I got a brand new one for £330 from http://www.Hangsun.co.uk last week after missing out on the canon refurb one. It says a 2 year guarantee and came with the IS 18-55mm lens. Very quick delivery and it came in an Amazon box. Seal was slightly loose but it was a brand new camera. Very happy with the purchase.

Thanks a lot for the info cloudshine! just got mine last week from them as well, new, quick delivery on Amazon box, very pleased :)

Or get the 50mm 1.8 for £80, make a great starter kit!

You cant just have a 50mm lens though. Not good for group photos

Depends on the use. Either way the 50mm is a great value lens so with this value camera it would be a good kit. Although an 18-55 would help a starter get an idea of what focal length is more useful to them.

indeed. I love my 50mm lens. I also have the 18-55 ISII & 70-300mm lens in the bag. I just need a fisheye lens for a good price

Good luck with that (_;)

**** i just bought a 600d mind you I am spending more on lens than on the camera. I would recommend the Canon EF-S 18-55 STM IS Lens for the 600d, the STM model is pretty much silent so no lens focus noise on the inbuilt mic when recording videos. Got mine new white box off ebay for £85 from a seller with a good rep. But have seen them cheaper one word of caution do not mix up the Canon EF-S with the Canon EF-M lens as they will not fit the EOS range.

Also get the Duracell DR9945 Replacement Digital Camera Battery For Canon LP-E8 Camera, DO NOT confuse them with the LP-E5 ones they look very similar and are abit cheaper

MyMemory Store have an offer on at the moment buy one and get one at 5% off. translates to saving 58p on 2 batteries. If you buy 4 you only save 60p so better to do 2 seperate buys. I did:D no affiliation just a happy customer

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/New-Duracell-DR9945-Replacement-Digital-Camera-Battery-For-Canon-LP-E8-Camera-/291159981952?pt=UK_Camera_Batteries&hash=item43ca7cbf80

Also get an SDHC card with at least 25mb/s, benchmarked mine at 22.1mb/s RAW video file with magic lantern. The bog standard Transend class 10 i had choked after just afew shots on continous shooting dropping to 1 shot a second, while the SanDisk 16GB Extreme U1 and the SanDisk 16GB Extreme C10 cards worked well maintaining 3 shots a second, but i will be buying 32gb soon as the 16gb fill up quicking when you use RAW and JPEG.

hope this helps someone

I have a duracell. imo doesn't last very long when it gives low power warning ( just in case anyone has a great photo opportunity and risks running the duracell a little longer and then "Awwwww! :( " )

I use a vertical battery grip holds 2 LP-E8 batteries or 6 x AA works well and it does vastly improve my cack-handed grip I moved from the Canon PRO1 to the 600D dramatic improvement in terms of picture quality, mostly due to lens and also a massive learning curve. I have signed up for evening classes in DSLR at my local college and DSLR for Dummies.

And if you want to get a grip check them out carefully some cause battery drains reportedly

I only use at home so I normally have 2 bodies and 3 batteries available with recharging 'on site'. Plus try to avoid complexities :)

How much would it cost for a lens for this, as I can get a new d3100 camera and lens for £248 from Sainsburys with my wife's staff discount.

depends on the lens, from under a hundred up to many hundreds
you are probably better buying it new though @ 100 or so for lens and a new body etc

My point was, you dont need a high end camera to get great photos.

Totally agree :) Went scuba diving a few years back. Guy on boat had a Canon D50, a couple of L lenses and a eff off housing. About 3 grands worth of kit. My GF was using a small canon compact in a housing total cost around £300. Even he was impressed with the quality of images out of them.

That's why I always recommend a good quality bridge camera if they are thinking of taking it up before diving into SLR'S and the gazillion different combos around.
I went Sony DSC-blah -> Canon 300D -> Canon 5D. In all honesty the 5D doesn't beat the (very old) 300d in many areas besides build. The 5D takes a LOT of punishment. In fact, the crop sensor on the 300D (and all later models in the range) had a huge benefit of giving you a much larger range of lenses at much lower prices.

If you can't get a "pop" image out of a 300D or its replacements, then a 5D won't help you.

Add to that the fact that a 5D mk 1 (those at £500) is years older than a 650D, and the rate of technology improvements; the 5D really is only going to be a good option for a very limited market depending on your requirements.

I'm totally new to photography and have no clue where to start.

I want a canon that provides amazing picture quality in close ups of faces and stuff.

What canon do you recommend and what lens?

Personally if you are totally new to photography I would start with a compact bridge camera, as these can be found quite cheaply but will give you all the manual controls to get started. Then if you find you are using it a lot and enjoying it I would move onto an intermediate DSLR. I would only suggest this Canon 5D, a full frame 5D if you are either wadded, or going to do this semi-professionally.

Steves digicams has good reviews up on most cameras out there, even if it is American! http://www.steves-digicams.com/
Even with a retina screen the 650D will suffice! This will take pictures with a resolution of 5184 x 3456 which is a little better than the Retina Display!

Of course you will fill up an iPad rather quickly with full size images, plus the iPad will only show jpegs anyway so always going to take a hit on quality.
