Cute little thing... Shame it is as expensive as a full sized laptop... Only £320 + P&P and it is on Preorder. If you want the Windows XP model, it will cost you £30 extra. Specs are 1.6GHz CPU (ATOM/Diamondville??), 1GB RAM, 80GB HDD, 10-inch LED screen, Webcam, Linux...

The name of the notebook is just MSI Wind so you can go round telling your friends and colleagues "I've got Wind!"

It will never outdo the EEE :)

Twice the weight (2kg+) and much slower boot times due to the type of hard drive.

If going for this, why not go with a standard laptop.

Are you sure about the weight? I heard it was supposed to be also around the 1kg mark.

According to Expansys, shipped weight is 2.05 kg so unless they are adding stones to the box, it will be around the 2kg mark.

Shipped weight would include charger, manuals and packaging wouldn't it? I have read that the laptop weighs 1.2kg, but that was a couple of weeks ago, and the finalised specs weren't announced yet. I would be absolutely amazed if it was much more than that though.

Looks like this is the most up to date specs listed elsewhere:

http://mikecane2008.wordpress.com/2008/04/24/attention-msi-wind-has-wings/

Still suggesting 1.2kg.

Most worrying thing is that the battery life is now rumoured to be just 2.5 hrs with the included 3 cell battery. Personally, I will wait until I can get one of these new UMPCs with a 5hr or more battery life (without the need to buy a 2nd heavier and bulkier battery). There are going to be more and more competitors in this market and by the end of the summer. Specs to price ratio will improve dramatically, I'm sure.

I forgot about the manuals... so used to a few CDs nowadays.

Charger / powersupply though should be counted as part of the overall weight.

The battery life on pretty much all the UMPC's is low as they are keeping the weight down so use a low capacity battery. The quoted battery life is in line with or better than the EEE 9 inch model.

I have not seen specs on any the UMPC machines that offer a 5 hourish battery life but would love to have one as would save having to get 2 chargers.

A site worth looking at is http://www.umpcportal.com/index.php

I would not call this deal as HOT deal as it is at the RRP price and essentially is just a pre order as far as I can see so not really a hot deal.

You forgot the packaging also which can also be a lot. The weight you typically quote for a laptop includes the battery but not the charger.

biggest screen available and a backlit LED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

looks amazing at only 1.2KG. Looks the best of them all by far. Big screen and LED backlighting give it a wow factor.

will be late and in short supply as is using the Atom CPU

I'm pretty sure the eee, even the 7" versions, have LED backlighting as well.

Actually, I think it's more to do with price as the Sony TZ31MN is also 1.2kg but has four-five hours of battery life (running a core 2 duo).

Personally I'll either go for a 4G eee because of it's reasonable price or wait for the HP 2133 because of it's big keyboard, express card slot and even higher resolution, this wind doesn't seem to offer anything that the other emerging cheap portables don't.
