Decent price for this exact drive, if, like me you prefer to buy WD El. drives as they share the same power cords. Am hoping this drive will come down over the next few months as the 3.0 ones take over. Hot for now tho.
ok i ll pass

I have around 1.7tb of grateful dead live shows and around .8tb Jerry Garcia band live shows. This drive will be ideal for me as it allows one drive for GD shows and the second for Jerry Garcia shows. At some point I may need more, but this will keep me good for another year or two.

I come to look at this drive because it is a good deal. Guess who else come too? The whingers.

At a rough guess, I would think that at least 75% of users still have only USB 2, and we talking storage space here. To fill it is going to take hours, so unless you are sad enough to sit there and watch it happening why worry?? Traditionally I have always backed up overnight, a habit dating back to tape drives etc.

If you want it faster connect it direct to a sata port.

Plus if you don't want USB 2, you needn't go beyond the title, it clearly says USB 2.

oO What!! Yes I agree 100%! I think. When you look back over the past 15 years or so and look at the figures thrown around regarding USB01, USB1.1, USB02, Firewire and its derivatives and now SSD and USB3, it makes you think.

Dunno what happened to eSata, the speed difference between USB3 and eSata is minimal with no change needed in protocols as with USB.

I'm still on a 6 year old 80gb harddrive.. Never understand why you would need all of that space..

Usually people buy a larger hard drive because of the data they have takes up more than 80gb, yours its probably fine for you but for people who download 80gb is peanuts.

Whining about USB3 when it's like 2 seconds faster lmao.

actually usb 3.0 is advertised at being 10 TIMES FASTER.

Unfortunately I'm gonna have to vote this deal cold.....

Western Digital my Book Essential 3.0 3 TB External Hard Drive is only £105.95 from amazon

Having owned many USB 3.0 external storage devices. it is worth paying that extra little bit on top.

USB 2.0 maxs out at 35MB/s where as USB 3.0 can do at least 70-100MB/s or even higher depending on the drives used so long as the external is 3.0 compatible.

pardon the pun but i wouldnt WASTE MY TIME with USB2 when USB3 can do it so much faster for just a few quid more.

USB 3.0 is also backwards compatible with USB 2.0 so theres no need to worry about using a USB 3.0 device with a USB 2.0 one.

Agreed, the Mybook USB 3 is well worth the little extra, I got one and I've been getting 80-100mb/s writes, I'd only get the elements if your going to take the drive out and use it in a pc.

it is now back up to 99.99

for those that mock this deal as only being USB2.0...

I am happy to use only USB2.0 as it will be hooked up to my media player and I will transfer my collection of bought DVDs to it once, after that the files are read-only, so no point paying extra for functionality I will hardly ever use...I will leave the copy from my PC to the HDD overnight, so I won't even notice it taking hours

the other thing I am wary of is how stable/reliable are the new USB3.0 interfaces, I don't want to be the first to find out my 3TB of data is inaccessible...I remember the crap seagate external drives and their click-of-death...the drives inside were fine, the USB interface was the problem

USB 3.0 is nothing new so I wouldn't worry about the 'click of death' or similar; however there may be a worry about old hardware not properly implementing the USB standards and somehow not working with the USB3.0 device. Perhaps more likely is an incompatibility due to the size of the drive.

Heat from me :)
Most people will just rip the drives out of the enclosure. Who actually uses external drives like this these days anyway ?
If you are pluging into tv etc you get usb powered.

Powered externals are pointless and just cheap drives for people to rip out.

Good deal for 2tb usb 2. I really think its worth paying a little extra for usb 3 as that extra speed makes a lot of difference for a drive of this size.
oh dear ebuyer is the lowest (_;)

I know this is only USB 2.0 but for backing up files it's plenty I think plus huge storage for the price.

Talking from experience, backing up on a huge drive is not a good idea. If it fails, everything is gone (unless you backup the backup drive as well, preferably on several smaller drives).
usb 3 version cheaper at currys/pc world with code 3TB20 :D
