I'd normally buy the Tesco brand light olive oil for cooking but spotted that the really nice Napolina version is currently half price! This even makes buying two 500ml bottles of the Napolina oil cheaper than the single 1L bottle of Tesco oil. Available in-store and checked via Mysupermarket.com that Tesco.com are doing it too.

Lidl have 750ml of their award winning Olive Oil for £1.99 this week

If you shop at Ocado they have 1 litre bottles of Essential Waitrose Mild & Light Olive Oil for £2.53, so that works out really cheap.

Typically of this franchise, the same bottles are much more expensive in Waitrose store.

Yes, that's excellent for salad dressing, etc. but if you want to fry with olive oil, you really *cannot* use EVOO, as it will burn at higher temperatures. I buy light and mild olive oil for cooking and extra virgin from either Aldi or Lidl for using in salad dressings and the final touch for homemade pasta sauce :-)

Extra virgin olive oil is absolutely fine for shallow frying.

I wouldn't say the Napolina one is any better than Tesco's own to be honest. Neither of them are made using Italian olives (despite what the Italy flag on the front of the Napolina bottle suggests). I would say this oil is great for cooking with but I would not use it for salad dressings. It's worth paying a bit more for a really nice oil for salad dressings, drizzling onto foods as it will actually have a nice flavour to it whereas these cheaper oils do not.

This is a good olive oil!

re: extra virgin olive oil fine for shallow frying: not in my experience. I am not a fan of the burning scent that it often emits and would prefer a lighter olive oil for cooking.

And, yes, as I said, I do believe that it is worth spending more in order to have a good EVOO for "straight eating", as it were. Don't think that anyone is suggesting using "light and mild" olive oil for this purpose!

And if Napolina is no better than Tesco for cooking, is it not then worth buying the Napolina, as it's cheaper than the Tesco oil? ;-)

Thanks for the Sainsbury's link, but at the rate my household goes through extra virgin olive oil (make all our own salad dressing and pasta sauce), 12 quid a litre is waaaay too pricey!

I use EVOO for salads and frying onions etc it is the basis of almost all my meals. I am always wary of these light olive oils as often the olives complete with stones are ground down and heated in order to extract every last bit of oil this degrades the natural benefits of olive oil you might aswell use a hydrogenated oil.
EVOO is cold pressed it means that only mechanical pressure is used to extract the oil retaining all its goodness

Tesco's also had the extra virgin one on of as well last week picked up one of each as it's decent quality bit better than the tesco's own brand in my opinion.

From tomorrow the Co-op will have 1 litre bottles of Napolina Olive Oil (standard, not Extra Virgin or Mild and Light) on offer. Last time they had these bottles on offer they were £3.00 and I imagine they will be this price again. ** Edit: Just to confirm that the 1 litre bottles of Napolina Olive Oil are now £3.00 in Co-op / Somerfield.

Cool! I still have some from when the Napolina EVOO was 2.50/litre in ASDA, a great deal!
