Yes, I'm with you on that.

GAME has dropped their online prices to £24.99. GameStation's prices have not changed (yet).

Unfortunately, the "Special Edition" versions (available at GAME & GameStation) are still at £44.99 :(

The PSP version has dropped too:

Need for Speed: SHIFT [PSP] £14.99 at GamePlay.co.uk

£3.99 is too much for me. I was seriously unimpressed with the demo. Never have I played a driving game that handled so badly.

Not voting as it is just my opinion and I am sure many will disagree.

Have you tried "SuperCar Challenge" or "Ferrari Challenge: Trofeo Pirelli"?

Or for that matter, "Need for Speed: Undercover"? :)

...What racing titles do you rate highly in comparison?

Yes, yes, GT5, GRID, GTR Evolution (PC) and Race 07 (PC). Shift is a little arcady imo. havent went thro the game but i wouldnt of thought it was better than GRID. decided to hold out for the next one (or until its ~£15), its better than undercover tho imo, THAT was really bad..

No, no, and for that matter, no.

I like Forza 2, PGR4, Dirt and Grid. I agree with the arcady comment, although I do love Outrun 2 and Burnout Paradise (although does get boring after a while). I have lots of other driving games too.

The graphics in Shift are pretty stunning and I was really looking forward to playing the demo but soon got fed up.

Didn't think I would need to justify my opinion.

Wow! - not much love for this ....

Personally it is one the best games I have ever played! ... sure the graphics are jaw-dropping but it's the sound and the sheer sense of speed which make it for me. .. that cockpit view is amazing. I have had it for a month and am still playing it every night - STILL not mastered every corner!

Think they could lose the drift events - they are just rubbish but the racing is just brilliant.

There is a big update coming soon too :-) ... seems that SMS actually listen to the players!

Forza 3 just seems pedestrian compared ... It may look beautiful but when I'm racing I don't tend to look at the scenery.

The PS3 Downloadable Playable Demo kept me amused for far longer than I thought it would even though you can drive at other cars & they go right over the top of the 2006 Lotus Elise 111R like it has a ramp instead of a set of headlamps! Maybe that it what the "R" suffix stands for ;).

The 2006 Pagani Zonda F you can unlock was not as quite of a handful to drive as I had imagined either. The 2008 Dodge Viper SRT10 on the other hand... make sure you have the damage setting to 'low' or else you'll end up with a battered tin can by the time you've power-slid around a few corners.

The BMW M3 (E46) is as you'd expect. Neither very poor, nor very good. A bit of a lame duck in the otherwise great line-up.

The handling in the 2008 Nissan GT-R has also made me waiver at my next car being an Ariel Atom (3) as well.

I think "SHIFT" is the best "Need for Speed" franchise release for a very long time... well, until Criterion Games get their driving mitts on the next iteration of the series in 2010.

Mind you, that may not be saying much depending on your opinion of the earlier titles in the franchise.

Either way, I'll be picking up a few PS3 titles for myself & my kids so we can spend some quality track-time together this festive season.

FYI: Taken from another of my previous posts...

"Sony Press Release: GRAN TURISMO™ SERIES SHIPMENT EXCEEDS 50 MILLION UNITS WORLDWIDE"
---
...as of the end of April 2008, the global total of the "Gran Turismo(tm)" franchise titles 'shipped' has passed 50 million units across the PlayStation [One], PlayStation 2, and PLAYSTATION 3 platforms (or "computer entertainment systems" as SCEI like to call them)....

when this hits £17.99 on play or the like Ill probably get it again - we had it as part of our ps3 slim package but trading it in to cex was part of the conditions for being able to afford the console!

Did think it was very good, in fact its the only racing game my girlfriend has ever been better than me at! Graphically I was a little underwhelmed, but maybe thats just me. Personally I prefer GRID and have just repurchased it after selling my special edition play.com one as I missed it that much.

As for your comments on Ferrari Challenge - I sold that game after half an hour as handling was terrible!

Yup... I cannot help but feel that this may reach £17.99 either as a Zavvi "Monday Mega" bargain or a Play.com "Deal of the Day" between now & Christmas.

But should I take the chance? It's enough to drive you mad! ;)

As for other racing titles...

My favourite titles on the PS3 are "Burnout Paradise" (spectacular crashes & real attention to detail in ancillary scenery. The ability to drop-in to online games almost instantaneously is a particularly good feature that I hope is carried forward and used as a benchmark for future titles, not only by this developer but by their competitors too), and "Midnight Club: Los Angeles" (interesting diversion from the 'norm' with a semi-story mode & after the first few races where the console-controlled drivers let you win, it has a decent learning curve to make you get really annoyed you lost a race but motivated enough to keep trying).

I have the Collector's Edition of "Race Driver: GRID" that grabbed my attention based on the Playable Demo, but I have yet to find the time to devote to it. I really must open it!

There are other very enjoyable "racers" on the PS3 at present. However, I didn't really rate "SEGA Rally" as I thought the graphics were a bit of a let-down [more like a PS2 presentation, than what I would expect of a PS3 title]... and I have yet to try my previously purchased "Stuntman: Ignition". I was considering "Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli" but after just seeing a Beta version of "Supercar Challenge" [that features the downloadable content that was made but could not be released for "Ferrari Challenge" due to copyright issues!], I decided not to bother with either.

One driving title to stay clear of, mind you... "Full Auto 2: Battlelines".

I also have "Colin McRae: DiRT" [Steelbook] [PS3] (still unopened) & "Pure" [PS3] (played for about two hours at the very most). I never got into "Gran Turismo 5: Prologue" & should really offer this for sale as I will never play it.

I am looking forward to "Split Second", "ModNation Racers", & possibly "Blur" though.

Santa is bringing "Madagascar Kartz" to one of my kids... not in the same league, but hopefully a lot of fun!

BFN,

fp.

PS. Can anybody recommend "Forza Motorsport 3"?

from the titles you've listed and not GT5 being great (but short) there it seems not a wise move to get ferrari challenge. It is challenging and you'll need alot of precision style driving. Kind of restricting in a sense of fun but very good race sim.

However defo crack open GRID, its lots of fun, challenging enough and very big game.

P.S. Although I've never played Forza 3, imo its very much in the style of GT5 mixed with a little bit of GRID.

I may be wrong, but I would expect the branch of PCWorld you visit to either telephone the nearest GAME Store, or to be aware of the in-store price already.

If you think you can get that price, then go for it. Good luck.

Have already done it :)

It is relying on a bit of luck but most of the time the cashier will simply look on the website to confirm price and check whether its in stock.

FYI: A "Team Racing" pack for Need for Speed SHIFT is to be made available on Xbox LIVE on 1 December 2009 & on the PlayStation Network on 3 December 2009 in Europe (a week later in North America).

The pack offers a new racing mode where two teams of up to six racers may "...battle against each other for online supremacy. Individual driving strategy and playing it safe won’t work as team tactics and 200 mph split-second decisions are required to push your team to the podium".

The new content also provides access to the following vehicles:

• 1967 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray 427
• 1967 Shelby GT-500
• 1969 Dodge Charger R/T
• 1971 Dodge Challenger R/T
• 1998 Toyota Supra Mark IV

The pack is referred to as "the first downloadable content" for Need for Speed SHIFT & is very reasonable priced at a total cost of FREE! :)

PS. Also taken from the same Electronic Arts press release: "Need for Speed SHIFT is now available on the PlayStation3, Xbox 360, PC, PSP® (PlayStation®Portable) system, mobile and coming soon on the iPhone™."
