Does anyone know if you can buy a case for this?

Tons of generic 7" cases on Amazon.

Just don't expect too much from it. I had one of these Chinese import tablets and it was higher spec than this one. Lasted about a month before I sold it. Too glitchy/laggy/slow for my liking.

My one benchmarked around 30% lower scores than a 2 year old Samsung Galaxy S phone. Web browsing was where I found it most annoying when lag kicked in. Not all games worked on it and it NEEDED custom firmware to get the best out of it.

Dual core ones and newer processors are appearing on some of the newer Chinese imports now so these older single core models are only going to drop in price.

A higher spec than this should benchmark faster than a Samsung Galaxy S - … A higher spec than this should benchmark faster than a Samsung Galaxy S - what one did you buy?

    Eken A90.

Same processor/gfx as this but with 1gb of RAM.

Using Quadrant the Galaxy S benchmarked about 2200. The A90, with a well configured installation of CM9 ROM managed just over 1600. Stock it managed about 1500. My current Galaxy Note running stock ICS clocks in around 3700. My mates HTC One X is up around 4700. These cheapo tablets are not in the same league compared to newer (and a lot of older) smartphones I'm afraid.

Believe me, I tried every tweak available for the thing but it was just too underpowered for my taste.

If you buy this, the first thing I'd install would be Dolphin HD browser. The stock browser had a nasty habit of clogging up and force closing all the time.

    ** EDIT **

Sorry. Just noticed this one uses an A13 chipset rather than the A10 that was in the tablet I had. Although, having looked it up, the A13 appears to be a scaled DOWN version of the A10 chipset (no hi-res or HDMI support so it's cheaper). Besides the removed functionality, it's much the same.

But with half the RAM, I would only expect the lag to be worse ....

What does a custom rom achieve on a tablet like this and how easy is it … What does a custom rom achieve on a tablet like this and how easy is it to do?

Squeezes every last bit of performance out of it and is often more stable than the stock ROM's these things ship with.

The stock ROM on the A90 was average at best. CM9 was a good improvement usability wise but only managed to squeeze about 10% extra performace out of it.

They're usually fairly straightforward to install. The most awkward bit is often finding one which is 100% compatible with your device as there are LOADS of Chinese imports out there now. Many of which are clones of each other ..... except often with minor hardware differences.

The A90 for instance. The batches had different hardware in them for the touch screen and accelerometers but they were all sold as the same unit. This meant that even the Eken supplied firmwares only worked on 50% of the units sold! (If you tried to re-install, they all work out of the factory)

Thats the thing with the Chinese ones. Yes, you get more bang for your buck and the specs on paper look a lot better than the branded stuff you buy in the high street. But, you usually have to faff about with them a bit more to get the best out of them.

Purely my opinion of course ..... but I wouldn't bother. If you have a Note, this will feel like a snail in comparison ..... and the lag (which will be VERY noticeable if you are used to a Note) will drive you nuts.

I had an A90 (similar sort of tablet to this, but slightly higher spec) and a Galaxy S (which was due for renewal in a few months). In the end I sold them both and put the money towards a Note. Will switch to a rolling monthly contract when my current one ends.

The Note wee's on both devices from a great height.

That is indeed the Elf II. And thats a good price for it as well. (Although it looks like it ships from China?)

It should stream stuff fine. I had iPlayer working fine on the A90 and the Elf II is higher powered than that. But remember, Chinese import (no matter how good) will likely require some tweaking to get the absolute best out of it ..... no matter how good the spec looks. It does have HDMI out though (micro-HDMI) unlike the one in this deal. The HDMI out on my A90 worked perfectly so I wouldn't expect any problems with it on this.

There are custom ROM's available for it already. Have a look on slatedroid .....

I have a Eken T01 and the spec is almost identical to this and i can tell you now the 512mb of ram is a deal breaker, the thing crawls along when i check my system with a app it shows 98% memory used leaving nothing to perform any tasks. The tablet is very unresponsive with bad lag i have a fair few apps on there but even after clearing all running apps so it starts up the apps itself its still at 96% memory used. Its good points are that a cheap HDMI lead connected to your TV makes a decent enough media player and the device easily outputs full HD and plays without stutter but if your buying it for everyday surfing and gaming don't bother the only reason i have it as it was bought for the daughter as a birthday present and she sold it back to me as it was unusable and she now uses her blackberry PB.

Eken are rubbish I have to say - I had the same two spec tabs - one from Eken and one from Wendy Lou but the Eken couldn't do half of what the NATPC one could - despite having identical spec, the NATPC seemed twice as fast.

Spoke to a member on Slatedroid who said that Eken just make theirs really cheaply now and have lost their way in China - they are a joke whereas at one time, they were the leaders in the field of cheap chinese tablets.

The point was, you can't compare the two. This one will do nicely for people on a budget who aren't expecting Ipad results for £50.
If someone posts a deal for an item at a certain price, there is no point jumping in and saying "but item B at 3 times the price is much better" because I'm sure everyone knows that, yes, it is likely.

Big difference between £50 and £168!

Surely it depends on budget and what its going to be used for and by whom.

I've ordered one as a Plex player and remote for my HTPC. At 50 quid I won't be too worried
about leaving it sitting about for my two girls to play a couple of games on now and again and put music on with it or look at some photos etc.

This fits the bill perfectly and it's from well regarded UK seller.

BTW the 16 gig is Nexus is £200 - 8 gigs isn't much once you've got some music and couple of movies on it so most will go for the 16 which is 4 times the price. At least this thing has a sd slot.

  18. Feverdawg's avatar

right ....got a bit of time while its cooking anyhows so lets get cracking. Hopefully I won't miss anything out.

Firstly.......fully the reason I think the problem happened....

    ....

    Chainfire was not to blame.

As you know, I mentioned earlier, that it didn't seem fully rooted. Lucky Patcher was giving errors about no root access, though Titanium Backup said it was rooted. SuperOneClick v2.3.3 also said it was already rooted (at this point I did not attempt to reroot or anything like that). Now I can't remember the exact order of my steps, but basically I installed some other root-required app which also gave a message saying no root access. I also downloaded Chainfire free version from the Play Store, though did not do anything with it. Anyways, I believe it was Lucky Patcher, but one of the root problem apps, that suggested going into the settings of one of the apps and downloading/updating SuperSu and also Busybox (from the Play Store). I did this, but still had same problem. I was still installing a few games with no problems, then went to Chainfire and selected to install the drivers. This install process requires a reboot. On reboot thats when I was back to factory, and then noticed my Internal Storage at 0.00b!!!! The main storage was intact, just the primary Internal Storage device.

    The cause
    ----

I don't know for certain, but I think perhaps the partial root access may have helped it happen.

After all the trying of getting to flash a new image for hours on end, on different pcs, come 4am I was finally ready to throw in the towel....I'd seen a few mentions of similar problems on A10 devices, but never a real fix, just a few that finally managed to get the flashing app to work, or a system update from the main menu (not available on this tablet). I then came across after my millionth webpage, about someones problem with them getting factory reset after installing Busybox (after reboot).

The cause of this is not a factory reset - your data is still there!!the … The cause of this is not a factory reset - your data is still there!!the installation of busybox in ICS causes a couple of MOUNT failures, so you cannot see your data. That's why you get 0 bytes and cannot download anything.

So.....installing Busybox, for whatever reason on the tablet screwed it up (according to Titanium Backup there is a version of busybox actually installed already - but updating it seems a big nono). Apparently it installs it to the wrong location in the system space ( /system/xbin/busybox instead of /system/bin/busybox )....then on reboot, that partition will not mount any more. So it needs moving back, once you get access to it again.

The Fix part 1 - only partial root access
    ------
Most peoples suggestions were to install X or Y, problem being I couldn't install anything it seemed, because of 0 storage space.

As a seperate fix, I read that I should launch Superuser, and attempt to Update it within its settings. It found an update, but applying it was giving an error message about mounting.

I'm not sure WHICH actual step finally fixed this, as ran it through several steps...however I believe it was this.......SuperOneClick v2.3.3 said the device was already rooted. I attempted 'root anyway' several times, using both Auto, and the 2 root methods. Also Re-Rooting and unrooting again. Every time, Superuser gave the same error message.

I then installed UnlockRoot from unlockroot.com. I ran this, and left it for a good 5 minutes or so. Once it started, the app itself didnt seem to be doing anything, just locked up. I disconnected the tablet, and ran the Superuser update again anyway....it worked!!!!!! Superuser updated itself to the latest version.

On reboot though, still at factory, and still with Internal Storage 0 problem....but from then on I had full root access finally.

So to summarise, I think if you just want to fully root your device, try UnlockRoot. It appears to do nothing, but seemed to do the job for me.

Fix 2 - The Internal Storage problem
    ----------------------------------------------------
Right, to cut long story a bit shorter.....I read about using terminal emulator, but then about an easier way, using ES File Explorer. I nearly ignored this, as it refuses to let you install apps as you know....however gave it a go, downloading the apk file for both of them. They actually installed!!! Other apps still wouldn't install of course, but I guess the path where these 2 apps install 2 is a different location. Terminal emulator was useless as still couldn't access the mount (maybe some extra commands might have helped).

Here are the steps in ES File Explorer taken from the site

    1. Your tablet is still rooted, but su won't work because of the symlink/mount problem. Also ALL your data is all still there even AFTER a factory restore. Flash doesn't affect that area of storage.
    2. The DMP7005 rom is pre rooted. It installs that way. (that bits not relevant to our device)
    3. You don't even need to install the term program; you can use the built-in file manager. (not built in in our case - so download it manually and install - the basic File Manager doesnt have the ability
    4. Go into the settings for ES File Explorer and make sure to check the two options:
    a. Root Explorer
    b. Mount file system (as writable)
    c. Also enable the option "UP to Root" and/or set the home directory to "/"
    5. Now Just copy busybox from /system/xbin to /system/bin
    a. Navagate to /system/xbin
    b. Long Press on busybox and select "copy" (a paste button will then appear on the lower center of the screen_
    c. Navagate to /system/bin
    d. Click on the paste button and paste.
    6. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT: ES File Explorer won't copy the files permissions by default so you MUST also do the following:
    a. Navigate to /system/bin (you should still be there after your paste)
    b. Long Press on busybox and select "Properties"
    c. Click Change and change permissions to rwx-rwx-r-x by doing the following:
    1. Check all the boxes except for the bottom middle one. (if you check them all it won't hurt anything but you shouldn't)
    2. Click "OK" and then click "OK" to save the changes.
    7. Reboot the tablet by using the long press on the power button to shut down, and the long press to start up again.

    ALL DONE!!!!!

Now on reboot, all my previously installed apps and games were there, EXCEPT for those which I'd installed after installing Busybox. Not a big problem in comparison however, a few mins to reinstall them.

Tested Lucky Patcher and the likes, and have full root access now. Whether having only partial root caused the problem I don't know, but not keen to find out again lol...I shan't be updating Busybox anytime soon.

One thing I'm NOT looking forward to, and think we will all have chew on with, is when we do in the future need to update the device. LiveSuit app is terrible, and seems very pot luck to if your computers will be able to work with it/get device into flash mode. It looks like its the only image flashing app though for the moment. I hope that by the time we need to update, theres an alternative flashing app out.

Hope the above can help anyone else out that gets the same/similar problems. Worth trying part1 too to give you full root access, as the rom that came on only gives you partial

I have a budget tablet (not this one). They're not as stable or reliable as a top end tablet, of course, but perfectly good for games, youtube, surfing, emails, etc. - and at around fifty quid it's not the end of the world if you don't use it as much as you thought you would. (I use mine a LOT more than I thought I would!)

Yes .... it will come with a version of the store installed.

But .... it may not give you access to everything you expect. You may well have to mess around with it to get full Play store support running. It depends on the ROM installed on it and how it's been configured. Impossible to say exactly what you will and won't be able to see out of the box without trying it out on the tablet in question ....

Plus UK configuration (plug and language setup) adds another few dollars.

Free shipping (China Post) takes about a month. Add (minimum) $10 more for speedier shipping.

Takes it to £131 .... and thats using XE.com. The conversion rate from bank/credit card/paypal won't be as good as that.

You then risk import taxes and duties.

And finally, there are probably other Chinese importers selling it cheaper than that. (try sites like alibaba and aliexpress)

It's pretty much an Eken A90 (a lot of the 9.7" Chinese tablets are based on very similar hardware .... this is one of them). For all the extra hassle that comes with buying an import, you'd be as well just buying the A90 from Futeko (£140 odd) and doing away with all the hassle of buying from China not to mention the peace of mind of having a UK return to base warranty. (and Futeko are also very good on the customer service front)

I bought a very similar tablet just recently, having seen it getting some heat on this very site: hotukdeals.com/dea…351

I did not think it would make a difference, but the screen ruins it for me. My phone is a Galaxy S, which was getting a bit tired, but now seems shiny and new in comparison. As for the rest of it, it's not that fast (but faster since the stock rom was replaced), and the screen is not as reactive. So, fast games (such as zombie smash) are unplayable, but works well with other games which do not require such manic screen tapping, such as tower defence games.

For me, this works as a browser, kindle user, occasional games and email. I'm sure it would be okay for the iPlayer, but I'd rather wait and watch it on the telly or laptop. Nice thing is that the kids can play with it, or I can use it in the bath and not worry about it getting damaged, due to the low price.

For non-android users, this could be a good purchase, but for those with decent phones, I don't think it's worth it, even at the price.

Good find and heat added, but I would suggest waiting for the Kindle Fire to be released in the UK. If it ever does of course...

I bought my Chinese tablet a couple of months ago, not years.

And the internals were pretty much identical (aka same core chipset and gfx processor) but with more memory and a better screen. Many of the Chinese imports areound this price point use virtually identical core internals. Hence why slatedroid has a forum dedicated to A10 based tablets. There are loads of them! So the comparison is wholly relevant. The Note was used more to illustrate that if thats what you're used to, you won't be terribly impressed with this.

Just setting expectations. You pays your money, you takes your choice.
