I am looking at getting a new computer, desktop or laptop, but I've been out of the loop so long I don't know where to begin. Does anyone know of any good sites to get me up to date on what to look for? And also anyone have an opinion on any manufacturer that really does make more reliable, better-quality PCs and laptops and has good after-sales support? I'm not so bothered about raw spec, but want quality components and ideally, a quiet machine.

go on ebuyer, its a great website and they also have a mini guide on building your own pc, I wouldn't recommend a gaming laptop because it will get outdated very quickly unless your willing to spend lots on the highest end laptop.

Scan as above are a great company but their machines tend to be very pricey for what you get. Obiovusly laptops are generally very quiet by nature but it's worth reading reviews of what ever it is you want to get.

There are loads of forums to help the one I use is http://www.hexus.net, loads of good guys over there (including me lol although I am also somewhat out of the loop now), they will set you on the right path.

As mentioned above building your own PC is the best way to get value for money (in terms of spec) but as you value after care support you are better off with a company that does on site support if your PC is crucial to you or a decent collect and return service if it isn't.

I do appriciate what MSI are doing with these laptops, you dont get much better bang for buck in a gaming laptop. This one appears to be missing a blu ray player which is a shame but otherwise a great spec. MSI have come a long way in terms of reliability in the last few years also, they used to be awful in my opinion but now they are great (using one now :))

Thanks for the helpful replies I will check those sites out.

I've got to hand it to my 2 current laptops, an Asus and a Samsung both are well built, my Asus is 3 years old just over and still as good as ever. That said if you are looking for gaming spec the best starting point I have found is notebook check, a lot of stuff we dont get in the UK but bring up some graphics cards in your range of performance and you can get some listed machines that hulk them around.

Personally I'm waiting for Sandy Bridge to take hold and for old tech to go down a bit more in price.

Bought the GX740 from Scan in September. The laptop had a fault, which upon returning Scan refused to accept despite sending screenshots of failed diagnostics. Then they said that if I were to contact them further, they would inform the police about the dodgy software on my hard drive, which were a few games and suites I'd used for benchmarking and stress testing. My bank eventually absorbed the cost after many letters and phone calls.

I honestly can't see why people seem to praise scan for their customer service, which for me at least involved blackmail and complete disregard for consumer rights.

Wow. That's the first bad report I've heard about Scan.

In case anyone is wondering why this is good. The graphics card is one of the best available for laptops right now. Check the awesome benchmarks........

Hehe yeah I guess if the laptop isn't around the £300 mark then it ain't worth posting it. Never mind it was a good deal for the people that know what they are talking about. Can be expired now I think as Today Only page has changed although you can still get it for £913 I think

Comet sold out of this laptop in a couple of days and they charged £100 more than this.

I am typing on this laptop right now (Bought it last August with 8GB ram and blu ray.) It's a very very good Laptop indeed, the turbo-fan is noisey but it does keep the laptop very cool even on full load, the i5-460m is pretty nippy as well managing to emulate quite a few PS2 games at full speed using the latest version of PCSX2.
The speakers on this thing always blow me away but if you plan on playing using the turbo fan to keep it cool then I would recommend getting a pair of noise cancelling headphones, I use a pair of Goldring NS1000s and I cannot hear the fan at all while using them.

Where have you been? Under a rock? lol

If you look on most Scan deals here there are always people talking about their horrible customer service. I have experienced it myself although it wasn't as bad as drspa44's experience!

Scan has a very bad reputation, personally think they should consider blocking them, on every thread people have had bad experiences.

there is something wrong with hotukdeals, this deal is -2 and yet it's listed on the "hot deals" page!

I can honestly say that I've also had problems with scan, more recently two weeks ago, I ordered one of those external hard drive hot swap things and after being used twice the flap that is spring loaded broke, I rang them up only to hear the tech woman tell me that it's not covered under warranty for things like that, Hmm I work in retail so I know my stuff about returning things, anyway seeing as I only live about 15 miles from scan I decided to take it down there and speak to them in person, after about an hour of being pi$$ed about with people telling me that "it isn't covered" I finally got a replacement only after things started to get a little heated, but I got treated like an idiot.

It also happened to a coolermaster case I purchased a good few years back, I was busy at work and someone at home took delivery, it wasn't until a day or two after that I finally opened it only to find that there was a massive scratch on the front of the case, I took it back and as you can imagine got a tornado of abuse from them saying that I'd done it myself, it was only when I started to ring my credit card company whilst I was there that they exchanged it!

I'll think about about ordering anything from them again tbh, I'd rather pay more from somewhere like amazon and have a decent return service.

Scan are superb, been using them for nearly a decade and NEVER had a problem with them.
The FREE next day delivery is brilliant and products are ALWAYS packaged correctly, can't fault them.
Scan & Ebuyer are the best e-tailers imho.

This laptop was rated as one the best 5 gaming laptops by techradar.com on the 30th Sept 2010.

Also, a review (4 out of 5) from techradar.com here.

Well kudos to Scan for managing the hugely difficult task of putting the right item in the parcel and packing it correctly....

It's when you have something go wrong and have to deal with their "customer is always wrong" customer services that people have bad experiences.

Ironically, I chose to buy my GX740 from Scan for £926 instead of from OcUK for £899, because I didn't trust OcUK's customer service. :(

Yes anyone who has tried scan customer service will know how poor they can be, I ordered a processor a while back opened it to find pins had been bent, called and got an RMA. I sent it back expecting a replacement, after weeks of chasing they refunded the part but refused to refund what I had paid for delivery!!!! They after writing to them to get the cost of delivery back they said that when they recieved the return there was nothing wrong with it and no pins were bent. Appart from an office full of IT boffs as my witnesses when I opened my proc and lack of any other reason for returning it Scan wouldn't change their stance and refused to refund delivery costs.

Ever since I've used Ebuyer and Amazon for most business and personal stuff...

"Resolution: 1920x1080 "

And a decent resolution to boot! Voted hot :)

Have to say I've personally not had a problem with Scan's customer service (but have also heard a few horror stories) - they handled my only RMA with them very well.

I do so love how cold gaming laptops get and yet how hot apple deals get, not slagging off apple at all but for all the things people say to justify their high price, there are just as many things that can be said to justify the price of a decent gaming laptop. It's amazing what a little clever marketing can do....
#30
Hmm, scan have always been superb with me also. Pretty weird hearing otherwise. Their delivery services are amazing.

I have also had a run in with their RMA service about a year and a half ago, and they were really cool about it and even had a van come pick up the massive box which the stuff came in so they could have my computer parts checked out. They tested the parts, found I had faulty ram and replaced it and sent the whole thing back free of charge.

From personal experience I would recommend scan. Reading you guys suprised me.
#31
scan been excellent for me, but hearing quite a few bad stories about them pop up more often than ever before...

Heat added ! My friend has this laptop....It plays crysis warhead MAX settings!

I have spoken.
#33
I have the 17" version of this with only 4gb ram but its a rocket and flawlessly plays any game you throw at it with gusto.

However the 15" is a little too small imo for a gaming lappy.

For anyone buying ...if you get heat issues with your GPU , you have to update the GPU BIOS then your good to go.

Had mine now for about a year and it still is up there with the best.

I work for a company which repairs laptops and computers, we also have a retail store so I see things from the other perspective, customers can often be wrong and very wrong, however I try my best to help them, but sometimes you just can't help people. I can imagine Scan get plenty of people like that, however there is no excuse for bad customer service. Even if a customer is in the wrong I don't treat them badly, I try and help politely, I guess Scan are human and sometimes they don't offer the customer service they should.
#35
Votted Hot just for the Dynaudio Sound!

This is a fantastic price for this laptop. There is no way you'll get a better spec for the same amount of money (laptop that is). I know you can spec a better PC for the same or less, but this is great for a gaming laptop. Don't know why it's so cold, seems to be a few people with problems with scan. I myself haven't experienced this, but have never had to return anything to them.
