I bought an MSI Wind U130 Netbook last September.
Shortly afterwards I installed a RAM upgrade chip to improve the speed of the machine.
I checked with the manufacturer (MSI) about the upgrade as you have to break the warranty seal to get into the machine. They said that it was fine to upgrade the RAM as long as no other damage was done and it would not invalidate the Warranty.
Everything was fine with it and I was very pleased with the netbook.
Last week a fault occurred with the display.
With Argos clearance laptop returns are with d&j Henry. When I phoned them to arrange a repair I asked them if I should remove the extra Ram chip before I sent it back, and they said as I had broken the warranty label the warranty was now invalid! They would not budge even though I told the them manufacturer had OK'd the upgrade.
I phoned argos clearance about it and they said the warranty was voided also.
So buyer beware don't open the back to upgrade or the warranty is voided.

Bought a Samsung one on tuesday for a neighbour and arrived yesterday all scratched and used.I know these are refurbs but you still expect the casing to be in almost new condition as I had previously bought the same one for myself and in A1 condition - seems like it can be a bit of a lottery.Sending it back to D&J Henry.

I'm a big fan of this little notebook, however I bought a black U130 for a work colleague last week from these guys and it arrived with a stuck / lit pixel on the screen. My colleague is happy to keep the machine (his eyesight isn't great tbh) but if it was mine it would be going straight back. Makes me wonder how well these refurbished machines are checked?
Also, I wonder how the returns department view dead / stuck pixels, as in the past there's been a minimum amount required before a manufacturer will do anything about it. Perhaps this has changed though (I'm going back to the US launch of the Sony PSP).

Bought one before and the keyboard wasn't correctly fitted, half of it came loose from the netbook.
Phoned up and complained, they picked it up the next day and returned it a few days after. Perfect condition.

Argos ebay outlet, worst company you will ever deal with online, certainly was for me.

I got one of these from them last year to Hackintosh, sent the wrong colour first (pink instead of black) it was filthy broken and incomplete, replacement was the right colour but as the first one received, hinge was broken, stank of cigs, filthy, psu was from a Toshiba laptop, rubber feet missing from the bottom. Case cracked screw missing.

The tatty filthy box it came in was clearly marked as a faulty customer return. It hadnt been tested, cleaned checked in anyway obviously. Took 3 weeks to get the wrong colour one they sent swapped. 4 weeks on after returning the second one I still hadnt got a refund I had to use a paypal claim in the end to get my money back, ebay sorted in the end not Henry or Argos !

On the thread I got mine on over 60% of people had a similar experience. Dont believe me ? Check their feedback, its totally shocking for such a big company and most of their bad feedback is for computers and electrical items.

People wont listen and buy anyway because its cheap. Fair enough buyer beware and good luck to you. If you have a problem (very likely) you are going to need it. Just keep in mind that if you need to use the warranty or get a refund, allow 6 to 8 weeks to get your money back or for ebay / paypal to sort out plus numerous phone calls and emails.

Ah sarcasm , someone who speaks my language. I mean will this or any netbook be suitable for my uni work?

It might depend entirely on what uni course you are studying, But unless you specifically want a small machine for some reason, or you are particularly strapped for cash, buy a machine with a decent processor and a bigger screen.

(Coming from a recent graduate who just bought one of these as a 2nd machine but would have gone mad using it on a regular basis for extended periods of time i.e. whilst writing-up projects)

James I'm glad yours is OK.I do hope it remains so as upgrading it in any way has invalidated your warranty !

Thanks :) for the price I paid for it, Im not really fussed, I'll just buy another one, but thinking about it:

- If the screen goes, I'll just hook the netbook up to my TV and use that as the display
- If the ram goes faulty, its very very cheap to buy some more
- Likewise if the hard drive goes faulty!

The only thing that would render it useless, is the motherboard going faulty, and theres as much chance of that happening, as there is in any other laptop / netbook / computer!

Because you formatted the hdd, you need to reinstall the Wireless card drive, you do this by simply switching on the Wifi, by pressing the Fn button and F11 Key this will enable the Wifi and install the driver then you can put in your router key and then its good to go.
Hope that helps.
