Can't see it on the site, either that or it has been put up to £199.

Good price because unlike the Argos netbooks, this one has a 6-cell battery, which means 5-6 hrs life.

Good deal. One of the first Netbooks, but still one of the best. 6-cell battery is a real bonus.
Other good points:
XP not Vista or W7 Starter - Wireless b,g and n - 1.3 Mpx webcam - Excellent keyboard and a decent screen.

This is also one of the easiest netbooks to upgrade or mod. Just a few screws then you can remove the base which gives free access to the RM, Wireless card and HDD.

Good stuff. And 2.5% Quidco for £4 cashback. I am getting tempted!

EDIT : I get 'This code has expired' when I try to use it - despite Quidco clearly saying it expires on 31st July! Anyone got it to work?

EDIT 2 : Apparently the SECRET codes expire today and there are new ones tomorrow (which may or may not be better) so a lady from Maplin gave me this code to use for £10 off... and it worked... l8cw3y5rfzyl2rtaz6ff .

Have the U130 myself & these netbooks definitely need a 6-cell battery.

That's a personalised voucher issued for you

How do you figure that one out? Have you tried it and it doesn't work? I'd be amazed as she didn't ask me who I was so unless she hacked into my PC via my phone call I don't think it was personalised.... Unless it can only be used once (if that's what you meant).

In any case - if SECRET10 does not work for you then ring 0800 2983977 and choose option 1 (don't do customer service option as they were useless) and explain the voucher doesn't work....and they should give you one... oo-er.

My chat with them

Donna entered the room
Donna: Hi, How can i help?
you: hi
you: I'm having trouble using a money off voucher
you: The voucher code I was given was: secret10
you: by Quidco.com
you: The product I want to purchase is over £150 and therefore should qualify for the discount
Donna: Quidco is not maplin sorry, you need to deal with maplin direct and subscribe to our newsletter to receive vouchers
you: I'm already subscribed to your newsletter
you: http://www.quidco.com/maplin-electronics/
you: The voucher states it expires 31st July
you: You haven't been helpful at all
you: Goodbye

Screen res is poor, wont do 720P vids. CPU has old architecture so not really that fast/efficient, still for the money its good if all your gonna do is surf, word processing and video chat

I own the original Wind U100, not sure what Plus adds to the spec exactly apart from a 6cell Battery. Mine was a 3 cell and only lasted 1hr 30mins give or take. My 9cell purchased separately from ebay is lasting around 5-6 hours.

This is a first generation netbook too, but a very good one apart from the horrible Sentelic touchpad (this one may be either Synaptics or Sentilic so should check around).

That's standard for a netbook, and the Plus version has an ever-so-slightly faster processor. It replaces the Intel Atom N270 CPU with an N280 processor that runs at 1.66GHz and which has an FSB of 667MHz. The N270 chip runs at 1.6GHz and has a 533MHz FSB.

This is great for hackintosh! ... I'm might be tempted seeming as Argos Clearance Bargains don't want my hard earned cash!

Thanks OP!

Hmm... rang them and they seem to stop doing the code now! The lady advised me to order at full price and then e-mail them, and they'll refund you... think they've cottoned on... put me off slightly now.

Hot from me, got my order in via Quidco and voucher worked fine.
#21
If ordering without a code, the quidco comes to 6% (£10.19), then If I e-mail them about the SECRET10 it's another tenner off! In theory it should come to £149.79 then....
or would this work: Use Quidco link, but don't use any of their voucher codes for 6% Quidco, then at checkout use Maplin's newsletter vouchers e.g. £7 off £100 spend... £169.99 - £7 = 162.99, then would Quidco track at 6% £9.77 ... bringing the total to £153.21 ? Anyone thinks either will work?

That's a shame. It sounds like you got the same lady as me the first time you rang (she was on customer services). You are right - the code I was given was a one time use code.... I just tried it again. The second time I rang I never mentioned Quidco - I set up a new account subscribed to the newsletter and then clicked on the email that came through from Maplin - vouchers appeared in my account which would then not work. I explained this and they gave me the code.

I would be tempted to wait until tomorrow when the new codes come out. There is a good chance there could be a code for £12 off £150 spend....but then there could be not stock. It looks like a good buy from the posts in the thread last time this was raised on HDUK.

This is an absolute bargain!
I posted a few weeks ago for the white version, circa £185 after voucher code.

Interestingly, the older U100 standard (3-cell), and the white versions cost more than this black 6-cell.

Hehe! Should be ok (as long as it looks new) plus you can return to store: http://www.maplin.co.uk/Help.aspx?HelpPageID=73#anclocator

Q: Can I return a product if I am not happy with it?
A: For any unwanted goods Maplin offers a 28-day return policy*. To return a product under this policy you should either:

• Return the product to one of Maplin stores within 28 days
• Follow the returns instructions on the delivery paperwork
• Contact our Customer Care team by telephone, email or letter.
You should also return a valid proof of purchase and the returned product must be complete and in ‘as new’ condition with original packaging. Maplin must receive all returns within 28 days of the returns number being issued and any goods received after that period will be dealt with on an individual basis.

Suspect Returns go into thier A or B Stocks! Still mulling over this....

Yeah it suppose to be wirelessN but my missis has one and our router is N and the netbook is not.

Fairly easy, but invalidates the warranty of course!

Thats a bit silly as its got the option yo upgrade the ram to 2GB.. hmmm I dunno should I wait a couple of months at the new batch of netbooks are coming out although they are going to be more expensive arent they, my budget is £200. I was going to get the Asus EEE 1001P http://www.ebuyer.com/product/190292 but the Winds CPU is slightly faster... arrrgh what do I do!!??

This is faster and the easiest netbook to put hackintosh... if you wait after the new models come out it will be a year or so till the price is this low!

If you need it now, then go for it... it's the best price for a new netbook below £160.

I emailed Msi when i did the upgrade and was told that the warranty was fine and they would still accept it just as long as the fault wasn't caused by damage caused by incorrect installation of the memory so theres no warranty issue. Why has no one mentioned the +point that when its plugged in and you press fn and either f10 or f11 and that overclocks the cpu to 2ghz which gives it a decent performance boost and is allowed by Msi.

Neither invalidates the warranty:

Can i upgrade my memory or harddrive without voiding the warranty?

To upgrade the memory or harddrive the warranty seal has to be broken, this however will not void the warranty as the user is allowed by the european law to upgrade his memory and harddrive. however note that units sold with 3rd party warranty (only) are subject to their upgrade policies. Please check with your place of purchase first before attempting any upgrades.

Note that MSI does not give any warranty for your purchased RAM/HDD, nor does it give warranty for any problem resulting from your added RAM.

For those looking to upgrade the ram to 2gb (most id expect) you should purchase
CRUCIAL 2GB 200-pin SODIMM DDR2 PC2-5300 (CT25664AC667) or similar. The u100 has a single memory expansion slot, so buy 1 stick of 2gb ram. You got to go into the bios and disable the onboard 1gb, or else it wont boot. Any qtions ask away :) i got my ram off ebay for £30

If you really want HD video playback (720/1080P) and can sacrifice built in WIFI then look into this: http://tech.icrontic.com/articles/reviews/broadcom-crystal-hd-review/

I did this for an NC10 I used to have, worked a treat! Then I got a micro USB wifi dongle off fleabay to compensate!
#37
Yep as polly69 states this can be set in the bios to run at 2ghz. Enable DOC and set to 24% - theres vids on youtube. Must be connected to mains for overclock to work. Upon power up at the msi splash screen, hold fn key and press f10. This activates the turbo mode and power LED lights orange. Not tried it but seen it done on youtube and seems to work

I was all set to but this netbook when I seen how much the Broadcom Crystal HD card would set me back (£40 - 60 delivered, is all I could find online, on ebay). Add to that the cost of a wireless USB dongle!? No thanks. I may as well put that huge extra chunk of money toward a netbook or laptop than can handle HD content.
