wasnt this £139.99 on ebay the other day?

I don't think so, I've been keeping my eye on the argos outlet for awhile.

I bought one of these on this deal a few weeks ago.
Great netbook for the money with Win7, bluetooth, 802.11n etc but note that the standard 3-cell battery lasts around 2-2.5 hours.

It doesn't look like MSI sell the 6-cell as a seperate part.

Really? Damn, I was hoping it was going to be 6-cell like in this review:

Good price. Have some heat.

Anyone looking to get a netbook with a view to building a Hackintosh would be better off with an older model as (AFAIK) this graphics chipset isn't supported at all in OSX.

Older Atom N270 models all seem to use the GMA945/950 chipset which works very well under Leopard/Snow Leopard.

'course if your just sticking with Win7, this is great!

Great price (heat added), but also consider the U100 for the same price.

I waited for (what seemed like) ages for a price drop on the MSI U100. In the end I bought one for £170 from the Argos outlet and it was a great purchase. Now it is available for £150.

Although it is the older model, there are some good reasons for considering it. First, it only costs £21 for an extra 1GB memory stick from Crucial. Second, by enabling an option (DOC percentage) in the BIOS you can then instantly overclock the cpu by pressing Fn+F10 keys (when using the laptop on the mains). This is very easy to do and you can overclock by 24%, which takes the N270 cpu up from 1.60 Ghz to 1.95Ghz!! There is also a more conservative 15% overclock option, which still takes the cpu to 1.86Ghz. The CPU-Z utility confirms these figures in normal usage. It only has a three cell battery, but I've found 6-Cell replacements for £25 on Ebay (from China - but you can get them quicker from the UK for a bit more money). It runs Windows XP, and I have installed VMware Server to run other operating systems (which is why I wanted the extra memory).

I was dubious about buying a refurb, but my netbook looked as good as new from Argos clearance bargains. I'm very pleased with it.

Hope this helps.

You can buy 6 cell on fleabay for £30 from a UK seller.

I bought this a while back from Argos and can say it runs better with Win XP.
(Unfortunately I haven't found all the drivers for XP, so have to stick with Win 7 for now).

If anyone has got the Windows XP drivers for the U130, I'd be very interested!

I think the U100 with Win XP is the better choice (if you can get it for the same price).

got one last time they were this price , excellent wee machine . Any techies out there advise how to burn the restore discs/ back up without going to the expense of buying a dvd drive to do so. Was hoping to transfer to a flash drive but this does not seem possible

If the software works the same as on my U100, then you should be able to create an ISO image. You can store this on another drive or a USB stick (not on the machine you are backing up though :whistling:). The image can be used to burn a CD/DVD at a later date if a factory restore is necessary.

Yes you can.
Before you attempt to do the below, backup your data to an external media!
Follow the instructions of the "BurnRecovery Help" file to create an ISO image on your hard disc. Then use a program like WinRAR or UltraISO to extract all files to a folder. You can use a USB stick and format it bootable (with Windows 7). Copy all files to the same USB stick. Set your "Startup Options" from "Boot from HDD" to "Boot from USB Drive" (press F12 during boot).

Restart computer and Windows will install from USB (This will reformat your HDD, so make sure all data is backed up first).

Alternatively, you could buy a DVD writer from auction site for about £25 and burn a recovery DVD. All you have to do then is change the netbock boot-up from HDD to external DVD.

Did a quick search on the internet and found the following if your wanting to give it a bash.

MSI Wind U130 Windows XP & Windows 7 Drivers | Laptop Drivers Download
http://www.laptop-driver.net/msi-wind-u130-windows-xp-windows-7-drivers/

You might also want to check out the MSI Wind User Community & Forum (if you haven't already) to see if there are any guides and links over there for Windows XP compatible device drivers for this model of netbook.

Cheers, Scotty Boy!

Scotty Boy! & Ferengi, thanks for your replies.

I tried those sites but my w-lan, camera, is the problem. No XP drivers anywhere. I tried Ubuntu too but there are no drivers for w-lan. This is why I think the U100 (or another with WinXP) would have been better for me. I might just sell mine and get a U100.

hi, can anyone tell me if the screen is crystal or mat?
#21
Argos have a high rating but also high amount of negative feedback. I bought a acer 5542 off them 2 weeks ago. came - faulty power port, wrong adaptor, came with vista though stated windows seven. Wrse thing yet. you have to pay for return and that is only once you can speak to them. 8 emails and numerous calls and cant get hold of them. in fact ebay have wrote to me to sayy they are considering suspending them because number of disputes currently against them. Sure some good deals but if you are the unlucky minority then no chance of getting product sorted or refunded. I wouldn;t take the risk.
#22
I got one of these in white at about the same price from Argos Clearance a couple of weeks ago.
Works fine but has a couple of marks on the inside of the screen.
It looks a bit like a mark left by a liquid spill but as it's internal, can't be wiped off.

Not really noticable in normal use and the laptop is great otherwise.

Oh, and to the poster who asked, the screen is matt.

It's the law that they pay the cost to return the item if it supplied faulty and you complain with 7 days of receiving the item.
#24
How do you earn Quidco on this?
#25
Login to Quidco, find Ebay, click the link, find the laptop and buy it now. Think you get a percentage of the sellers fees.
#26
Dammit!, I want a netbook with optical out so I can use it with a good DAC and my hi-fi!.
Good find though OP.

Have you tried instaling DriverMax it is free and should find all available drivers, it worked for me.

How well does this handle video playback of xvid files, if media player classic is instaled on it?

Good find OP, heat added.

If you have an avi file with a pure XviD codec it plays fine. I use vga out on my 32" Sony and get a brilliant picture. I use GOM player for most files (and WinAV with XviD codec to convert). You may have to convert your files to pure Xvid yourself because many people use rubbish codecs.

You have to communicate with the company in Manchester, which reconditions the laptops. They have nothing to with Argos in your High Street. If you have paid with Paypal (always do) you can claim your money back from them if you can't sort out your differences with the Manchester people.

hi, can anyone tell me if the screen is crystal or mat?

It;s a matt, non-glossy screen which gives fantastic contrast. I can use this in my conservatory (on the higher brightness settings) where my glossy laptop just doesn't work.
#34
I paid £290 for mine last year when first released  netbook itself pretty good if you buy new you get a 2 year warranty it has matt screen and full size keyboard keys which is good id recommend upgrading to a 6 or 9 cell battery and doing a simple ram upgrade which is as simple as removing 9 screws n cliping off the base

Will try, thanks.

Edit: It's not free. If you want to download more than 2 drivers you have to pay.

Just ordered a pink one for my wife, does anyone know how much I might get back from Quidco? As it's a portion of eBay's fees I'm guessing it won't be much!

Bought one of these from Argos a couple of months ago. Its a great purchase, about as good as you'll find for a Windows 7 Netbook with a N450 processor. The machine has a great screen, bright and great colour with the matt black non reflect really helping. The only minus was the 3 cell battery which you get about 2 hours from (which is generally OK for most of my use). Bought a 9 cell battery off ebay which gives about 8 hours for £30, the triangular shape of that battery actually helps the machine sit up for typing too. The Argos delivery was very quick and I really couldn't see anything wrong with the Netbook. I suspect that as some of the functions like switching on WIFI are on the keys (its good quaility keyboard by the way) people couldn't get to grips with it so this is why Argos get the returns. Hope this helps anyone considering buying. IMHO for this sort of money you can't really go wrong, if you want better then your going to pay £250 and up once you add delivery charges.:-D

It wouldn't be for me. I've got the U130 and wished I had the U100 :)
