Thanks for the credit Crossbow. Was going to post it myself but thought not many people would be interested as its IDE and not SATA, but I may well be proved wrong once again!

Great price, especially as I need a drive that burns dual layer! Quite handy. Just checked reviews, only bad point seems to be it doesnt do bitsetting/booktype on normal dvds. Not that big a deal as apparently its only the old PS2s and rare DVD players that require them to play your back up DVDs on them. http://www.cdfreaks.com/reviews/Optiarc-AD-7173A-DVD-Writer-Preview/conclusion.html.
Maybe it is a trick to get you to buy the more pricey dual layer discs ;) Who knows, maybe I'm all wrong!!

ordered!

anyone know where i can get some cheap labelflash cds or dvds from?
#23
also regarding cd/dvd writers, sata is near enough the same as ide in speed and burn quality,

the only plus side to sata is that it is newer, better air flow and some newer motherboards don't have IDE. i would save the sata connections for hard drives as there are minor improvements

pata is a completly different and i think its better than IDE and sata, but i'm not 100% on that

IDE & PATA are one & the same, the latter being the newer terminology when SATA was introduced.

is there anyway to make this external? (usb)

If you don't have IDE and you don't mind waiting a bit, buy one of these for less than £3 to convert the drive - it even comes with a SATA lead. Note that your power supply will need an IDE (Molex) connector for the drive, and another (adaptor supplied), or a floppy disk connector, for the board.

Wonder what cables do I need to connect it to my Digihome digital video recorder to burn the recording onto a disc?
#28
Probably impossible. I presume you are talking about a hard disk recorder, so while it is likely to have an IDE interface that will take this drive as well as the hard disk, the recorder will need an awful lot of extra software to be able to do anything with it. This is nothing like a stand-alone DVD recorder.

Nice find!
Just ordered one!
Heat added!!

Does anyone know the best place to get some cheap black spray paint??!?
:-D

Unfortunately, I don't think it'll be possible. Some recorders have a USB connection, which one can use this to transfer to a PC's hard drive & burn to disc.

Your best bet may be to remove the Digihome's hard drive (if possible) & connect it to your PC the usual way, then convert the format & finally burn to disk. Probably quite a big hassle to do a single time - let alone each time you need to burn files to disc!

This will work according to one of the reviewers comments:

Involvement: General (knows how to use it) - Ownership: 1 day to 1 week

Pros: Well ,this is a compacts and complete device that is very helpful to connect the devices to an usb port. Is very very useful if you have a laptop and you want to use, for example, a DVD writer and do not want to spend a lot of money in a external one.
Comes with power splly with connectors for serial ata also

sourcelives, or if interested in a secondhand external one, you can buy it from Cluffy321 for £11 delivered(?) posted in this thread - that's if ryouga doesn't want it (mafia will probably back out as he's purchased one of these already).

Good find ap123ap:)

Does anywhere sell black bezels (is that what they are called)? Rather than spraypainting it black!
#34
Aware this brand, I had one 10 months ago, can't read most of my driver CDs.

Don't rush to blame your writer - buy better media.

If it couldn't read CDs, must've been a duff one surely. Did you return it for a replacement under the warranty?
#38
I bought an Optiarc AD-7200S a couple of months ago. It's noisy, and burning app's take a lot longer to start than with my old Lite-on drive.

Don't know if this one will be any better, but as it's an older model than mine I wouldn't bet on it...

But, for a tenner even with the little problems it would still be worth it I suppose.

HA HA! Obviously you got a bad one and have been unlucky. I am a system builder of many years and in the the last three, I have only fit one brand - NEC after trying ALL the others in the same price bracket. They are THAT GOOD, that Sony merged with them for this division of product as Sony's were absolutely awful (noisy, slow and very very fussy with media).

Take my word for it from someone who builds day in and day out, these are an absolute bargain especially including delivery. (To put things in perspective, PC world and even Argos sell Poundland USB leads for well over a tenner!). Oh, by the way, 99% of motherboards still have one IDE (PATA) socket on them which perfectly accommodates this model. As for the beige colour, I use Colors IT cases for budget systems and these have a black flip down five and a quarter inch front panel so it doesn't matter which colour of drive you use. Lastly, I have had NO faulty returns, and in one case after a CD exploded, the drive still worked!

Super deal even if to sell then on!
