it advertised as 4.3"

bezel around phone: tiny gap i can see getting filled with dirt, mine already has little bits in that i cant easily remove.

    rear cover: fingerprint magnet

side buttons: stick out a bit too far and they are a bit unrefined. Could have done with tapered edges just to avoid them getting caught on things in your pocket

Things I like which I werent expecting:

camera LED: many budget phones omit this, but theres one on this phone. It's very bright and served well with a torch app last night on my way home.

rear cover: although its a fingerprint magnet, the texture is nice and offers a nice level of friction. Theres a depression around the M logo which is also handy as you can sit your finger in it while holding to help grip it a bit better.

battery: it's now been 24 hours since last charged, I have 20% left. This includes a good bit of usage on facebook etc last night on 3G, plus a fair bit of camera usage, and 5 mins of the LED being used as a torch. Really good I think!

    for the money it's amazing.

Bought the 8GB Sim Free version this morning from Phones 4 U.

This was a downgrade for me, coming from a iPhone 5S onto this one (5S wasn't worth the cash so sold) so I initially believed there would be a huge drop in performance and quality.

The camera is fine, again, not up there with the big boys but it's decent enough to take a good looking picture.
The speed of the phone between switching apps and loading times is good, although I can't comment on the larger apps/games as I'm fairly sure this phone won't perform too well with them.

The Moto G is a really good phone. The specs aren't up there with the big hitters (HTC One, 5S, S4) but it's a very good phone with a top quality screen resolution, great speakers and of course the absurdly low price.

Of course you'll struggle to play the bigger phone games or running massive applications, however if you're an occasional internet browser, social networker or candy crusher, like myself, you'll find this phone absolutely perfect.

I've owned all the iPhones, an S3 and a nexus 4 and if I had to compare the Moto G (performance wise) to one of those, it'd sit somewhere between the iPhone 4S and Galaxy S3.

Hope this helps any potential buyers.

& Thanks to the OP for showing me this deal.

This phone is really good value for money. Some people are reporting the notification LED isn't working properly. Apparently this is usually caused by restoring settings from a previous Android device.
You can download a free widget from the Play Store called Notification Light Widget, released by Motorola, to fix it. In fact, it allows you to toggle the notification LED on or off. And it works.
