Entertaining read for a bargain price
Amazon.co.uk Review
What an extraordinary fellow Howard Marks is. His autobiography takes him from his South Wales childhood and Oxford University education through his life dealing marijuana and the enormous mythology that accrued around what the tabloids called "the English Toff Drugs King of the World". This book is called Mr Nice after one of the many aliases Marks's life as a merchant of pot obliged him to assume, but it describes him perfectly too: the epitome of British niceness, the nicest international criminal you could hope to meet. It's not hard to see why this has become a cult book--Marks is a brilliant version of a mate down the pub, telling you the gobsmacking stories of his many adventured life. The writing is direct and the narrative will detain you as comprehensively as Marks himself was detained for seven years at Terre Haut Penitentiary, Indiana. He was released the same day as Mike Tyson. "I had," he observes mildly, "been continuously in prison for the last six-and-a-half years for transporting beneficial herbs from one place to another, while he had done three years for rape." Truly there is no justice; but there are eye-popping adventures, hilarious touches and a thorough-going wisdom in this excellent book

Not really a hot deal but for anyone interestd in the work of George RR Martin, I understand that 'A Dance with Dragons' is finally out in July (five years late). Not sure if this will be another disappointment but sounds more promising than previous release dates.

I met Howard Marks at a Super Furry Animals gig about ten years ago. Can't say I was that impressed by him TBH.

A really good story, so glad I read the book before I watched the film..... it doesn't do it justice. Hot.

proper **** that bloke. Interesting read. 2 quid can;t go wrong.
#17
Awesome book, film however is rubbish!
#18
Ordered, thanks. Have some heat!

Film was so disappointing. Tried to be edgy and modern, but failed miserably.

The book however is genius. As is the bloke himself - seen him lots of times at Glastonbury, he's a genuinely interesting and clever chap, and always ready for a chat. Knows more about weed than I even will :)

Heat added, cheers O.P.

The blokes an old pot head, and the very worst kind; one who thinks shifting gear is an achievement. Should have been locked up for longer and banned from writing. What poor sods have tried to follow in his deranged footsteps?
#21
He's ace. Had a more interesting life than you or I, and is an affable chap to boot. I can think of worse role models. He flogged weed. Not the worst crime ever.
#22
I suppose you have to be of similar pursuasion to appreciate him.

Now there's a backhanded remark.

He's an intelligent man, who did crazy stuff *years ago*, when we weren't as uptight about *gasp* smoking weed.

I'd worry more about unemployment, tobacco and cheap alcohol now if I was you.

He's just another drug dealer of which there seems to be an increasing amount probably because some people glorify being a druggie.

Rubbish film

Awesome book

'Marks is a brilliant version of a mate down the pub'. Difference is my mates don't sell drugs. I suppose the price tells a story in itself. Next stop Poundland?

What, down the pub? Where they sell drugs, legally?

Ha ha everything on here turns into a big debate :-) so stupid lol. Everyone has an opinion just let them air it. Were here for good deals not petty arguments.

Good book? Bad book?

Who cares lol. It's good for that money regardless of literature tastes it will suit someone nicely.

Oh just had a thought that might drag this debate out a bit longer. Just for fun like.

1 Had a more interesting life --------- easy to beat me there
2 Affable chap ----------------------------- most dodgy people are affable as a front to being dodgy
3 Can think of worse role models -- Gengis Khan, Osama Bin Laden, Little Jimmy Cranky
4 Not the worst crime ever ------------ Didn't invent Tofu or destroy the WTC with aeroplanes.

By that reckoning, you'll be pleased to know that Paul Gadd's autobiography 'come on, come on......................my nephew' is out in all good bookshops just before Christmas.

I wonder if that is offensive enough to be removed. I'm having doubts about the post myself so it probably is.
